Recommend me a 4x4

Redtartanshoes · 30/10/2018 18:20

Looking at getting a 4x4 soon. Currently have an A1 but have driven land rovers in past.

Needs to be comfortable, proper 4x4 but decent on motorway. Also need to think about tax as will be company car.

Anyone recommend anything before I have to deal with hell on earth car sales folk?

Thanks

I have a Freelander 2 and love it. I tow my horse with it but it is also very car like and comfy for normal use too (and not awful on fuel). Does it need to be a new car? You might find the limitations on what you can choose as a company car really narrow your options, maybe that is the place to start. Why do you need a 4x4? If it is for off road capability rather than towing then you could look at 4x4 cars rather than big 'proper' 4x4s. Skoda, Volvo and Subaru do ones as far as I know. Proper country folk have Subarus!

We've got an Evoque and it's an amazing car. It's fab off road (highly recommend a LR experience day), great on the motorway and not too bulky/cumbersome. We've got a limited edition, think it's a Landmark and it does pretty much everything we'd want it to.

We live on a steep hill in a small rural hamlet and I've never felt so safe winter driving.

toastfiend · 30/10/2018 19:06

Kia Sorento. Tows well, genuinely good off-road, was amazing in all the snow earlier in the year, drives well on the motorway, economical for a 4x4, 7 year warranty (and they cover pretty much everything with that, I even had a wheel bearing replaced under warranty recently). I really rate them and they don't have the 'designer' price tag of a lot of other 4x4s.

Needs to be new, not to tow but off road/construction sites etc.

Had beeen looking at Mitsubishi Outlander but a few folk have rubbished. Also looking at xtrail. Would love a disco but not sure I’m that well paid Wink

Love my X trail. It’s my second one and when the last one got to 130,000 miles I only considered another x trial.

Racecardriver · 30/10/2018 19:47

Rangerovers are by far the best car for British roads. Easy to drive, very comfortable and impossible to destroy. Wouldn’t bother you it’s BMW or Audi ones. They are just big cars really.

Thebluedog · 30/10/2018 19:50

I had a Mitsubishi shogun about 8 years ago and loved it. Far more agricultural than your range rovers but I’ve pulled a twin axle
Caravan out of a muddy, snow covered field with no problems. It was great on the motorway and very comfortable. Mine was a petrol with a gas conversion.

If I was in your position I’d be tempted to go for the new dual fuel outlander, cheaper to run and should be cheaper in tax due to it being dual fuel.

Thebluedog · 30/10/2018 19:52

A Range Rover is eye wateringly expensive on company car tax, my friend runs a million pound business and chopped his in for a Porsche 4wd as he couldn’t stomach the tax on the RR

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 30/10/2018 19:54

I've got an automatic Discovery Sport and it's a great car

Shmithecat · 30/10/2018 19:57

If you can stretch to a Discovery, do. I'd heartily recommend a Freelander2 but obvs they're not made anymore so can't buy new. A Shogun would also be a great choice. Toyota Landcruiser Amazon is another incredible 4x4 but again may be out of your budget if a Disco is. I've had all those mentioned. Currently have the Disco and the Landcruiser. Both brilliant on and off road.

Redtartanshoes · 30/10/2018 20:31

Dp has old and new disco and I love... probably out with my band though... and tax Shock

We were very lucky with our local LR dealers OP. We found a very good price online and they were prepared to match it to get the sale.

Always be prepared going into a dealers Grin

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 30/10/2018 20:41

DP had a Skoda Octavia 4X4 which was a great car to drive and was brilliant in the snow. The Skoda superb is another good 4X4.

ForalltheSaints · 30/10/2018 20:52

Which steep mountainous part of the Kings Road do you use, OP?

TweedAddict · 30/10/2018 20:54

BMW X3, I would have the X5 if I could be the X3 may fit your works budget, plus you can them on very good lease deals.

Eve · 30/10/2018 20:55

Ssangyong - quite a few friends who tow recommend these.

UrsulaPandress · 30/10/2018 20:56

Toyota Landcruiser.

Nothing to touch it.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 30/10/2018 21:41

I have a massive crush on the Outlander PHEV, and I believe it's got a very low BIK for company use.

Redtartanshoes · 31/10/2018 08:22

@Forallythesaints I live in a mountainous part of Scotland since you ask. And as mentioned down thread I work on construction sites, reservoirs and other remote places... “not being able to get my car up the hill” isn’t an acceptable excuse for not doing my job. RTFT

What about Tesla X? 4x4 and electric www.tesla.com/en_GB/modelx

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 31/10/2018 08:41

The basic Discovery Sport is basically the same as the old Freelander and they start at a much more reasonable price than the regular Discos. I'm a fellow hill-dwelling Scot and honestly this car has been incredible.

Quittingthyme · 31/10/2018 09:15

Second the Nissan XTrail. Great car, very limited issues. Took my last one to 140k miles

SistersOfHearsey · 31/10/2018 10:34

I say this on all 4x4 threads Do not buy a Jeep Renegade

Awful car. Entertainment/Nav system is from the bloody stone age and no word of a lie you can be halfway to your destination before it actually wakes up. It fails to connect to 'U Connect' so heads you straight into the traffic and it can only be used at standstill, so your passenger can't input anything whilst your moving.

Add to this rattles, creaks and generally poor build quality and you'll understand why I waved it off with a smile on my face when the 2 year lease ended.

Monday55 · 31/10/2018 10:42

Toyota RAv4

I miss driving it and they last forever.
