Recommend me a 4x4

Redtartanshoes · 30/10/2018 18:20

Looking at getting a 4x4 soon. Currently have an A1 but have driven land rovers in past.

Needs to be comfortable, proper 4x4 but decent on motorway. Also need to think about tax as will be company car.

Anyone recommend anything before I have to deal with hell on earth car sales folk?

Thanks

Ssangyong rexton, recently voted 4x4 of the year. I have an old one which I love and REALLY REALLY want to upgrade to newer!!

EmmaStone · 31/10/2018 12:03

I really like my Volvo XC60.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 31/10/2018 12:34

I have a BMW X5 and love, love, love it. It tows everything, is gorgeous in shitty conditions and is an all round great car.

LBOCS2 · 31/10/2018 19:48

I had an Outlander PHEV as my company car @DisgraceToTheYChromosome - and you're absolutely right, the BIK liability is tiny (and if you DO drive in London it's congestion charge exempt - I work on building sites, both in and out of London. Being able to get around unmade roads without worrying about the underside of my car is a significant advantage in my view).

Bodear · 31/10/2018 19:51

Volvo XC90 (or the 60). Lovely to drive and got some serious oomph.

Villanelle123 · 31/10/2018 19:55

Discovery sport much cheaper than the discovery and much nicer IMO (what is with that off centre number plate? )

AgnesNaismith · 31/10/2018 19:59

A BMW X5 is the best car I’ve ever had.

Too many Land Rovers around here, extortionately priced and go out of date quickly....unless you can get a Vogue Star

VW Tiguan 4Motion
Drives like a golf
Really comfortable
Safe
Big load space
Loads of power
I am tiny under 5ft and never thought I would have a big 4x4 but it's fab.

I'm in a very snowy part of the US and I adore my Subaru Outback. It's the size of an estate, has a huge boot, but it's got higher clearance and 4WD. It's really solid and it has plenty of power. Lots of people here have them.

VetOnCall · 31/10/2018 21:16

I had a Toyota LandCruiser and loved it, they're pretty much indestructible. Mine was shipped to Kenya when I sold it. I have a Subaru AWD estate now which is much smaller but still spacious and a really awesome car. I've sadly had to leave it in the UK since moving to Canada and I miss it! There are Subarus EVERYWHERE here though, they're way more popular here than in the UK and considering the conditions here in the winter that says a lot about how capable and reliable they are. DP has a massive Toyota pickup but when we buy a second car for me in the next couple of months it'll likely be a Subaru.

Agree with all of the above except the last bit as a) I’m well over 5ft and b) it’s actually quite small for a 4x4 but that’s a plus as I have to parallel park it on a narrow street!

Japanesejazz · 31/10/2018 21:25

Anything other than a Subaru is second rate. I’ve never been stuck in mine and I do a lot of off road, sometimes towing a horse box.

Japanesejazz · 31/10/2018 22:02

Although obviously you have to be quite well off to afford to run one. Otherwise you buy a Range Rover 😂
X trails and the L200 are the only things I’ve driven that come anywhere close to my forester
I wouldn’t have an evoque if someone was giving it away

UrsulaPandress · 31/10/2018 22:40

My Toyota is certainly not second rate. It is the vehicle of choice of every ne'er do well on the African continent.

Japanesejazz · 31/10/2018 22:46

The l200 is a superb vehicle
The Auris is not

AngelasMerkin · 31/10/2018 22:47

I wanted to contribute but this thread is swamped with wealthy women.

toweldramas · 31/10/2018 22:54

xc90 or xc60 if you don’t need so much space. Super safe & comfortable. Had an x5 before but prefer the xc90.

Japanesejazz · 31/10/2018 22:56

You can have a Subaru and a horse or money
I’ll stick with the former as both bring me much pleasure and there are no pockets in a shroud

Bodear · 01/11/2018 06:06

@AngelasMerkin I don’t understand, if you have something to contribute then that’s great and you’ve driven a 4x4 that you have an opinion on. If you don’t have something to contribute then is your comment just a goady swipe? I’m not trying to be provocative but I don’t get it.

Redtartanshoes · 01/11/2018 06:27

@angelasmerkin I’m certainly not “ wealthy” although I’m not poor either. Single mum, reasonable job just happens to be an outdoors one where I need a suitable vehicle. If I was officed based I’d still have my old golf that I loved.

Best off roader & all rounder was my Toyota Amazon 4.2
Worst all-rounder my Defender, but it looked fab.
My Hilux was quite nice.
The RR got written off before I formed an opinion really.
I would say Landcruiser with good off toad tyres.

Twirlbites1 · 01/11/2018 06:39

I’m in love with our Skoda Kodiaq, and I’m really not a car person. We were considering the 7 seats more than the 4x4 feature and whittled it down to a choice between the kodiaq and the disco sport......the disco sport hasn’t even space for a pint of milk in the back with the 7 seats up.....the kodiaq has space for weekend luggage. And it’s waaaaay cheaper.

SofiaAmes · 01/11/2018 06:46

Toyota 4Runner is a great compromise between the Landcruiser and the Rav4. (I have owned all 3 on 2 continents over the last 30 years.) I currently have the non-4WD version, 7 seater version of the 4Runner, but with the tow package. I got rear ended a few months ago: my bumper was a little cracked and the rear hatch a little dented. The car that hit me was totaled. The body shop said that I had so little damage because the tow package reinforces the rear of the car enormously. I have had the car for 12 years and am up to 130,000 miles and have had to do not much more than the standard 6 month tune ups. It's also really nice to drive and a comfortable size for a 5'4" woman.

MaisyMary77 · 01/11/2018 06:46

I’ve got the Volvo XC90 T8. It’s spacious-fits all six of us in easily and comfortably. It’s also a hybrid, so I do shorter drives in pure mode and it’s fairly economical on motorways etc. It’s my company car and there was tax relief with it but I think that’s now stopped with hybrids. We’re looking at the Audi Q8 next as it’s fully electric.

Shmithecat · 01/11/2018 06:49

Sometimesitsmyownfault we have the Amazon 4.2 V6 petrol (we're in the ME) and I absolutely love it. I only prefer my Disco (3) as the boot is slightly bigger and the seats fold into the floor so don't take up any space when not in use. We're seriously considering importing it when we repat, as the price of second hand Landcruisers in the UK is crazy! Understandable though, they are magnificent cars. And yes, the hilux (imo) is an amazing offroader, especially on sand dunes 😁
