Book recomendations for nearly 9 year old

Hi can anyone recommend some books for my nearly 9 year old please?? She has just finished the harry potter series which she loved but I think the last book was a bit complex for her. She is currently reading how to train your dragon series which again she is loving but she is flying through very quickly so maybe something a bit more complex. She enjoys the horrible history books and David Williams but she insists I read them to her at bed time! We have some Jacqueline Wilson books too which she enjoys. Any suggestions very appreciated. Hopefully nothing sweary if poss as harry potter had some bad language which I didn't realise!

Thank you

A series of unfortunate events. I started them around the same age. Really good book series and there's 13 of them, so should take her a while.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 29/10/2018 14:37

middle school (series)
diary of a wimpy kid (series)
dork diaries (series)
Fudge by Judy Blume (series)

FallenAngel89 · 29/10/2018 14:37

My daughter has just finished all the Tom Gates books. She now wants to start the Warrior Cats series :)

Witch Wars by Sibeal Pounder series

Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynn Jones

Second the Lemony Snicket series

Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell (new series from How to Train Your Dragon author)

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 29/10/2018 15:18

Would Michael morpurgo books be suitable for her age? Any particularly good ones? I think she will like the series of unfortunate events books and 13 should keep her busy for a while at least!

Wizards of once looks right up her street thanks.

Anne of Green Gables
Archie Greene trilogy (Potterish)
Witchworld series nosycrow.com/product/witchworld/
Goth Girl
The Hobbit
Narnia
The Tree that Sat Down

nowbebe · 29/10/2018 15:57

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is a good one and similar to Wizards of Once in feel (if she likes that one)

Leeds2 · 29/10/2018 17:27

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.
Roman Mysteries series by Caroline Lawrence.
If she likes Horrible Histories, there are also Horrible Geography (Anita Ganieri) and Horrible Science (Nicl Lawrence).

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 29/10/2018 20:16

Those roman mystery books look good. I hadn't thought of the horrible science/geography sets my dd2 would love them.
Thanks

Roman Mysteries are great - and I think there are 16 in the series!

There is also a Horrible Maths series by Kjarten Posket (?spelling), but I think they are rather dull. Maybe not if maths is your thing!

SunnySomer · 29/10/2018 20:38

Quick read but v funny The Bolds by Julian Clary

barneymcgroo · 29/10/2018 20:44

If she liked the how to train your dragons, I bought my goddaughter (avid 9 year old reader) the Night Spinner trilogy by Abi Elphinstone. And then her latest one called Sky Song. Cracking reviews from the goddaughter!

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 29/10/2018 21:07

Ahh I've got quite a full basket on the book people! Anyone know if there are any discounts coming up??

very popular at our school- Land of Stories series.

LostInTheColonies · 30/10/2018 03:57

Check out Katherine Rundell. She has written several books, all with different characters and REALLY well-written unlike Jacqueline Wilson Great stories with kids having adventures in far-flung parts of the world. DD(9) very keen (and on J Wilson, too).
Also - The Girl, the Dog and the Writer in Rome; Katrina Nannestad.

DaysDragonBy · 30/10/2018 06:15

No suggestions but I also need to order some books!

agentdaisy · 30/10/2018 06:39

My dd is a bit older and also loves Harry Potter and David Walliams. At 9 she was reading things like:

Dork diaries
Ruby Redfort series
Horrible histories
Beast quest
Percy Jackson

She's also really into the Oxford Treetops Classics. Things like Shakespeare and Jane Austin but rewritten in modern English and condensed so it's accessible to children.

Nuffaluff · 30/10/2018 07:27

I second Katherine Rundell. My DS recently read Escape, and now we’re reading it to him as a bedtime story. It’s an exciting adventure story with well developed characters, appealing to girls and boys.
Also he loved ‘The Wizards of Once’ by Cressida Cowell so I second that too. Female and male characters again.
Another one he adores is the Simon Thorne series. It’s about a boy who can change into animals.

BookishOwl · 30/10/2018 07:33

Agree with Series of Unfortunate Events, DD2 whizzed through all 13 of these.

Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child

Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens, my 2 DD started reading these at 8/9

Alcatraz Smedry books by Brandon Sanderson are funny, imaginative and exciting

VenusClapTrap · 30/10/2018 07:43

The Wildings and its sequel, The Hundred Names of Darkness. About a colony of cats living in Old Delhi.

Rebecca36 · 30/10/2018 07:48

Warhorse is very good, a real weepy but suitable for a child of your daughter's reading ability.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 30/10/2018 09:10

brilliant thank you all for the suggestions. I'd just been looking at war horse I think she would enjoy the history of it too. I think a trio to the library to check out what she likes would probably be a good start with so many ideas!

I third Katherine Rundell. The Explorer is brilliant.
