Cars with manual 'stick' hanbrakes

Do any new cars offer these?

About to renew lease car contract and hand back the car I've had for two years.

It has an electronic handbrake switch. I don't like it. I don't trust it to do its job. I roll backwards i avoid hills. I miss my stick handbrake.

Also, I don't want a car that cuts out in traffic! One that switches the engine off.

Title should read handbrakes!

YABU.

Oh, that's not what you're asking? Well, you are. Both autohandbrakes and engine stops are great benefits to you. Autohandbrakes are more reliable than manual ones. Engine stops reduce petrochemical waste.

Get into the 21st century.

My 18 plate Fiesta has a traditional handbrake, it does have stop/start but it is easily switched off with a press of a button on the dashboard.

My Mini Cooper has a stick handbrake.

Haberpop · 29/10/2018 12:57

Mine also has Hill Assist which prevents rolling back on hill starts.

tinytemper66 · 29/10/2018 13:37

My 67 plate mini has a 'proper' handbrake!

DelurkingAJ · 29/10/2018 13:39

I loathe mine as it means you can’t balance on the bite point to do a hill start. Love it the rest of the time but hate that there isn’t a manual override for some situations (hill start exit from a tight parking space had me sweating recently...wouldn’t have blinked in our car with the manual handbrake).

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/10/2018 13:42

I have a 67 plate Skoda Fabia which is a good car anyway and it has a 'proper' handbrake. Like you I don't trust or get on with electronic ones and don't see the advantages.

It does have the engine switch off, but I like that. It starts again straight away once you need to move, so all it does is reduce fuel consumption and pollution. I can't see a downside of it.

HardAsSnails · 29/10/2018 13:42

We've recently been through this changing dp's car, he ended up with a Volvo V40, he really wanted an Audi but refuses an electronic handbrake.

My mini has a proper handbrake.

We don't like the electronic ones either and will continue to avoid them

Engine stops can be switched off, I got used to mine, it makes no difference to you at all. DH hates them!

But yes, you can avoid both!

Stephisaur · 29/10/2018 14:16

Good stop/start technology isn't noticeable.

The tech in my Mini is far superior to what was in my Nissan. It's worth test driving various cars (I don't think you'll be able to avoid it now) to see which manufacturers have technology that works for you.

As above, Mini still do cars with real handbrakes :)

siakcaci · 29/10/2018 14:20

What kind of car do you have now? Electric handbrakes should also have an auto hold/hill start function.

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 29/10/2018 14:20

My 17 plate fiesta has a mechanical handbrake. It's so much easier with that than the electronic one my previous car had. My dh's car has the electronic handbrake too and it's always breaking and costs an arm and a leg to fix each time and there is no manual override. I hate it.

Vicious2018 · 29/10/2018 14:34

We rent a car last summer in abroad. We put manual for the specifications. What we got was a hybrid with obviously automatic gears and electric handbrake. It was quite interesting for dh start to drive with this car on the other side of the road. But all went well and actually he really liked the car at the end. We have old VW.

ladydickisathingapparently · 29/10/2018 14:50

I’ve got a new Honda CRV - has a manual handbrake, stop start (but it can be switched off if you like). Nice features too like a reversing camera.

Elphame · 29/10/2018 15:07

My DP's new car has an electronic handbrake. I loathe it. Really hate it. Trying to reverse parallel park on a steep hill is an absolute nightmare.

I'll also be looking for a car with a proper one when my own car is due for replacement. And no parking sensors! The hysterical beeping from DH's car whenever it thinks something is too close is annoying and distracting.

CravingRaven · 29/10/2018 15:12

Another Mini owner. I’ve had 4 and they all have had ‘proper’ handbrakes. Current one is 68 plate Mini cooper, and 2 Countryman’s previous to that (64 plate & 62 plate) had proper handbrakes too.

Villanelle123 · 29/10/2018 15:16

I found when looking at cars that really only VW and the rest of that gang have the electronics.

I 100% would find it massively difficult to go back to using a real handbrake now. When driving an older car recently I drove along with the handbrake on and beeping at me and no lights on because I just wasn’t used to having to do it. Suppose I’d get used to it.

MaxPepsi · 29/10/2018 15:20

Mine is a 67 Octavia estate. It has a manual handbrake.

The 68 fabia, I had whilst mine was in for it's service also had a manual handbrake.

Mine does have the start stop but I like it.

HildaZelda · 29/10/2018 15:25

DH has a company car (passat) I'm insured to drive it, but I HATE it. Yes, it has one of those stupid push button brakes. It just never feels safe to me.

My friend has an Insignia which has one too. She was in Lidl recently, paying at the checkout as she saw her car slowly start to roll (slight slope in car park) and narrowly miss another car.

SmokingGun · 29/10/2018 15:29

I have a 17 plate Audi with a normal handbreak. It does have stop/start but you can turn it off with a button on the dash

DGRossetti · 29/10/2018 15:30

A man local to me was killed recently when a car with an electronic handbrake applied pinned him to a wall.

The same could happen with a manual handbrake - hence the advice on turning the steering when parking on a hill.

Villanellesproudmum · 29/10/2018 15:31

Volvo has a traditional handbrake

DeadCertain · 29/10/2018 15:48

Some Volvos have electronic parking brakes, ours did.
