Cars with manual 'stick' hanbrakes

Do any new cars offer these?

About to renew lease car contract and hand back the car I've had for two years.

It has an electronic handbrake switch. I don't like it. I don't trust it to do its job. I roll backwards i avoid hills. I miss my stick handbrake.

Also, I don't want a car that cuts out in traffic! One that switches the engine off.

To those with cars that have engines that cut off, do you find the noise of it switching on and off annoying?

WitchesWeb · 29/10/2018 16:38

Vauxhall you can switch off the start stop.

I rarely notice - our engine is so quiet anyway, and the restart is quite soft.

Pretty certain all engines cut out on idle now - it's the only way to pass the emissions regs Hmm

Every car we've had since 2005 has had this (Renault Scenic, and then 3 Citroen Grand Picassos ....)

Even my wanky prius has a physical "handbrake". Except it's foot-operated, but is still a creaky lever.

I've only had one electronic handbreak. In a VW Passat. No manual override. It was awful, hillstarts were a nightmare, so was parking on a hill, and the final straw - it turned itself on suddenly on a 40mph road. I had to "drag" the car, accelerating wildly, for 15 minutes, handbreak on, to a 20 road, all the while being beeped at by angry motorists going 40 +. Apparently a piece of gravel dust got caught in a sensor...!

Hate the thing!

I don’t notice the engine switching off, no. Modern cars are so quiet anyway.

My ford has a foot brake which I prefer to the electronic handbrake in my DH's Audi.
Sadly I don't have stop start, it is great for city driving and a way to make car driving a bit greener.

I hate hate hate electronic handbrakes, will continue to avoid them for as long as possible, i've not been driving years either and 'stuck in my ways' i'm 21 been driving two years.

It's just manufacturers making everything on cars more difficult and therefore more expensive to fix.

it's a faff turning it off, press brake, press button then wait 5 seconds for the bloody thing to turn off. If the battery died and you had no jump leads you'd be unable to bump start the car as the handbrake won't turn off without the battery working. I don't care how many fancy gadgets a car is fitted with nothing is more effective when sliding in the snow than gently lifting the handbrake while the brakes are also locking to stop you from moving.

Safety doesn't come into it vehicle manufacturers want one thing only and that's money.

I'm a mechanic and a couple of weeks back i saw a '17 Audi A1 with a manual handbrake, i asked the customers how they managed to get it and they said they didn't ask for either a manual or electronic they just got given a manual one! So it can be done
