I've been thinking of doing this but have no idea where to start - local butcher, online? Any recommendations please?

Muscle food - have a look at their website and you will see what I mean

BarryTheKestrel · 28/10/2018 16:39

Muscle food also. I find the quality comparable to my local butcher but the price so much better.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/10/2018 16:40

When we moved I used our local facebook page.

Now I buy from 2 different butchers for every day stuff and one lady who grows her own Dexter beef.

I have also found 2 local farm shops that have very local meat, fruit, veg etc, so I will be having a good look at those. One of them has very low food mileage as their USP another focusses on rare breeds.

There is a lot of choice out there, once you start looking closely Smile

Thanks all I'll follow these up

Also vote for muscle food. They have lots of different offers on usually.

goodnessidontknow · 28/10/2018 19:39

I have recently discovered Athleat. I used to use musclefood as their bulk meat is really cheap but I've found their packaging to be a bit suspect occasionally.

Athleat also provide higher welfare free range meat with full providence that is UK raised and butchered fresh for each order rather than gas packed and shipped from overseas.

On regular orders the prices aren't that much more than musclefood so I've made the swap as I'd prefer to pay a little more for better welfare standards. If anyone wants a discount code for an initial order let me know. I have no connection to them, just really pleased with the quality and value!

applespearsbears · 28/10/2018 20:03

Just having a look now, animal welfare is important to me but so is price. Why are Muscle/Athleat better than day free range meat from Lidl do you think?

Another one for Musclefoods. I can taste the difference between their meat and supermarkets theirs is denser and more filling. Also only way I've managed to persuade DH he actually likes steak.

goodnessidontknow · 28/10/2018 20:14

For me it's about price and convenience. Athleat do a repeat order option so it just arrives on my doorstep when I need it. The fact they are so keen on welfare standards is important to me too and this is at least 40% cheaper than the supermarket for similar.

Groovee · 28/10/2018 20:14

My mum uses Donald Russell.

bl00dyminecraft · 28/10/2018 20:15

I buy from our local farm shop, they have some great deals on bulk buys. I also prefer to buy locally where possible.

Ta1kinpeece · 28/10/2018 20:22

I use my local butcher as then I KNOW where the meat comes from
he vacuum seals for the freezer

any online company - ask for the postcode of the farm
if they will not supply it, ask why

if you go to the farm, do they confirm that they supply

there is SO MUCH dodgy meat out there
its better to eat less but better quality

SayNoToCarrots · 28/10/2018 20:22

What's the packaging like? I'm trying to move away from the endless plastic that comes with supermarket meat.

Ta1kinpeece · 28/10/2018 20:28

Plastic is not bad per se ....
it MASSIVELY reduces food wastage in some areas
it just needs to be appropriately disposed of

goodnessidontknow · 28/10/2018 20:30

Most of the packaging is recycled and recyclable.

LadyDeadpool · 28/10/2018 20:45

To be honest I can't afford to worry about animal welfare, I'm disabled on benefits with 2 kids to feed. We don't eat a lot of meat anyway but I have to put my family before the welfare of the animals. It doesn't make me feel good but tough shit.

Ta1kinpeece · 28/10/2018 20:47

THen eat less meat
sorry but if you do not care about what you eat you will end up with American Chlorine washed chicken

goodnessidontknow · 28/10/2018 20:49

I understand, I was in that position until recently. It's worth looking anyway as many of the prices are better than supermarket.

SayNoToCarrots · 28/10/2018 21:12

Where I live they only recycle bottle shaped plastic (seriously). How does it reduce food wastage? Meat in plastic seems to have similar use by dates to meat from the butcher.

Ta1kinpeece · 28/10/2018 21:16

"Meat in plastic seems to have similar use by dates to meat from the butcher."
When my butcher wraps up meat for me he does not put a date on it.

The documentary evidence world wide about how plastic and other proper packaging reduce the 30% of food that goes rotten between food and consumer is rock solid.

Bloodybridget · 28/10/2018 21:17

We get a meat box about once a month from Field and Flower, it's all very good and a lot cheaper than our local posh butcher.

Ta1kinpeece · 28/10/2018 21:18

Where is the meat reared?

CherryPavlova · 28/10/2018 21:18

We buy most of our beef and lamb from farm over the road. Pork - we are members of a village co-operative. Fish I buy from a Cornish firm and have it couriered. Chicken I buy from a local producer.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/10/2018 21:25

Jurassic coast meats, they either raise their own or work closely with other local farmers who are all welfare inspected

DunkandEggAgain · 28/10/2018 21:28

goodnessidontknow thank you. I've bookmarked your suggestion.
