When did you realise you were getting/feeling older?

I have driven since I was 17 and over the (many) years I have driven in various different countries on all sorts of roads. It never used to bother me what the weather was like or what time of day it was.
Today I drove home from Birmingham (approx 150 miles) the weather was horrendous and I was scared! People on the roads didn't have their car lights on and weren't indicating. The rain was coming down so hard I could hardly see the road and it was so dark on some roads that I hit a large puddle as I couldn't see it in the dark.
I am now sat at home with my dc in bed and I feel really old I never thought I would be bothered by driving but today (at 42 years old) I was!
What made you feel like you were getting old?

When I realised I had been driving for 30 years (see, I am 47 now OP :)

topcat2014 · 27/10/2018 20:58

On the other hand, I now have a personal trainer and am fitter than I have ever been - so it's not all down hill.

SputnikBear · 27/10/2018 21:00

After giving birth. I looked good before that. Now I look a mess - saggy stomach, no time to put on makeup or exercise and no money to get my grey hair dyed.

EggysMom · 27/10/2018 21:01

When I realised I could no longer eat a full chinese takeaway Grin I used to be able to eat, and eat more, and eat more - and yes, I have the BMI to prove that. But over the last year, my ability to eat a mountain has diminished, and my portion size is becoming more normal smaller.

3luckystars · 27/10/2018 21:02

I did 'Rock the Boat' on the floor a few weeks ago and my arse was making a clicky sound.

I have been noticing others things since. It crept up on me really quickly.

QuaterMiss · 27/10/2018 21:02

The day I realised I probably wouldn't be able to read all the zillion books on my wish list and in my basket. It was truly sobering.

3luckystars · 27/10/2018 21:02

Plus, probably knowing the Rock the Boat song itself made me old.

Something amiss with my emojis! I added a grin after it in the original!

cheeseoverchocolate · 27/10/2018 21:09

When a 20 year old told me my generation wouldn't understand technology. I am 30.

First year students at uni will have been born in 2000. They were one when 9/11 happened. 9/11 feels like yesterday to me!

bringbackthestripes · 27/10/2018 21:11

similar age to you op when I realised that I now couldn’t get up from kneeling without a loud exhale or groan because of a dicky knee and backache.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/10/2018 21:16

I remember the Berlin Wall coming down yesterday. And I know a lot about the Second World War as my grandparents fought in it and war stuff was in the consciousness growing up.

Even soldiers coming to school to talk about the 1st world war is still in living memory for me - and they've mostly been dead three decades.

Dermymc · 27/10/2018 21:16

I realised that the trainees looked young (approx 23), I was about 29.

mizu · 27/10/2018 21:18

Same as you re driving thing, I recently drove back from a friend's house through miles of thick wooded area that I had driven through for years when I was younger without a thought. I did not enjoy it one bit and couldn't wait to get to the nearest town where there were actual street lights

And today driving back from the other side of Bristol in this shitty weather was horrible. I'm 45, I am getting old.

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 27/10/2018 21:19

Going to a museum with my children and seeing things from my childhood and early adulthood on display. I'm not even 40 yet!

Jeffjefftyjeff · 27/10/2018 21:20

When a colleague was going home for his girlfriend’s parents’ 50th birthday. I was like: I have friends that age! And also: you are old enough to work?

sparklepops123 · 27/10/2018 21:24

CakeNinja · 27/10/2018 21:25

Just the general getting up off the floor and out of bed, making the tell tale noises!

sparklepops123 · 27/10/2018 21:25

Oh Yh I’m 46 !

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 27/10/2018 21:26

Been to a scan this morning. Nothing wrong with me. My periods are just getting out of whack. I’m now a women of a certain age. And it is all down hill from here.

I also have become very nervous of driving. I’m 43 next month and have been driving for nearly 20 years. And to be honest would be happy if I never had to sit in the drivers seat ever again.

whereiscaroline · 27/10/2018 21:26

When I realised I'd much rather stay home on a Saturday night than go out!

Truckingonandon · 27/10/2018 21:28

Right now, at 47. Feet hurt and I need comfy shoes, middle age spread has crept up and I'm getting achy joints. I'm also a wee bit dodery in the morning til I get going.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/10/2018 21:31

When I went to a younger friend’s birthday brunch- (me in my thirties and her/ her other friends in their 20s) and they spent the whole meal instagramming and obsessing over the perfect image- exhausting! I ate Grin

MiddlingMum · 27/10/2018 21:34

When I stood in front of a full length mirror for the first time in years and realised that my knees had sagged.

Glitteryfrog · 27/10/2018 21:41

When your friends have children who are starting secondary school.

I have no interest in the top 40 and I don't really understand how it works with streaming.

Burning the candle at both ends during the week means you go to bed at 9.45 on a Saturday night.
