In my house it's about a week...what do you do?

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 25/10/2018 21:01

About a month. Although mine are only up for 12 days as DDs birthday is 12 days after mine.

goingtotown · 25/10/2018 21:02

formerbabe. That’s so ungrateful, tell your friends & family to stop sending you cards if you bin them after opening them.

ShesABelter · 25/10/2018 21:03

I didn't even want to put mine up last week. They are messy and a pain to polish around so they go in the bin after a day or so.

Quickerthanavicar · 25/10/2018 21:27

formerbabe that's a bit rude.

Birdsgottafly · 25/10/2018 21:48

Those critising Formerbabe, obviously don't have Family /Friends who don't respe t your wishes.

My Sister buys me cards and balloons, even though she is asked not to. Gift giving, for her, is about her. She is kicking up a fuss be a use we want a no present Christmas. We always get her what she wants, whilst we get handed a load of crap.

Mine go straight In to the recycle bin. My children don't buy me cards and my youngest doesn't want them, either.

Pictures/cards my Granddaughter makes me go up for a couple of days.

TheMonkeyMummy · 25/10/2018 21:48

I don't understand all the fuss about cards. I also open them and then pop them in the recycling. I do ask people to not send them, have done for years. The only ones who listen are my parents and DH. Everyone else still sends. I don't think it's rude, why should we have to put things up in our own home, if we don't want to?

Side note, I do love homemade cards from my kids though.

formerbabe · 25/10/2018 21:51

I'm not ungrateful. I appreciate they sent it. I just don't see much point in putting it on display once I've read it. I also don't seem to have any surfaces to put them on...very few shelves and no mantelpiece

formerbabe · 25/10/2018 21:52

Fwiw, I don't throw away cards my dc do for me or cards which are personalised with photos.

SinglePringle · 25/10/2018 21:56

I’m the same as formerbabe. There’s only me and whilst I’ve a wide circle of friends, I only got 3 cards this year (we just don’t send them) and I hate clutter.

hmmwhatatodo · 25/10/2018 21:58

A maximum of one week generally and then they are either kept or ‘recycled’. I can’t imagine putting them straight in the bin!

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 25/10/2018 22:01

Why do you keep these cards up? Is it for yourself or visitors?

MrsTommyBanks · 25/10/2018 22:02

A week.
But I still have my late DGM last birthday card to me pinned to my bedroom wall and will never throw it away.
I wish I had kept her last Christmas card.

bumblebee39 · 25/10/2018 22:06

A couple of weeks or until the next occasion whichever comes first. Christmas cards I put up until the decs come down in time for NYE xx

NuzzleandScratch · 25/10/2018 22:11

Just taken mine down today, birthday was end of August! 😂

TeaByTheSeaside · 25/10/2018 22:33

Mine are still up. My birthday was 2nd of October. I'm thinking I might take them down next week.

I like looking at them and don't want to chuck them away too quickly as after all my friends and family made the effort of sending / giving them to me.

CakeNinja · 25/10/2018 22:44

My brothers birthday is 3 days after mine so as a child they HAD to come down so his could go up.
Now, I relish in having them up for at least 5 days Grin
But they go soon after that because I hate the clutter.
I don’t bother with displaying Christmas cards beyond the first 10 or so, they get opened and recycled straight away but people generally know my thoughts on this as I don’t send cards and tell anyone who cares that I don’t put them up so don’t tend to receive many.

GreenDinosaur · 26/10/2018 07:53

@SisterOfDonFrancisco, I can't speak for everyone but it's definitely for me/us. We don't have many visitors and don't really care what they think about what's on our mantle piece or shelves.

Although we do take personal ones down during MIL visits as she is incredibly rude and will start reading them.

fussychica · 26/10/2018 09:02

About a week although if any are especially beautiful I might leave that one up a bit longer.
I could never throw them straight in the bin as per a previous poster. I would consider that really offensive to the people who had bothered to remember, purchased a card and sent it. I would definitely tell those people if I preferred not to receive cards rather than waste time, money and paper.

rainingcatsanddog · 26/10/2018 09:05

I keep the ones from my kids. They are old enough to write so I have a lovely collection to keep.

One year my son wrote: "Happy Birthday. I love you but not in a marriage way." Which cracks me up.

DeadBod · 26/10/2018 09:08

Always a week.
DH birthday is the day after mine so I get prime position with my cards and his are tucked away, barely visible.

SayNoToCarrots · 26/10/2018 09:10

The biggest gap between birthdays / christmas here is three months. So up to 3 months 😂.

Monkeybunkey · 26/10/2018 09:12

Mine stay up until I want to dust the windowsill/piano/wherever they are. This could be up to a month as I find they hide the dust rather well!

BlueJava · 26/10/2018 09:18

I leave them up longer than a week - especially for my DCs. Their birthday is on 7th of the month, leave them up til end of month and I always ask before I take them down.

wendz86 · 26/10/2018 09:20

Prob about 2 weeks . Kids probably longer than mine .

Dowser · 26/10/2018 11:32

About a month.
