So how long does a 250ml bottle of shower gel last you?

I admit a kind of TAAT, but some were saying that a 250ml bottle of shower gel would last them 3 months. I think this is way outside the norm. Probably lasts me a few weeks. What about you?

A couple of weeks, maybe? I use soap too; I think we all do in this house - we always have both on hand. I sort of mix and match depending on how I feel that day. I feel like soap cleans more effectively, but gel is sort of fun and “extra”. (oh god. Wtf has my life become Shock)

Cannot quite see a pound-coin-sized blob cleaning a whole adult body, but I don’t mean to imply anyone is unclean; perhaps you are just super efficient. I’m definitely not.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/10/2018 11:50

Five or six months, surely you use a puff?

gastropod · 25/10/2018 12:00

A 250ml bottle of Korres shower gel will last me at least 3months, one shower per day, only me using it. Very hard water area.
But some other brands don't lather nearly as well,so you need loads more.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 25/10/2018 12:02

About 2 weeks maybe? I always buy massive bottles from Home Bargains so they last longer.

BentNeckLady · 25/10/2018 12:07

If you use a puff you only need a minute amount of shower gel to make a lather. I stopped using shower gel because of the plastic waste and now use bar soap - each bar lasts me about 6 months and I shower most days.

pumpastrotter · 25/10/2018 12:10

I was one of the posters who said a couple of months - I was using mine last night and thought about it properly, I could probably stretch it 1-2 months sole use, but I use a sponge and usually alternate between that and a bar.

abacucat · 25/10/2018 12:10

I really don't see the point of using a puff with shower gel. Soap is cheaper so if you are going to use a puff or face cloth why use shower gel at all?
I also don't see the point of being stingy in using such everyday products..

Mine last three months, easily. I lather up with a flannel/scrub mitt/loofah which makes the gel last much longer than if I used my hands.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 25/10/2018 12:11

Longer than 3 months I reckon- we live in a soft water area and I only need a 5p sized amount to get a decent lather with a bog standard Nivea body wash.

I don’t shower everyday though.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 25/10/2018 12:16

Mine lasts months. If you pour it onto a poof you really do not need much to make it later up into plenty enough to clean your body.

If you don't use a poof then of course it is not going to last long surely you'll be wasting lots of it if your only using you hands?

MontanaSkies · 25/10/2018 12:18

I use a Soap & Glory one and it lasts at least 3 months. I use a puff though which helps it go much further. A tiny little pump with the puff creates loads of lather, plus it's really strong smelling so it still feels luxurious. Before I got the puff the bottle would only last about a month.

Hmm... Now I'm thinking I can justify a more expensive body wash /posh bar soap!

Nonotmenori · 25/10/2018 12:19

That would last a week for me.

E20mom · 25/10/2018 12:20

My OH uses at least 2 per week. I have a different one.

BentNeckLady · 25/10/2018 12:20

It isn’t about saving money, wouldn’t feel clean if I didn’t use a puff.

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/10/2018 12:28

I use a little squirt on a puff. I'd say about a teaspoon's worth and it lathers up plenty. That would work out at 40 to 50 showers from a bottle, which ties up with 'lasting a few weeks' that I said up thread.

As for not feeling clean when using less than the large amounts that some people use, surely if you use loads, a lot just gets uselessy flushed down the drain anyway?

It's not about being stingy, however cheap things are, it's still wasteful use of resources if you use loads more than needed.

Ollivander84 · 25/10/2018 12:28

It's all down to how you use it I guess
My ex used to use about 100ml for a shower . I use about 10ml

overmydeadbody · 25/10/2018 12:29

I buy an expensive shower gel that I live the smell of, 250 ml bottle lasts me six months, and I use a proof and shower twice a day.

It is luxurious, I see no need to use soap instead. We use soap instead of handwash gel for washing hands, I can have a bit of luxury in my showers.

DS probably gets through one every two months, dp lasts four months, before they used poofs they used a bottle over two weeks so it's really saving.

Justanothernamechange2 · 25/10/2018 12:38

Me and DP have 250ml shower gel each (diff ones)
He showers every day, sometimes twice if hes been at football (max two days a week)

I shower most days - sometimes skip a saturday here and there if were not leaving the house.

DPs.. 7-10days
Mine.. 2 weeks ish.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 25/10/2018 12:40

It's not about being stingy, however cheap things are, it's still wasteful use of resources if you use loads more than needed.

Exactly. Just because shower gel doesn't cost much it doesn't mean anyone should use an excessive amount of it, especially given it mostly comes in plastic bottles.

People who use 250ml worth every 2-3 moths are using just 4-6 bottles a year. Some people on this thread are using 1-2 bottles a week that's between 52 and 104 plastic bottles a year, just from shower gel from 1 house. No wonder the bloody sea is full of plastic!

BarbaraofSevillle · 25/10/2018 12:52

And I hadn't even thought about the bottles heads I was thinking about the raw materials/chemical processes of making shower gel (used to work in a toiletries factory and there's some huge factories out there making all this stuff. Factories = lots of chemicals, water and energy).

You make a very good point. I generally buy and use what I want. But it turns out that what I want isn't really that much compared to a lot of people. Say I use 10 bottles of shampoo/conditioner/shower gel a year. That's a huge amount less than the bottle a week people.

I don't often buy drinks when out. I don't like fizzy pop and try to carry water, mostly because I don't want to pay for plain water and I feel guilty about the plastic bottles. Similarly for coffee in disposable cups.

But there will be many, many people who will buy a plastic drink bottle and/or a coffee in a paper cup every single day. That's hundreds of items a year Shock.

Puts my average of a couple of times a month purchases into perspective. It's a drop in the ocean (pun intended) compared to what many people see as normal. I'm not trying to sound smug by the way, just trying to ease my own guilt when I do what I see as a Bad Thing.

Parker231 · 25/10/2018 12:56

A bottle of Korres shower gel lasts me about two weeks. No idea about DH - he buys his own toiletries.

WalkingTed · 25/10/2018 12:59

about 1 bottle a week.... which this thread is now making me realise that's 52 empty shower gel bottles that go in recycling not to memtion the empty shampoo bottles etc.

im. switching to bars of soap

derekthe1adyhamster · 25/10/2018 13:06

I get given very nice shower gel (space nk, Milton brown etc) and use a puff. It lasts around 5-6 months although I shower every other day (rarely work up a sweat!!)
A bottle of lynx lasts my 2 teen boys about 2-3 weeks

AlpineButterfly · 25/10/2018 13:12

I hardly go through any shower gel at all. I probably use it only a few times a week and that's just to wash under my arms so I hardly need any. My skin is sensitive sometimes so I only really use water. I wouldn't even know how to go through one a week. I'll stop nagging DH for his excessive shower gel consumption based on this thread though because apparently he isn't excessive but just normal

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 25/10/2018 13:13

I buy Dove in 5L tubs and use it as hand wash and shower gel in reusable pump bottles. It lasts about 3-4 months and that's a family of 5. My bil gets it for us but sure you can buy them on eBay or Amazon.
