Unusual "best parts"

Inspired by the clotted cream thread, I wondered what unusual things have you exclaiming "but it's the best part!" that others may consider a mere after-thought?

For me, the best part of a roast is the gravy. If the veg isn't floating, there isn't enough. If it's not spilling over the side of the plate, that roast is dryyy.

Chicken wings would be nothing were it not for those last bits of meaty goodness stuck to the bone! Much better than the abundant, dull meat.

Sushi I only eat for the soy sauce. If my maki rolls haven't soaked for at least 30 seconds, they're not worth eating. I once asked for more of the good brown stuff at a fancy restaurant and was told by the owner that they are supposed to be eaten with a mere dip. I kid you not. I'm well aware how our Japanese friends eat them but please just bring me the damn sauce before I get withdrawal symptoms!

Ah, and the best part of toiletries is using the last drop of a bottle just before cracking open a new one. So strangely satisfying.

So, what has you saying "but it's the best part!"?

Egg yolk from fired egg on last bit of toast

Last few bites of beans on toast, when the sauce has soaked into the toast

First glug of wine

Crispy edges of bacon inside a still warm butty, with ketchup and FA dripping everywhere

Milk in the bowl after over-sugary cereal (there’s a chef who’s made ice cream out of this!)

Gari, with my sushi

The best part of roast chicken is the skin, closely followed by the jelly the following day, and the best part of lamb chops is the fat and the marrow. Delicious.

HouseOnTheLake · 24/10/2018 19:30

Ooh yes, roast chicken skin! So much nicer than the boring meat underneath.

People who don't eat the baked potato skin are weird.

Coldhandscoldheart · 24/10/2018 19:44

The flat, shiny surface at the top of the jar of jam. Even better if home made & a crust of sugar has formed.

MiriAmmerman · 24/10/2018 19:49

I love chicken skin, pork crackling, bacon rind... all the fatty bits basically. Bollocks to the wholesome meat. I would also always rather have leg or wing than breast if it's chicken or turkey - I find breast so dull and dry.
I like leftover cereal milk (lifting up the bowl and slurping) and the crispy bits on the edges of cakes as well. I also think the pastry is the best bit of any pie (especially the soft underneath bit that has been soaked by the filling).

MVLipwig · 24/10/2018 19:49

Surprised no one had mentioned pork pie jelly! And probably a bit low class for mumsnet but the broth from instant noodles, I’ve been known to add a stock cube so I can make even more.

MiriAmmerman · 24/10/2018 19:50

OMG yes to pork pie jelly!!!
I also enjoy Christmas dinner leftovers even more than the main event

HouseOnTheLake · 24/10/2018 19:52

the broth from instant noodles
YY, much better than the actual noodles! But of course we have to have something to soak up the broth with...

Crispy bacon rind is a gift from the gods. They should sell it in bags as a snack.

The unpopped kernels in a bag of popcorn Blush

HouseOnTheLake · 24/10/2018 19:55

I've just thought of another one: the best part of a bag of crisps is the crumbs that stick to the bag that you have to lick out get out with your finger. Salt and vinegar Chipsticks crumbs are a personal favourite.

The unpopped kernels in a bag of popcorn

Except you have to spend the next three days picking them out of your teeth Grin

A spoonful of cold baked beans from the tin before heating the rest

springmachine · 24/10/2018 19:57

Live the pork pie jelly the best.
Some pork pies just don't have a decent enough ratio

snowone · 24/10/2018 20:28

The crumbs at the bottom of the crisp packet are amaze....especially salt and vinegar or pickled onion. The gherkin on a McDonald's burger must also be saved until last, definitely the best bit of the burger!!

7salmonswimming · 24/10/2018 20:58

The crunchy bits at the end of a pointy baguette

The pastry of an apple pie

The first bite of a full English when everything is still hot

BearSoFair · 24/10/2018 21:07

snowone I was coming on to say the McDonalds gherkin too! Even better for me, DH and DSes don't like them so I only have to battle DD for their extra Grin

TheWiseWomansFear · 24/10/2018 21:07

No no no @snowone you eat the gherkin in the burger and ask for extra on the side Grin

dudsville · 24/10/2018 21:10

The best bit for me is, right now, heavily influenced by this thread! So I sometimes buy a small chicken, cook it, and just eat the bits I like best when no one else is around.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 24/10/2018 21:10

Rice pudding skin.
First sip of a coffee
Chicken drumsticks
The fat in the dish when you roast duck confit legs

LtGreggs · 24/10/2018 21:24

Remains of the apple crumble, eaten out of the serving dish. Or for breakfast next morning.

ClemClemFandango · 24/10/2018 21:35

The soggy milky toast from scrambled eggs on toast.

Thick gloopy skin on homemade rice pudding and custard.

Scraping the lovely burnt cheesy bits from the lasagne container.

Christmas dinner sandwiches on boxing day.

DiveBombingSeagull · 24/10/2018 21:37

Soggy yorkshire pudding from the centre closest the meat when it is roasted in the same dish

PosterMoster · 24/10/2018 21:41

The tails of the prawns (when fried or prawns wrapped in filo) = The best bit.

Shockers · 24/10/2018 21:43

The slightly burnt bits on top of cauliflower cheese, or cottage pie. The really brown bits on the corners of flapjack.

The butter... on anything!
