Unusual "best parts"

Inspired by the clotted cream thread, I wondered what unusual things have you exclaiming "but it's the best part!" that others may consider a mere after-thought?

For me, the best part of a roast is the gravy. If the veg isn't floating, there isn't enough. If it's not spilling over the side of the plate, that roast is dryyy.

Chicken wings would be nothing were it not for those last bits of meaty goodness stuck to the bone! Much better than the abundant, dull meat.

Sushi I only eat for the soy sauce. If my maki rolls haven't soaked for at least 30 seconds, they're not worth eating. I once asked for more of the good brown stuff at a fancy restaurant and was told by the owner that they are supposed to be eaten with a mere dip. I kid you not. I'm well aware how our Japanese friends eat them but please just bring me the damn sauce before I get withdrawal symptoms!

Ah, and the best part of toiletries is using the last drop of a bottle just before cracking open a new one. So strangely satisfying.

So, what has you saying "but it's the best part!"?

The burnt on bits at the edge of the pan when you do lasagne / cottage pie / fish pie etc. Ditto the crispy bits of pasta when you do pasta bake etc.

The skin off rice pudding or custard.

The BCBs - brown crispy bits at the bottom of the roast potato pan.

I have to make sure I've squished a spud to get extra ones for DS2.

Amen to this! I was about to type the same. So damn tasty.

Another one:-

A thick toastie slice of buttered bread, mopping the juices/fat of bacon &/or burgers from the frying pan.

Thick gloopy skin on homemade rice pudding and custard.

What's left in a tin of ambrosia custard after serving up. Yum. And the crunch of the first bite of a tunnocks tea cake. Squashed ones aren't as nice.

"Egg yolk from fired egg on last bit of toast" well you're almost right! It's actually the last bit of yolk on the last bit of tattie scone.

"Milk in the bowl after over-sugary cereal (there’s a chef who’s made ice cream out of this!)" well you can't say that and not tell us how to get the ice cream! Mind you dd will beat me for it! Her cereal is a case of lots of sugary milk and "er...are you having any cereal with that?" 😂😂

Supported by Ben Elton BEFORE he sold out - the crispy bits on the edge of a ready meal, particularly lasagne/canelloni! Basically grilled crispy and creamy cheese sauce.

Best "crisps" for bits at the bottom are cheesy Doritos or Frazzles.

The crispy pointy bits of honey roast parsnips.

@Graphista Blush The chef (and I) live in New York. Momofuku’s Milk Bar.

HOWEVER, I just found this:

Even better than this ice cream is Christina Tosi’s crack pie. So called because it’s as good as crack. I mean, I wouldn’t know, but it stands to reason from having tasted the pie. It’s sooooo good and very easy to make at home.

I’ve got so many of these, been thinking about them all day!

First bite of hot, buttered, white toast while the toast is still hot and crunchy

Leftover foam when you’ve finished your cappucino, especially if it’s got chocolate powder or brown sugar sprinkled on it

The tip of a wedge of Brie (poor etiquette, I know)

Mopping up the juices at the bottom of a salad with really good dressing, or just salt but really flavorful ingredients (eg tricolor salad leaving behind olive oil, salt and juices from the tomatoes with the odd bit of leftover mozzarella)

The crispy rice from the bottom of the pan, if you’re making it with a deliberately crispy bottom

First few sips of tea in front of the fire after a really cold walk, especially with a milk chocolate digestive. Rest of the tea is just boring

Lasagna juices

Heel of a homemade loaf of bread

The tiny stubby over-fried fries in a portion of Maccy D fries

Cucumber sandwiches from a cream tea (everyone I know hates them; it’s all about the butter!)

Dessert - always!

Defender90 · 25/10/2018 08:10

The soggy underside of the pastry on a steak pie.

crochetmonkey74 · 25/10/2018 08:51

The bottom crusty bits of a paella or the crusty bits of baked on lasagne.
The first spoon in a jar of Nutella.
The top bit of Lindt reindeers when they have been in the fridge and the chocolate is sooo thick

HouseOnTheLake · 25/10/2018 10:42

the juices at the bottom of a salad

Ooh yes, I forgot about this one! I've been known to drink the leftover juice straight from the salad bowl (in the discreet comfort of my own home, of course) Blush

The bottom crusty bits of a paella

Just in case you didn't know, this actually has a name! It's called Socarrat and I've actually eaten it at a restaurant as a stand alone dish. Very tasty!

The crispy skin of pan fried fish.

Save a big bit of buttered toast to mop up everything after your full English breakfast. That's the best bit!
