I fancy having a scary book to read on these dark nights. I’m a total beginner to this genre so please recommend me anything because I definitely wouldn’t have read it!

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, I highly recommend.

SuburbanCrofter · 24/10/2018 19:16

Came on here to say Dark Matter, Costco beat me to it Grin

I read one called The Chalk Men recently.

GlasgowWorrier · 24/10/2018 19:31

The Shining by Stephen King. Waaaaay scarier than the film, and that's pretty, um, haunting.

DinosApple · 24/10/2018 20:24

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by MR James - the master of the short ghost story imo. Perfect book for curling up by the fire with a glass of red.

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 24/10/2018 20:26

Michelle Paver also has one called Thin Air which I liked too.

TheLittleFoxes · 24/10/2018 20:27

The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters
The Silent Companions - Laura Purcell

ragged · 24/10/2018 20:29

Day Four is a bit squirmy.

alizarincrimson · 24/10/2018 20:30

The Loney and Devil’s Day by Andrew Michael Hurley.

SergeantPfeffer · 24/10/2018 20:31

Heart shaped box- joe hill
The snow child- eowyn ivey

RisingGround · 24/10/2018 20:35

Susan Hill has written several, but the best is The Woman in Black.

DH read one recently called The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. She has a second one out called The Corset.

Sophie Hannah's The Orphan Choir is creepy. DH read it, but I didn't want to as it has child deaths in it iirc.

Moominfan · 24/10/2018 20:38

Another for Michelle paver dark matter

RatUnholyRolyPoly · 24/10/2018 20:43

Ooh, I'm just placemarking on here because I like the idea of this!

Emlorn · 24/10/2018 20:48

I came onto the thread to recommend exactly what TheLittleFoxes beat me to!

OneStepMoreFun · 24/10/2018 20:51

The Somnambulist by Essie Fox. Read an extract of it earlier today, set in a graveyard by moonlight and it was so gorgeously atmospheric.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/10/2018 20:54

Last Days of Jack Sparks - brilliantly chilling, compelling and clever.

QueenofallIsee · 24/10/2018 20:55

The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert.... made me shudder

nephthys · 24/10/2018 21:29

Apartment 16 by Adam Nevill - all his books are good.
The Man in the Moss
Candlelight
Crybbe
December
The Chalice all by Phil Rickman
F.G.Cottam’s books are good too. Sorry I can’t remember titles, I read them a while ago.
Another vote for Dark Matter

dizzydaisies · 24/10/2018 21:46

Mr Clarinet, Nick Stone - not a ghostly, spooky book but voodoo, evil people, gruesome descriptions and it will stay with you for a very long time afterwards!

I would recommend the woman in black. So much better than the film.

wildewillow · 24/10/2018 21:58

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is supposed to be quite good. Inspired the film The Haunting and the new Netflix series of the same name.

LBOCS2 · 24/10/2018 22:02

White Silence by Jodi Taylor was very creepy. Sequel comes out tomorrow and I can't wait!

KimberWozRobbed · 24/10/2018 22:07

I read The Silent Companions when DP was away on a course and I had to sleep with the lights on....but I'm a big wimp with scary books.
