I fancy having a scary book to read on these dark nights. I’m a total beginner to this genre so please recommend me anything because I definitely wouldn’t have read it!

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by MR James - the master of the short ghost story imo. Perfect book for curling up by the fire with a glass of red.

Susan Hill has written several, but the best is The Woman in Black.

DH read one recently called The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. She has a second one out called The Corset.

Sophie Hannah's The Orphan Choir is creepy. DH read it, but I didn't want to as it has child deaths in it iirc.

The Somnambulist by Essie Fox. Read an extract of it earlier today, set in a graveyard by moonlight and it was so gorgeously atmospheric.

Mr Clarinet, Nick Stone - not a ghostly, spooky book but voodoo, evil people, gruesome descriptions and it will stay with you for a very long time afterwards!

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is supposed to be quite good. Inspired the film The Haunting and the new Netflix series of the same name.

I read The Silent Companions when DP was away on a course and I had to sleep with the lights on....but I'm a big wimp with scary books.
