Why do people comment on my eating habits?

Yesterday I went for dinner with some people from work. I was not able to finish the plate, it was way too much and I would have felt bloated and tired if I had. Two people commented 'oh come on, really? You can finish that!' Etc. I didn't want a dessert for the same reason and there were comments about his too.
A couple of the people were overweight and I would have been slated for saying anything about how much they ate. Why is this acceptable?

Hmm not sure what happened to my sentence there Blush it was meant to read "which is why" not "which so"

Well done!

I come from a family where we were encouraged to finish all the food on our plates. It was an exceptionally hard habit to break and one I still struggle with now.

It's exceptionally rude to comment on it, you are right. But they probably have come from a similar background to me. Try not to take it to heart.
You could always flip it round and comment on how much they've eaten, If you felt very aggrieved.

Best to just feel happy that you know when you're full and can stop there.

Thanks for the responses. My comment about drinking was really just to confirm that it's not about calories or diets or anything, I just can't eat loads and loads of food but I can drink. I wasn't drunk so I don't think they were worried about that.

I think most people over eat, more so in those circumstances so it draws attention to their own bad habits if you don't. Its almost expected that you'll eat loads when out. I get the same when in pubs as I don't drink.

They might have been making comments regarding your drinking if they know you well —you get less drunk if you eat properly beforehandz

I find large plates of food too much but am quite happy if I see a starter I like to have that as the main course. Not really a pudding eater either unless it is a citrus based one so tend to have the cheese board. I don`t worry what others think I just do not want to feel ill from over eating.
