Can we discuss the film Titanic?

I've just found it on an obscure movie channel. Do you like it? As a teenager I loved it but recently it occurred to me that it's a bit weird to set an entirely fictional and unlikely romance against the backdrop of a real and horrific accident. You'd not find anyone making a 9/11 romance, so why is it ok to do this? Maybe this should be in aibu?!

WS it notnonenifbthr main problems thatnlife boats were also leaving half empty. They certainly didn’t have nearly enough but not all the boats were full. No one actually knew what to do, there was no trainonb, no drills and no safety information given. A catalogue of errors in getting assistance didn’t help.

CoolCarrie · 22/10/2018 22:19

It is a shit film, but looks beautiful, full of inaccuracies like the famous paintings going down with the ship. A Night To Remember is a fair better film, full of brilliant character actors and very moving, one line where a father says goodbye my dear son makes me sob.

CoolCarrie · 22/10/2018 22:21

And as if she wouldn’t have sold that necklace asap, she would need the money to live on!

DonnaDarko · 22/10/2018 22:22

The best part is when the ship sinks lol

Sorry

If we’re talking about poor taste and Titanic, I thought this was pretty piss poor - Adele’s Titanic fancy dress party complete with life jackets and frozen hair.

Oh I loved that film, I was 16 when it came out and Di Caprio obsessed.

However, I agree with the pp who mentioned Rose casually chucking the diamond overboard like a piece of old chip paper. Although thinking back, that diamond looked like it was made of plastic anyway.

Now I know you say that 9/11 won't be so shocking to future generations but I disagree. I discuss 9/11 with kids who weren't born then and they find it wholly shocking. Even the naughty ones go quiet.

9-11 has been covered alot. The real question is why Hollywood ignores Hiroshima.

There is a 9/11 musical, it's called Come From Away and it's opening in London in the new year! Based on the true events of the planes that had to land in Gander.

Love Titanic, caught the last 5 minutes tonight and still got teary.

Honeyroar · 23/10/2018 13:43

Where was/is the Titanic exhibition? Sounds interesting.

treaclesoda · 23/10/2018 13:47

Where was/is the Titanic exhibition? Sounds interesting.

There's a huge museum in Belfast, although I think the earlier poster was maybe talking about one in America

Veterinari · 23/10/2018 13:51

The Everest disaster film is in a similar vein and that only happened (I think) in 1997. It’s pretty harrowing.

Also there are lots of 9/11 films.

But yes I think time and distance make them more ‘accepted’

Maidsrus · 23/10/2018 13:59

There’s loads of films about tragedies and atrocities ... war films, westerns, disasters...

I love the film

Avegemitesandwich · 23/10/2018 14:05

If she did die at the end, she didn't technically die in her bed did she, she died in a probably not that comfy bed in a tiny room on board a research vessel.

SilverySurfer · 23/10/2018 14:15

My paternal grandfather died on the Titanic so decided I should watch it when the film was released. I thought it was rubbish and although have tried a couple of times, have never made it through to the end.

ShatnersWig · 23/10/2018 14:21

There was a previous Hollywood film in the 1950s that put a fictional story on board the Titanic. As someone who has been interested in the Titanic for over 30 years and met two of the survivors, I much prefer A Night to Remember which is almost documentary in style and although not 100% accurate has very few fictionalised elements and is far, far more moving. Some of the casting was superb.

James Cameron's film... for me, it's the attention to detail in recreating the ship and for the time the special effects really were astonishing. The china, the carpets, everything is accurate in that respect. He's an acknowledged expert in the ship. He felt he needed the fictional element to flit between classes and get people emotionally involved. I disagree with that (you wouldn't even be aware there was a second class, for instance).

As for Titanic the Musical, I've seen it several times. The music is stunning and I have found it profoundly moving.

Jitters22 · 23/10/2018 14:25

Yay for this thread!

I thought it was shite then and it's still shite. Awful film, I just never understood its success.

Glad to discover after all this time, that others feel the same.

dingdongdigeridoo · 23/10/2018 14:29

I liked the historical elements of the film. It was interesting to learn about how the titanic sunk and to see the recreation of the ship in such amazing detail. I think it captured the sense of fear very well.

The romance part of the movie was pretty shite. They’re such an odd couple. Even though they’re the same age she looks so much more mature than him. They had much better chemistry when they were in Revoluntionary Road together.

Remember Me is the weird romance movie that ends with 9/11. It’s terrible.

Peraltiago · 23/10/2018 14:30

Not seen it for years, but I hate how emotionally manipulative it is - as if it’s not such a hideous story to begin with, they have to add in a doomed love affair as well. It does upset me, all the emotive music and people dying horribly.

And on a lighter note, as I think a pp above noted, they are in waist-deep water for an unfeasible amount of time Grin. This is the Arctic Ocean in the middle of the night, they would have been immobilised with hypothermia long before the ship went down...

ShatnersWig · 23/10/2018 14:32

@Peraltiago Ah, now you're touching upon a conspiracy theory. Did some survivors lie about how they survived on an upturned boat for several hours when several of them had already been submerged in freezing cold water?

MrDarceysMistress · 23/10/2018 14:37

I always wondered why if they could recover Rose’s portrait, did no one give a fuck about the Picasso’s? Surely worth a Bob or two?

ShatnersWig · 23/10/2018 14:41

@MrDarcey Rose's portrait, unlike the other paintings, was in the safe which supposedly prevented major damage....

ShatnersWig · 23/10/2018 14:42

And pencil seems to survive in sea water for longer than oil paints.

BlancheM · 23/10/2018 14:46

The romantic leads are so unconvincing but maybe I've been influenced by my aunt shouting out, 'she looks like his bloody mother!' for the entire duration of the film when it was released 😂

dustarr73 · 23/10/2018 15:28

And who could forget the soundtrack.Celine Dion warbling " My heart will go on" Awful film awful song
