is a 1.5 mile walk/scoot to school be too much for my 4yo?nothing physically wrong with him. i'm worried i'm making him walk too far? he goes on his scooter, takes about 30 minutes each way. he is really tired atm, but that might just be school anyway? How far do yours walk?

Mine did walk even longer distances with ease, but then all children are different.

Give it some time and if he’s very tired and grizzly then give it up, at least for a while.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 22/10/2018 11:08

My 3 year old does slightly less than that (1.25 miles) to preschool. He walks it in about 20 mins. We do it probably 8 times a week. He was very tired by the weekend initially but half a term in he seems to be coping better.

Sorry, I realise I sound a bit smug, I really didn’t mean it that way.

britnay · 22/10/2018 11:41

No, not too much for that age. He'll get used to it :)

formerbabe · 22/10/2018 11:41

I think that's really far for a four year old tbh. I think as well they find school exhausting at that age.

I'm very sceptical that a 3 year old could walk this distance in 20 minutes..are you sure it's 1.25 miles? That's two kilometres. My dcs school is about a kilometre away and it took my dd 20 minutes when she was reception age. She's 8 now and it now takes just under 15 minutes.

Aviana · 22/10/2018 13:13

Definitely not too far depending on the child. If it works for you then keep in with it. A lot of children at our school walk that.
DS would happily do double, DD would whine the whole way...
Just invest in decent coat/shoes and buy several identical pairs of gloves!

Witchend · 22/10/2018 13:17

Not at all, that's similar to what mine had to do to get to infant school via the juniors.
With a scooter he may well quite enjoy it.

SoyDora · 22/10/2018 13:21

Well it depends on the child! It’s just over a mile to DD1’s primary school (she’s 4) and then another half a mile to DD2’s pre school (she’s 3). So DD1 walks just over a mile to school and DD2 walks just over 1.5 miles to pre school. They cope fine. They’ve always walked lots though (DD2 hasn’t been in a pushchair since she was 15 months old as she just refused!)

folduptheocean · 22/10/2018 13:35

My 3 year old will do 5 miles walks, but would moan about doing 1.5miles to school everyday!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 22/10/2018 13:39

Should be fine! My 4 and 2 year olds regularly do 5 Miles or more on the walks we go on.

NannyR · 22/10/2018 13:45

I don't think that's too far - I look after a four year old and a three year old, the eldest just started reception and the school is just over a mile away. They both walk or run there in about twenty minutes and then the three year old walks back home again, plus he walks to playgroups/library/music class etc, so around 5-5.5 miles a day.

TheFaerieQueene · 22/10/2018 13:48

I used to walk further than that to school at 4 - no scooters in the early ‘70’s either. I’m sure he will be fine.

Winegumaddict · 22/10/2018 13:49

Sounds fine to me. I think school is quite tiring for them but the walk should be fine. My 3 year old walks the dog with me everyday we do 3ish miles usually and she's fine. She's walked it since her sister was born when DD1 was nearly 2. We've sped up now thankfully!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/10/2018 13:50

On a scooter, balance bike or pedal bike my 3 year old would cover that distance with ease, as fast as I can keep up.

On foot there would be a lot of whining and foot dragging.

BikeRunSki · 22/10/2018 13:53

Not really that far. He’s probably tired because it is/is nearly half term. I always find my children (7 and 10) are exhausted by October half term, more so than any other school holiday.

Fatted · 22/10/2018 13:57

Not far. My Ds 3 and 5 would walk that. Do let your DC build up to it though if they're not used to walking that far. Also they're bound to be tired after school. I practically have to drag my kids home after school and it's only 5 mins down the road!

MamaLovesMango · 22/10/2018 13:58

DD is 5 and we walk about that to and from school unless we’re running late and have done since she started school at 4. It’s never been a problem. She’s tired because it’s half term but if I had been driving her she’d still be knackered, schools intense!

I do know of one PFB child in her class that lives less than 0.5 miles away from the school and his mother is always driving him because he ‘just wouldn’t cope and would be too tired’ to walk on a regular basis Hmm

FissionChips · 22/10/2018 13:59

Not too far at all, suprised some think it is.

kaytee87 · 22/10/2018 14:00

My 2yo can walk that far with no issues. In fact he walks 3 miles sometimes at the weekend when we go to a country park.

Is he getting enough sleep? Approx 12 hours

Her0utdoors · 22/10/2018 14:08

Mine would be OK with this, but I wouldn't expect much more of her activity wise on a school day. I did try and get her to walk the two mile round trip to drop her brother at nursery before and after school as well, but that definitely was too much.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 22/10/2018 14:29

formerbabe

Sorry, I seem to have overestimated. Its 1.8km from our house.

Lookingforadvice123 · 22/10/2018 14:34

My DS is 2.10 and walks about half a mile to pre-school and back, he often moans and I don't think I could get him to walk much further! He is lazy though and was a late walker, he'd be more than happy sitting in the pushchair even at this age. He can't scoot (or rather won't even try the one he has) so I think on a scooter is fine!

FurryGiraffe · 22/10/2018 14:48

It's not too far- he's just not used to it yet. It doesn't matter how far they might walk at the weekend when our splashing in puddles/doing something fun: a walk to/from school is functional, often not interesting, and comes at the end of a tiring day. Some moaning, especially at first, is common.

We have just under a mile to walk and DS1 moaned like hell for the first half of reception. He was genuinely tired, but also didn't see why we couldn't always drive (we could- I chose to walk when it was possible). He got used to it (and now cycles to school which he positively loves).

InDubiousBattle · 22/10/2018 15:42

My ds is 4 and it's 1.1 miles to his school, he walks there and back every day easily. My dd sometimes does it twice a day so 4.4 miles for the school run alone. It takes us much longer on the way home, uphill and more tired I think!
