Just pulled 5 lice out I mean. Bloody fast crawlers.

Cheap conditioner and a nitty gritty comb.

Meet0nTheIedge · 22/10/2018 09:58

Hedrin plus nitty gritty, never been able to totally get rid with just the nitty gritty and conditioner. The nitty gritty is the most hated object in our house Sad.

What ShowofHands said. Lots of conditioner and then nitty gritty comb every other day for about a month. I also give hair a run over with hair straighteners to fry any little bastards that survive. Also, you need to be religious about tying long hair back for school.

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 22/10/2018 10:01

Can you buy the nitty gritty comb in shops or just online?

Hedrin, don’t even attempt to get rid without that stuff. I tried for a week to get rid of my DD’s with tea tree conditioner and a nit comb. It was painstaking and the bastards never seemed to go. As soon as I used Hedrin, they were gone.

Babdoc · 22/10/2018 10:09

I used a battery powered comb on my kids 20 years ago, that electrocuted lice and combed out the nits, without any toxic chemicals. A quick google shows that Boots still sell an own brand version.
Might be worth you getting it, to save repeated toxic chemical exposure if your kids get reinfected at school on a regular basis.

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 22/10/2018 10:10

How many times should you use Hedrin? Do they only kill the live lice and then you have to do it again for when the nits hatch in few days time? Or does Hedrin kill both?

I’m literally sat here in a towel and just been through mine with a nitty gritty! If I’d found any I’d be using Hedrin too.
The kids use the green vosene kids shampoo which is a good repellent.

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 22/10/2018 10:12

Oh this is SO GROSS!

mummmy2017 · 22/10/2018 10:13

The nitty gritty comb was the only one that removed the nasty it eggs..
They don't come out with treatments..
I also never liked putting chemicals on my children.
So just comb night and day, as part of routine...
That way you catch it early, and never get it as an infestation.

makeitsol · 22/10/2018 10:17

Am I weird in that obviously I hate the kids having lice but if they do I really make a thing if it and find it so relaxing
Big cup of tea, run a deep warm bath for them sit them in and spend ages with the nitty gritty it’s so satisfying getting them all out
Then cleaning all the hairbrushes in a sink full of hot water and antibacterial ..... it’s almost a ritual i think I’m really odd 🤣

BiggerBoat1 · 22/10/2018 10:21

Nitty gritty. Every day. Nothing else worked for us. Do yourself with the nitty gritty too.

mummmy2017 · 22/10/2018 10:22

No DD liked to nit hunt her sisters head and pop them.
Bonding...

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 22/10/2018 10:24

In Boots. There are lots of different types of Hedrin - once spray gel, once liquid gel, mousse, another protect and go shampoo, treat and go lotion..... which do I get?!

BluePigeon · 22/10/2018 10:39

Nitty gritty comb and lots of conditioner.

Then blow dry your kids hair because it dries the eggs and any remaining lice out. You should be rid of them in a week.

LBOCS2 · 22/10/2018 10:43

We have found the Lyclear shampoo the most effective treatment. We do: nitty gritty and conditioner comb one evening, Lyclear shampoo the next, conditioner comb two day's later. Blow dried after every wash, does the trick (although we have to do it frequently because 6yo DD likes to touch heads with other children at school and keeps getting reinfected 🙄). We used the mousse and it didn't do the job, they were still moving as they were combed out.

AwdBovril · 22/10/2018 10:44

I have successfuly got rid of nits with just pound shop conditioner & a nitty gritty. DD has caught them twice, she has bum-length, very thick hair. You need to section it & work from the front backwards, clipping it up as you go to stop an crwling into the bit you've already done. (Assuming it's long enough that it needs clips.)

French plaits are a good preventative measure. Usually...

Meet0nTheIedge · 22/10/2018 10:49

The nitty gritty is fine if your kids tolerate it, mine detested it, wriggled, squealed, so it ended up tugging and scratching their scalps and probably missing parts, it was always absolutely hellish. We haven't had them for a few years now thank goodness.

CoperCabana · 22/10/2018 10:58

Somehow or other, my kids have never had nits til now. Well, I think. My daughter had about 5 or 6 tiny grey dots on her scalp but nothing else, no white bits or anything. They could all be removed by hand and did not seem to be moving. Is this nits?

AwdBovril · 22/10/2018 11:03

Headlice aren't grey, they are usually brownish, if they've fed they are obviously red in the middle. The eggs are tiny & dark brown / nearly black, with a tiny stalk.

CoperCabana · 22/10/2018 11:12

Thanks @AwdBovril maybe I am stressing (and scratching my own head!) about nothing!

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 22/10/2018 19:33

So I’ve been using the nitty gritty comb today (found it in boots) but are there any chemical treatments that actually work really well?

OP posts:
mummmy2017 · 23/10/2018 11:33

Just keep combing, no need to treat with chemicals...
Ours were gone in 2 days including the egg shells.

Crunchymum · 23/10/2018 12:03

The nitty gritty comb is so expensive. Sounds like it's worth it?
