Period pain

MidiMitch · 22/10/2018 03:48

Lying in bed, middle of the night with stomach wrenchingly awful period pain. I've had 25 years of nights like this. Feeling thoroughly fed up. Can anyone cheer me up?

Are you on any form of contraception?

MidiMitch · 22/10/2018 03:50

No

Have you seen GP for special painkillers?

Could you take the pill or something that can help?

Graphista · 22/10/2018 04:22

What have you said to dr? That is not normal. Do you already have a diagnosis?

Aviana · 22/10/2018 06:42

Oh, that is miserable, and I know what it feels like. I was led to believe it was normal to be in so much pain. I asked my parents if I could go on the pill and was told the pill was just for sluts and I was making it out to be far worse than it was just so that I could have the pill! So I assumed it was one of those things that everyone got on with but never talked about. After a couple of times of me vomiting and passing out, my (now) DH called his mum to ask her what to do. She told him to get me to the doctors!

First thing I was given was high strength ibuprofen, with instructions to track my periods and pre-period signs and to take the first dose before the period arrived. For some reason it works better if you take it before it starts, pain relief and lessening the bleeding.

Now, post DC and post a couple of operations for endometriosis removal, I'm on the pill (cerazette) and it is life-changing.

MidiMitch · 22/10/2018 06:51

I've also had endometriosis removals and I know that the pain I have now is nowhere near as bad as it used to be but still miserable. Always in the middle of the night too. Definitely worst part of being female ☹️

Have been on pill before but made me put in loads of weight. I have to be really careful with my weight as I can easily put loads on.

Have you had children? My periods got so much worse after I did. I use a hot water bottle/co codamol/hot showers.

Dread my time of the month. It wears you out doesn't it!

Considered a hysterectomy at one point but then I'd go straight into early menopause

Is a hysterectomy something you have thought about or a womb ablation?

YeOldeTrout · 22/10/2018 07:10

Which prescription painkillers has GP given you but didn't work?

Bouchie · 22/10/2018 07:13

Have you tried acupuncture? Really good for period pain. You would need about 3 months of treatment but totally helped my lifelong (well since being 11) monthly agony. Also reduced my vile moods. Well worth considering.

Aviana · 22/10/2018 07:15

Mine got better after DC so I think it's just chance!
Which type of pill did you try? I've had the combined before which affected me differently to the mini pill.
Definitely worst part of being female. I once read some historical fiction where it was referred to as the curse. Which is what it is now known as in our house Grin (although I probably ought to stop that now that I have a DD!)

PoptartPoptart · 22/10/2018 08:42

I don’t tend to get pain during my period but I do suffer from excruciating ovulation pain so I can sympathise op.
Some very good advice I got on here once is to keep a period tracker (I use the Clue app on my phone but there are lots to choose from)
I worked out roughly when the pain was likely to occur each month and started taking paracetamol/ibuprofen as a preventative measure the day before. Sort of to stop the pain before it starts iyswim.
It definitely helps.
Maybe give it a try?

PoptartPoptart · 22/10/2018 08:43

Sorry, just noticed that Aviana up thread has already suggested this!

Vinorosso74 · 22/10/2018 08:59

Definitely a trip to GP needed. I can sympathise, as a teenager mine were awful and I would throw up. The pill helped so much and only had mild cramps.
Since having DD and getting older mine vary on pain levels month to month although I feel it in my back now which I never used to.

Graphista · 22/10/2018 13:13

Have you had any other treatment apart from I'm guessing laser removal and pill?

I've had a course of pro-stap and that helped a lot although I had a little trouble with side effects but you may not.

How long ago was surgery? New techniques being developed constantly. I'm awaiting appointment later in week to talk to my GP about it again.

rosie39forever · 22/10/2018 13:19

Mirena coil, no periods, no pain!

QueenOfIce · 22/10/2018 13:21

Feel for you op I have awful period pains and no painkillers touch it. I bought a cheapish tens machine from boots and that helps enormously. Hope you feel better soon.

Mishappening · 22/10/2018 13:26

How miserable for you - I absolutely sympathise with you. I got rid of my uterus once it had served its purpose - and never regretted that decision.

mumto2babyboys · 22/10/2018 14:21

@Mishappening

I have thought about doing this once I'm a bit older

Do you mind if I ask about your experience. Did it kick start you into early menopause straight away?

mumto2babyboys · 22/10/2018 14:23

Any coil is only is only suitable if you have given birth. Very painful to get fitted if you haven't experienced child birth

CocoLoco87 · 22/10/2018 14:26

Paracetamol doesn't touch the sides and i can't take ibruprofen. The only thing that works for me is taking 2 Imodium Plus as soon as I start followed by a 3rd tablet a couple of hours later. I also wear a heat patch on the first couple of days.

It's a rough old time for some women isn't it Sad

Graphista · 22/10/2018 14:43

Coil also not recommended always with endo and personally having read FAR too many horrific stories regarding women being blocked from having them removed if they do have problems has put me right off! I'd never have one and I've said as much to Dd too.

BackBoiler · 22/10/2018 14:48

I had a hysterectomy a year ago...no looking back! No menopause so far at 34..i still have my ovaries.
