Period pain

Lying in bed, middle of the night with stomach wrenchingly awful period pain. I've had 25 years of nights like this. Feeling thoroughly fed up. Can anyone cheer me up?

I can't get anyone to agree to a hysterectomy for me. Apparently it's not that bad (how would they know?!) and as I have issues with my bones etc they're worried about osteoporosis etc.

I expect I'm going to be told I have no idea how bad your pain, which is true, but I get criplling pain which painkillers don't touch once it's got a grip. However ordinary paracetamol helps me tremendously provided I take it before the pain takes hold.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/10/2018 15:36

Orgasm.

Buscopan.

I really sympathise, I had terrible period pains for about 30 years until I discovered one of the above worked quite well and one worked quite brilliantly Wink.

If I have endo pain, orgasms cause me agony! I recommend ibruprofen and cocodamol, if poss take the ibruprofen from the day before you’re due so it builds up, plus buscopan, tens machine and hot water bottle/beanbag/heatpack. I also practically live in the bath for 2 days a month, and if I have to get out to sleep, low on your back and prop your knees up with a pillow. Flowers

Rubbish about not having a coil if you haven’t had children, millions of women around the world who haven’t given birth have coils, I haven’t given birth vaginally I had a section and found the fitting of a mirena only mildly discomforting and drove home afterwards, and for every horror story on “the internet” about the coil there are hundreds of women with positive stories. The mirena saved me from massively flooding periods that were so painful I used to throw up, had it for two years now and periods are thankfully a distant memory, I bloody love mine.

mumto2babyboys · 22/10/2018 17:42

@rosie39forever

Not rubbish it's a medical fact. Also we are all different sizes internally.

They refuse to fit coils in teenagers because it's so painful unless you've had a baby. Obviously being pregnant enlarges your womb and makes it less painful than for someone who had never been pregnant.

You've been pregnant, it's a lot different but only if you had a planned section without going into labour?

Graphista · 22/10/2018 19:44

And I for one don't think it's at all kind or acceptable for you to be SO dismissive of the pain and trauma many women have experienced with the coil and in particular mirena.

If what's happened with mirena happened to men it would have been withdrawn!

rosie39forever · 22/10/2018 20:29

Actually the use of IUDs worldwide by teenagers is out stripping the use of contraceptive pills as it is more reliable than remembering to take oral contraception, and as for refusal to fit in teenagers they actually make a small coil called Jaydess which is specifically designed for teenagers/ young women who haven’t given birth, and also I didn’t have a planned section it was an emergency.
I definitely was not dismissive of the OPs pain I offered a possible solution that worked well for me when I suffered from a similar problem, I am so glad that the mirena hasnt been withdrawn as it literally saved me from severe anemia and crippling pain.

Get to the GP and ask for help!

I was prescribed mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid - as a pp said, to be taken before the pain started.

Changed my life.

BackBoiler · 22/10/2018 21:07

I was offered a coil before children and many of my friends have too! I think the refusing before children is rubbish.

Fluffyears · 22/10/2018 21:27

I feel your pain literally. I used to writhe around begging my mum to kill me as I was throwing up (painkillers useless because of that) and in such awful pain. I can’t take any codeine based painkillers as they make me faint. I have found ibuprofen at maximum dosage, paracetamol, buscopan and hot water bottles help. i’m not on any contraception as we want a baby :( I seem to have a lot of clots and my womb is contracting to push them out. I get severe cramp in my stomach, back and legs but at least it isn’t like it was as a teenager.

Woodifer · 22/10/2018 22:13

Try taking a mini aspirin every day for a week before you're due on (if you know when/ are regular)

I find only NSAIDs work for me - normally ibuprofen (some people get prescribed mefanamic acid) - take a first slightest twinge (don't let it get bad first) - take with food/ milk to help portect your stomach.

Heat! hot water bottle, microwave wheat bag, hot bath.

As above buscopan
