What did you not have growing up?

That 'everybody else in the world!' had? For me it was a tamagotchi. My mum was afraid of it waking me up at night because she heard you couldn't switch them off. I desperately wanted a 101 dalmatians one. I have a lump in my throat thinking about it now! It felt so lonely to be the only one in the playground without one. I even looped a Christmas cracker keyring over my finger and held it in my hand so I could pretend to myself I was like the others. Blush

What about you guys?

Central heating. Mum put it in years after I left, but she won't turn it on.

Witchend · 21/10/2018 23:55

Colour TV/Video player etc. This was 80s/90s too. Grin
Sparklingbrook My parents finally got a video player in 1997 (after I'd moved out) when everyone else was upgrading to DVD players. Were you after that?

We almost never got the "in thing" but occasionally we would get them when they were going out of fashion if they were cheap. Grin

Catren · 21/10/2018 23:56

A cabbage patch doll. They were "too ugly" so I wasn't allowed one. There's a message to send a 5yo girl! But I also wasn't allowed a barbie doll so not sure what the philosophy was..

Central heating. Many a morning was sat in front of the gas oven with its door open trying to heat the place up. We didnt know any better so didn't miss out as such. Even now the smell of a gas hob takes me back to those cold mornings. We eventually moved house to one with storage heaters and thought it would be heaven but it really wasn't. The heat at night was unbearable together with the dry air. Considering we had been use to chilly drafty living. We ended up getting rid of the storage heaters. Never did get use to it.

PickAChew · 22/10/2018 00:01

I didn't have central heating until I was 11.

Sindy was considered far more appropriate than barbie.

I also wasn't allowed to wear trousers until about 11.

TalkInRiddles · 22/10/2018 00:02

@sparklingbrook - out of curiosity why weren't you allowed to watch IT? I have a friend who wasn't allowed to watch it but I didn't really get why.

Just curious 🤷‍♀️

socksortights · 22/10/2018 00:03

I had a Cricket !!

LEMtheoriginal · 22/10/2018 00:09

What was it with barbie?

PickAChew · 22/10/2018 00:13

The boobs, LEM.

Redbrook · 22/10/2018 00:34

I am a child if the sixtes, but we quite “early adopters” compared to many so we had :
Central heating (but was solid fuel, ie coal, fired which meant filling the boiler with coal every day when my friends had gas)
A phone (but was a party line for years)
A colour TV (but was a tiny rented screen for years and years )
A shower (but was in the cellar !)
Duvets (but they were called Continental Quilts)
A car (which was actually a van from my dads works, which meant I had to STAND next to the front seat)
Holidays (at a caravan owned by friend of my Grandma)

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/10/2018 00:35

Leg warmers!

I wanted them so badly, but my mother thought they were beyond.

She was a knitter as well, so it wasn't even as if they would've cost anything.

SymphonyofShadows · 22/10/2018 00:38

Heating. We had a gas fire in the 'sitting room', but that was it. I remember ice on the inside of the metal framed windows in winter.

We also weirdly had a gas run fridge Confused

Snitzelvoncrumb · 22/10/2018 00:41

More than one outfit.

safariboot · 22/10/2018 00:42

Never had friends round. Well, almost never. The house was messy and DM was a bit embarrassed yet. I didn't really care tbh, I'm kind of introverted, it's just one of those quirks of my childhood.

Also never had a dad but I don't give a shit about that. He dumped my mum when she was pregnant with me.

converseandjeans · 22/10/2018 00:45

Heating that was 'on' - Dad claimed we couldn't afford it
Soda Stream
Mr Frosty

Flashingbeacon · 22/10/2018 00:51

Me and DH have to have this conversation a lot because I realised we were being ridiculous with ds.
DH didn’t have much of anything growing up and we certainly had more money but I never got what I wanted. So Ds has, Nike air max, a soda stream, every flipping transformer, proper Halloween costumes, everything with his name on and basically every faddy thing that comes out.
We’ve got a grip of it now but I still don’t know why I would deny him something without solid reasons. I don’t allow toy weapons but ds knows that and if he wants a police set with a gun or a plastic sword we usually find a work around.
Basically I live my childhood through him and it’s great.

agarrotterofspiders · 22/10/2018 00:56

I can second Mr Frosty not being that great. If I used it more than twice I'd be surprised. I also had a Mr Fruity (anyone remember?) which I think was in the shape of an orange tree, it made cordial-type drinks with powder. Confused

I wanted a Jem doll, a Boy George doll and a puff ball skirt (vair fashionable don't you know). My best friend received them all but I didn't. I liked Sindy and Barbie equally, and had both, until my firends and I decided that Sindy's head was somewhat out of proportion and Barbie then became the favourite.

agarrotterofspiders · 22/10/2018 00:57

*friends

agarrotterofspiders · 22/10/2018 00:58

I still have my Active Sindy ballerina, though! Still adore it.

agarrotterofspiders · 22/10/2018 01:03

Mr Fruity. I think it came after Frosty?

What did you not have growing up?
Curlygirly · 22/10/2018 01:03

Sticker books until I asked my friend to get me one for my birthday and she did. It was The Muppet one. Remember it so well.

Nat6999 · 22/10/2018 01:07

A Sindy car, had to make do with my little brother's Action Man motorbike & side car.
A Sindy caravan
A Sindy horse
A pet, my mum didn't like animals, as soon as DS was old enough he got bought a hamster & a rabbit
We didn't get a vcr until I was 20
To go abroad for a holiday, the first time I went on a plane was to Jersey when I was 20.
That Cadbury slot machine that dispensed tiny 1 chunk bars of dairy milk
A Spirograph, I still want one now.

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/10/2018 01:13

Father
Indoor plumbing (save for one cold tap)
Central heating
A bed.(not until I was about 7 years old. Slept on the sofa)
Plaster on the wall (single brick walls, no insulation so if the pointing came out you could see outside)

MumGoneCrazy · 22/10/2018 01:23

Mr frosty... was bought one for my 18th birthday by a friend after a conversation about childhood toys we wanted but never got. Spent the night drinking vodka slushies Grin

woooOooOOoollytights · 22/10/2018 04:54

Beginning to think I'm the only fucker alive who owned a mr frosty.

We're only about 3 of the things ever manufactured or something? Is mr frosty actually just an urban myth and I'm just imagining having had one?
