Anyone reading? I've got it as an audiobook-and I'm enjoying it so far. So worried Matthew's going to end up dead this time......

Bought it thursday....poor the Matthew with his gippy back. Tamasin has become quite a different keetle of fish.
It all feels very complicated but there is still that sense of time and place that I have loved so much in the other books.
Remind me...is the CJ Sansom ill? Did i hear that correctly

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 21/10/2018 16:54

I'm reading,! Willing Matthew to be careful. I will be so upset if he ends up in the tower again. Richard Rich has it in for him. I just love this series and was so pleased to see a new release. Beautiful writing.

Knittedfairies · 21/10/2018 16:55

Me too! I think it took a while to get going though...

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 21/10/2018 17:08

Believe CJ Sansom had cancer. This book written since this was announced so hope he is recovering.

HemanOrSheRa · 21/10/2018 17:17

Yep. I got stuck in on Friday night. Beautifully written as per usual. I think there will be sadness with Guy.

Also, I love the name Aymeric Copuldyke. But I'm not sure about the character yet.

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2018 17:18

I haven't got very far-loved the bit where he went to St Paul's to hear the first Mass in English. It must have been a real shock to the system-even for an agnostic like Matthew.

Yes, I love Guy. But if he can't cure himself he's a goner, isn't he? Sad

HemanOrSheRa · 21/10/2018 17:30

I like Guy. I was actually thinking I must go back and reread (again!) the series from the beginning.

It looks like CJ Sansom is doing a book tour or at least discussion nights. So I hope he is feeling well Smile.

workshyfop · 21/10/2018 17:34

I’ve just started it. It’s been a long wait for this one. I didn’t realise it would be the last one Sad

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 21/10/2018 18:05

Apologies if I've missed it but who says it is the last? I will be truly bereft if this is so.

TinselAngel · 21/10/2018 18:05

I've just started it. Is it definitely the last one?

lolaflores · 21/10/2018 18:18

It weighs a ton though
I have to read it balanced on a pillow on my tummy. Give myself regular breaks too. Anyone got any suggestions for similar writers?

TinselAngel · 21/10/2018 18:25

Yes I'm finding it really heavy! Too heavy to read in the bath, which is a pain.

Have you read any Ken Follet?

HemanOrSheRa · 21/10/2018 18:31

I got my copy delivered to my kindle as I can't do weighty books.

Yes, I did read somewhere that this is the last Shardlake book. It was ages ago though and I can't remember where I read it.

lolaflores · 21/10/2018 18:52

I.loved Pillars of the earth as it goes. I loved the butchers daughter by someone who u can't remember and it covers the dissolution as well and is wonderful. Didn't want it to end.
I loved Wolfhall too. Is there another book by Mantel coming to cover Cromwell downfall?
Loved Restoration by Bernice Ribena (am I right?)
Historical fiction always makes .e happy and is perfect for this time of year in my mind.
Love Philip kerr too and was so sad whenbi heard he died.

lolaflores · 21/10/2018 18:53

BERNICE RUBEN NOT FECKI ING RIBENA

Knittedfairies · 21/10/2018 21:30

Bernice Ribena! Love it.

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2018 21:37

I thought the author allounced it as the last-I do hope I'm wrong.
I'm listening to it as an audio book, which solves the heaviness problem!

Am starting from the beginning again, as I have some of them on the Kindle now...I have them all bar Tombland in physical form as well.

Can recommend Dorothy Dunnet, both the Lymond Chronicles and the Niccolo books for absorbing plots and great history.

BertrandRussell · 23/10/2018 09:11

Blimey-it's a bit swearier than the others, isn't it??

OP posts:
littlepeas · 23/10/2018 09:16

Is it the last one?? Shock I thought Lamentation was crap compared to the others, but still going to give this one a go - it’s on the shelf! Might have to fight dh for it - we’re both halfway through something else, so a race to Shardlake!

ifyoulikepinacolada · 23/10/2018 09:52

I’ve finished it already Blush

treaclesoda · 23/10/2018 09:55

I can't wait to read this but I'm a bit too tight fisted to pay the price of a newly released book. Blush

BertrandRussell · 23/10/2018 13:05

Somebody just got called a spunk stain!

OP posts:
JasperRising · 23/10/2018 13:31

My people! I have got my copy (when Amazon finally designed to deliver it to me) but dc is hampering my attempts to read it especially as it is to big to be a breastfeeding book... I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan of Lamentation either but I'm willing to give this a go. Fingers crossed. Books 1 and 3 are still my favourite.

Last I heard Hilary Mantel was trying to work out how to tell the story of Cromwell's downfall (I can kind of see the trouble - to be honest it is a bit dull and weighed down with European religious politics compared with some of the rest of his career).

I've been reading Robyn Young recently - two recent books are set in early Henry VIII reign time period. Also have Tracey Borman The King's Witch on the to read pile.
