Anyone reading? I've got it as an audiobook-and I'm enjoying it so far. So worried Matthew's going to end up dead this time......

I thought it a bit swearier too. I ‘see’ Barak as Oliver Reed in his swashbuckling days, and Guy is a bit Gandalf-ish in my head.

treaclesoda · 23/10/2018 13:41

Someone years ago on mumsnet said they visualised Barak as looking like Aidan Turner. I didn't know who he was at that stage so I googled him and I thought he marched the description really well.

treaclesoda · 23/10/2018 13:41

Matched Hmm

JasperRising · 23/10/2018 13:48

I've always visualised Barack as scrawny and wiry - can't think of an actor I would tie him to though!

Knittedfairies · 23/10/2018 18:36

I saw someone leave WH Smith in Nottingham clutching a copy today, and wondered whether she was a MNer..

FekkoTheLawyer · 23/10/2018 18:40

Who said it was the last? And no spoilers for those who have finished the book!

BertrandRussell · 23/10/2018 19:43

Sansom is talking about Tombland on Front Row at the moment.......”

Damn - missed it!

FayKnights · 23/10/2018 20:02

Gods teeth, I love these books! Can’t wait to start Tombland!

Dermymc · 01/11/2018 23:10

Anyone finished this?

TinselAngel · 01/11/2018 23:17

I'm 3/4's through.

longwayoff · 02/11/2018 07:07

Love this series, not read full thread in case spoilers, but am recommending "An instance of the fingerpost", Iain Pears, to Sansom fans. Restoration, not Tudor, but a remarkable book that wont disappoint, very atmospheric. So looking forward to Shardlake at Christmas.

FekkoThePenguin · 02/11/2018 07:32

1/2 way and a bit...

liviadrusilla · 02/11/2018 07:45

Half way through and really enjoying, though getting some of the characters muddled. There's a lot of people 'baring their arses' at others!

FekkoThePenguin · 02/11/2018 07:50

God, the book is too heavy to read in bed! I think Guy will croak it.

Dermymc · 02/11/2018 08:04

I'm finished but won't spoil it! Luckily I went for the kindle version so bed reading was OK.

Anyone read the essay at the end? I haven't yet but will.

😂 At all the arse bearing. Also a lot of cunts being discussed.

LittleCandle · 02/11/2018 08:09

I started it last week, but haven't got very far. I do find it heavy, but that's the same with all hardbacks. I pre-ordered mine from Waterstones, and got it for £10. I hope it isn't the last book...

Bowchicawowow · 02/11/2018 08:10

DP is reading it at the moment. He says it’s heartbreaking in its’ depiction of poverty.

LeavingTheSandBehind · 02/11/2018 14:01

I'm on a self-imposed book buying ban until Christmas as I have so many to read so this is on my Christmas wish list! Can't wait :)

agedknees · 02/11/2018 15:08

For people asking for similar, try the Matthew Cordwaier mystery’s by Joyce Lionarons. It’s set in earlier times 12c, but are good reads.

I love Shardlake.

longwayoff · 03/11/2018 08:19

Thanks aged, have bought book 1 on kindle. Looking forward to it.

Shivermetimbers0112 · 03/11/2018 11:37

Loved it. Was like spending time with old friends, with added intestines. Really hope there’s more to come.

TinselAngel · 04/11/2018 21:45

God's death! I finally finished it.

Clawdy · 04/11/2018 22:53

Just finished it! Enjoyed it, but felt the interesting murder mystery got a bit lost in the endless chapters about the rebellion. Agree about the swearing, it was actually quite funny!

gnushoes · 04/11/2018 23:11

Have also finished it - loved it but the murder mystery got rather waylaid by the (really interesting) history - and as usual wondering how the hell Matthew was going to get out of his plight. The essay at the end is a good read.
Love Shardlake and I really hope there are more.
Think the author is rather less expert on baby development than Tudor history however - Josephine's child is curiously advanced at six months!
