Toddlers wellies.

Please can I have some help with the rather boring topic of toddler wellies. We've had yet another walk where the wellies split part the way round and there's tears and emergency sandwich bags and then have to be really careful rest of the way whilst they whinge.

We've tried John Lewis, rydale, next, joules and I'm losing faith. They all last about 2 months.

My two are 3.5 and hard on their stuff so waterproof walking boots would be better but as they're tiny with size 7 feet none are small enough.

Are bogs worth it? Or more like snow boots? But then do they get really hot on warmer days like today. As I've got 2 everything is double the cost and doubly galling if I waste a lot of money on crap.

We tried everything and eventually settled on crocs wellies. Made in one piece so no seams and very lightweight. Only ones she’ll wear now

SharkSave · 21/10/2018 15:50

I was going to suggest bogs! Worth every penny imo. My DC wore them all last winter and you can hardly tell, really hardwearing and warm. We paid £40 for a new pair a few weeks ago, when you compare that to the price of joules wellies for example it's not much more, especially if you aren't replacing them twice a winter

Muddlingalongalone · 21/10/2018 15:54

I know it sounds ridiculous given the brands you have already tried but I swear by sports direct. Have never had a pair split unlike mothercare/supermarkets etc.

I think you're right about the 1 piece thing, as most of ours have split where the sole meets the upper.

Has anyone tried these?

Are they wearing them an awful lot? I always felt wellies weren’t great for their feet unless it’s absolutely essential. For just mud we just got plastic trainer type things like this

SpanielPlusToddler · 21/10/2018 16:17

I’d second crocs wellies. Mine wear them a lot and have never split, in fact mine have handed them down to younger sibling.

WinkysTeatowel · 21/10/2018 16:19

We've had 2 pairs (different sizes) of the ones you linked and I really like them. Nice and light like Crocs but come with a sheepskin liner. Would recommend and will be buying again when our DD has outgrown her current pair.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 16:30

I agree biscuit but I like to take them out walking 2-3 times a week and I can't bear the climbing rocks and jumping in mud etc in their decent shoes. We've a stream just over the road from our house and they love paddling in it.

I thought maybe if I bought decent ones they'd be better for their feet and last longer. I really would like walking boots but they don't seem to start until size 10

For just climbing and getting muddy, why not just get something like this?

MsNowtyBach · 21/10/2018 16:46

Naturino Rainstep are amazing, keep feet warm and wet out. Good snow boots, but not too clumpy.

Sashkin · 21/10/2018 16:48

Don't get snow boots - they are really warm and heavy and you really don’t need them for UK autumn weather. They are also much less waterproof than wellies IME.

Bogs are great but I find them hard to get over trousers. DS usually wears joggers though, might be easier if your girls wear leggings or tights. We have used Jojo wellies but I actually find Dunlops (super-cheap, from my mum’s local horse/farming supply shop) have been the best.

kaytee87 · 21/10/2018 16:51

Either Clark's or Jojo mama do a pair of waterproof warm boots

catsofa · 21/10/2018 16:55

I've had a few nice gore tex pairs in sizes 7 and 8 second hand off ebay, they do exist!

Wanttomakemincepies · 21/10/2018 16:56

Have a look at muddy puddles. I have the drawstring ones. Cosy and have lasted.

ChiantiAndTruffles · 21/10/2018 17:00

Aldi or Lidl wellies and outdoor stuff are fab for kids. Especially the wellies with handles.

Juanbablo · 21/10/2018 17:01

Crocs wellies lasted really well. John Lewis have been good too but I see you say they have split. How about Hatley?

SpottingTheZebras · 21/10/2018 17:02

Jojo’s wellies have always lasted the duration for my children and been waterproof. Can also recommend Mountain Warehouse.

Orlandointhewilderness · 21/10/2018 17:22

Dd has always been in hunters. You can usually find some on eBay ( and resell afterwards!) and we've never had any split

Caroian · 21/10/2018 17:25

we've always found Bergstein wellies good

anniehm · 21/10/2018 17:32

You can get very small hiking boots, definitely at size 4 (my DD's had minute feet, still do) we bought in USA though

anniehm · 21/10/2018 17:35

Just looked and sports direct have hiking boots from size 5

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 17:50

Ah guys thank you so much, I am going to buy some walking boots and wellies. Have you tried those ones biscuit? They are a bargain.

I had looked at a couple of outdoor shops and they didn't do anything smaller that a 10, so pleased to be proved wrong.

Now to convince my two that not all outdoor shoes need to be dinosaur/flamingo/other toddler themed design.

Thanks again

orlando you may be part of the eBay chain I used to take part in!
I kept DS's first pair of Hunters and bought the second ones on eBay- think I paid around £15 for them. When he outgrew them I whacked them back on and got around £15 back, which I bought his next pair with. This went on for around 8 years Grin

Holymosquito · 21/10/2018 17:56

www.warmwellies.co.uk/toddler-wellies-sizes-6-8/

these ones are amazing. DS can put them on all by himself, they ar sodt enought that he can run and climb steps without tripping. No extra socks to wrinkle down and find and feet as warm as toast.

only problem is getting him to take them off!

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 18:39

Ok so I'm prob just being rubbish but I cannot find any hiking boots in their size except the decathlon ones which aren't waterproof.

Hmm, back to wellies I think. I'll be googling all the ones suggested, but think I might try some with a draw string so when it's raining it doesn't run down the waterproof trousers and into their wellies.

Love how you can post something so mundane on Mumsnet and get so much help. Thanks everyone
