Toddlers wellies.

Please can I have some help with the rather boring topic of toddler wellies. We've had yet another walk where the wellies split part the way round and there's tears and emergency sandwich bags and then have to be really careful rest of the way whilst they whinge.

We've tried John Lewis, rydale, next, joules and I'm losing faith. They all last about 2 months.

My two are 3.5 and hard on their stuff so waterproof walking boots would be better but as they're tiny with size 7 feet none are small enough.

Are bogs worth it? Or more like snow boots? But then do they get really hot on warmer days like today. As I've got 2 everything is double the cost and doubly galling if I waste a lot of money on crap.

Or if their proper shoes are waterproof-ish and would do for muddy woods, maybe get a cheaper smart pair for if you want them to be more presentable.

kaytee87 · 21/10/2018 19:04

I've just ordered these for my 2yo and 3.5yo nephew. We're in Scotland though so it will definitely be cold enough for them for at least a couple of months

Those JoJo snow boots are great for walking but no use for splashing in streams- even puddle jumping resulted in wet feet.

Sainsbury's Gruffalo wellies survived my DD who often spent 4 months in a shoe size, unlike others tried. She's gone into 7.5.

InvisibleToEveryone · 21/10/2018 19:17

I've always put waterproof trousers over the wellies, rather in the wellies.

Meant water didn't go inside the boots.

KarrisWhiteOak · 21/10/2018 19:20

My dad lives in wellies esp at forest school. Ours have all come from Sainsbury’s expect the one pair to spilt at Seams which was primark after a month. Not getting any from them again

lpchill · 21/10/2018 19:21

We got the shoe zone wellies and they have been great. Last year our almost two year old we got winter boots for the cold months, they where great but too hot. This ear for our almost three year old we have brought some walking boots and wellies. Wellies for short jaunts in puddles and the walking boots for long walks with the dog. The walking boots have been great. Waterproof, sturdy and supports the foot much better

Kool4katz · 21/10/2018 19:22

I just tend to buy the ones sold in farm supplies stores. Dunlop etc.

AimingToMisbehave · 21/10/2018 19:22

The demar ones you linked on Amazon are fabulous OP. DS had about 18months when his feet only grew one size and he had a pair of those for the whole time and they were still pristine when he finally outgrew them. We do a lot of fell walking and I estimate he must have walked over 100 miles in them. I only buy those wellies now for both the kids.

coffeeneeded · 21/10/2018 19:24

I second muddy puddles. Quality stuff!

kaytee87 · 21/10/2018 19:27

@TuckMyWin hmmm that's annoying. It says they're completely waterproof. There is another similar pair that aren't waterproof though

TuckMyWin · 21/10/2018 20:05

@kaytee87 it's possible I had the similar pair.

kaytee87 · 21/10/2018 20:37

I've just looked again and the upper is only water resistant

He has water proof trousers etc so I'm sure it will be ok. His feet were freezing in wellies last winter, even with 2 pairs of socks.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 20:55

Ipchill where did you buy the walking boots?

Ok it's looking like I'll try the ones from amazon for her (he's still got some next ones I got last week) and see how we go. And maybe some snow boots as the temperature drops.

Kamiks are great, but again probably wouldn’t stand up to standing in streams. The rubber part will be waterproof, but there is a tongue in the upper part and if they are totally submerged I think you will get water coming in. I wouldn’t stand in a stream in ANY snow boots - that’s not what they are made for (the Bogs might be ok because the uppers are all one piece, but I personally wouldn’t risk it). Snow just doesn’t penetrate through seams and folds in the same way that water does.

lpchill · 22/10/2018 05:34

Got the walking boots from sports direct. Amazon sell them too

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 22/10/2018 11:14

I cannot find anywhere that does walking boots in size 24 or 25, everywhere I've looked (go outdoors, decathlon, millets, mountain warehouse, even brands like north face (usually one to capitalise on a sales opportunity) and they don't do under a size 10 for waterproof walking boots.

Is this a missed sales opportunity? Probably not, it's just my kids have minuscule feet. They've only grown 3 sizes in 2 years.

We have got snow boots from last year which were great in snow/cold weather but I don't think they'll do for paddling etc and they're a bugger to clean and dry

Tartanwallpaper · 22/10/2018 11:29

We had the same problem with finding walking boots. My seven year old is too small for the first size proper walking boot anywhere. Definitely a gap in the market

librarylover53 · 22/10/2018 12:10

I liked our crocs but they didn't come up high enough on the leg...,

Now have startrite mud busters and they're fab, especially for this time of year as they're fleece lined.

Notso · 22/10/2018 12:25

Mine are in good old fashioned Dunlop green wellies.
We've tried so many other brands from Hunters to Primark and they are all either too low or have split.
It's only been a couple of months but so far so good. I'm pretty confident they'll be hard wearing though. I help run forest school sessions and we have loads of spare wellies donated. The green ones seem to just last and last.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 22/10/2018 12:58

Ok it looks like Dunlop might be a goer if the Delmar turn out to be rubbish. And I once saw Steve lamacq in a pair at a festival so that's got to be an endorsement!

I do think a lot of toddler wellies are too short, like mid calf and have really wide openings. I guess that makes it easier to get them on independently but it does mean they fill with all manner of water and mud and snacks.

If I was at all creative I'd use this to decide the perfect grippy boot/walking boot combo.

lekkerkroketje · 22/10/2018 17:05

I tried putting it in in French and German to see if you get a different selection. I think these (or same in a different colour) might fit, but they're still probably not stream proof. A bit tougher and more supportive though

coffeeneeded · 22/10/2018 17:38

www.muddypuddles.com/snowboots/snowdrift-snowboots-blue/

Try these. My 2 1/2 year olds have them and the removable, thermal liners are really useful and good!!

They've been in the sea already this year and still look brand new.

BingerGeer · 22/10/2018 17:55

My tiny footed dd used these waterproof Plae boots: www.goplae.co.uk/boots/noel-raven-red-w.html which start at a size 22 last year for muddy walks and stream paddling. Light, flexible, machine washable - and the only time she got wet feet was when she went innover the top of them.
