Anyone have open wardrobes, ie/ without doors??

Off to Ikea tomorrow (mad on a Sunday, I know) to order some Pax wardrobes. DH is keen to have the open ones, without doors but I'm worried everything will just get dusty?

Does anyone have open ones and would you recommend?

Divorce your husband and buy the doors. Open wardrobes will make your bedroom look really messy. I’d only consider them if they were in a separate dressing room .

Knittedfairies · 20/10/2018 19:25

Unless you have everything in your wardrobes hung beautifully, shoes neatly lined up and everything on the shelves folded to perfection, you’ll need doors to hide it all. Dust may well be a problem too

Oh God no. Isn't half the point of having wardrobes to hide the clutter. You need doors. I think it would drive you nuts having no doors.

minniemoll · 20/10/2018 19:26

I have, but I have a separate dressing room. I wouldn't have open wardrobes in my bedroom.

Dermymc · 20/10/2018 19:26

I had one once in a rented house. They are a nightmare, everything gets dusty. Like everything. And your room permanently looks a mess.

HannahnotAgnes · 20/10/2018 19:27

I agree with Kr1

Daisymay2 · 20/10/2018 19:32

Not sure if this is helpful, our house was built with walk in wardrobe in the eves. It is quite low so pax would not fit. I puzzled for ages what to do and ended up with the pine slatted wardrobes which have a canvas covering similar to the ones that you can get from Argos. I have 2 at right angles to each other. I leave the front flaps open all the time. The clothes don't get dusty but they are within a walk in cupboard.
I am not sure I would want the PAX wardrobe without doors.

betweenhillsandsea · 20/10/2018 19:33

I have them, but there are in a dressing room/bathroom area.... be warned, if there is a window, one arm of most of my jackets is sun bleached Angry

DianaBlythe · 20/10/2018 19:37

If you look at the ones in ikea they have very few items in and usually it’s something like 3 identical dresses and some matching shoes so in the shop it looks very tasteful!

Unless you have a very minimalist matchy matchy collection of clothes I’d avoid!

Kr1stina · 20/10/2018 19:38

And while I’m here, these are my Pax tips

  1. The interior fittings can be very expensive. If you are on a budget stick to shelves, rails and baskets .
  1. Get the tall ones if you have space.
  1. I like to hang clothes ( too lazy to fold neatly ) so I go for two hanging rails on one side and a high up shelf . On this high shelf I put one of the zip up storage boxes with all my out of season clothes . On the other side I’d put a high rail ( if you have a lot of dresses or long clothes ) or some baskets ( if you don’t have other shelf space in the bedroom ).
  1. The mirrored door are not high style but they really open up a small or dark room
Cachailleacha · 20/10/2018 19:43

I have a valet stand from Ikea instead of a wardrobe, just took out the middle rail. I have a black winter coat that I haven't worn since last winter and it is only a little dusty on the shoulders. My bedroom does not look a mess, I do keep surfaces clear of all but a couple of essentials, which may balance it out.

acatcalledron · 20/10/2018 19:58

I have a built in wardrobe that does not have doors, I personally think it looks great. I have a "capsule" wardrobe so not a lot of clothes to organise and the colours are all pretty similar.
My clothes don't get dusty but my shoes do even though I hoover regularly

CastleFeck · 20/10/2018 20:33

Haven’t the pax got all the pre drilled holes inside as well so you’ll see those.

claptomania · 21/10/2018 08:07

Not good as would encourage dust and moths

AdventuringThroughLife · 21/10/2018 08:10

We have a wall of pax with some with doors and some open. Shelves with jumpers and baskets with random stuff and a shelf of books (!) Are open. Then the ones with doors hide the hung stuff (normal height and a half height one.)

Thenewdoctor · 21/10/2018 08:10

I wouldn’t. Because I am messy and it would look shit.

I hang stuff up but it is all higgeldy and not organised by colour or size and would look crap if my doors were open.

And my high shelves where my duvet and spare shit lives are never immaculate folded perfection.

TheProvincialLady · 21/10/2018 08:31

I can’t see any advantage in not having doors. A dusty mess or a constant job keeping it looking tidy vs....some doors. What does your DH think is the benefit of having no doors?

Snowglobes · 21/10/2018 08:39

@Kr1stina
I’m thinking if getting the pax wardrobes with mirrored doors. I’m wondering if you have them & if you’d mind posting a photo please? All the photos I see are of the regular doors . Huge thanks!

astoundedgoat · 21/10/2018 08:41

We had open wardrobes in our last flat (hipster "loft" rails from John Lewis) and actually it was fine. Huge impetus AGAINST clutter & hanging onto downright ugly clothes, everything was perfectly neat all the time because it HAD to be. Could stay moth free more easily.

But - dust. The tops of clothes not on heavy rotation got dusty and that was annoying.

Cachailleacha · 21/10/2018 09:01

I can’t see any advantage in not having doors.
Like astoundedgoat said, an important benefit is that it discourages clutter and hoarding.

Thenewdoctor · 21/10/2018 09:04

But I don’t iron clothes before I hang them up. And they don’t match colour wise. It would look untidy

dudsville · 21/10/2018 09:07

I was really tempte to go doorless to make better use of the small space. Builder and oh convinced me otherwise and I'm so glad. Fwiw my wardrobes are holding neatly organised things, but we were also having integrated sets of drawers and the finished product makes much more sense with doors. It's a reach to get into the back corners of the wardrobes but it's doable and we just keep out of season things there. If you like the look of open or see through cupboards in the kitchen or bathroom then you may prefer doorless.

Cachailleacha · 21/10/2018 09:09

ftfoawygtfosm I only iron school shirts that I have had to soak. Our rails do not look untidy.

Thenewdoctor · 21/10/2018 09:11

Cacha I wouldn’t be able to hang stuff by use as I do now.

I’d have to hang by colours and length.

I know I’m weird 😀
