Walk with toddlers Yorkshire

Random and rather specific request from the hive mind...

As a family we've had a pretty shitty week and we'd really like a walk in beautiful autumn countryside. We live in West Yorkshire and we were planning to head up to the lakes but the weather is looking crappy for the north ruling out lakes/dales.

We've got 2 toddlers who love a little scramble up some rocks, but we have toddler back carriers and fancy a bit of a proper walk.

Can anyone help us out with a suggestion with somewhere south/west yorks within 1.5 hours of Leeds ish? About 5-8 miles. If it also has a nice pub doing a Sunday roast there will be extra virtual internet points.

Thanks guys.

Newmillerdam?

whiteroseredrose · 20/10/2018 17:06

Dovestone reservoir? You can walk round it. There's a beach area and also a bit with big boulders for scrambling on not far from the car park

almightygirl · 20/10/2018 17:10

What about Mallam? Beautiful walk, bit of scrambling possible for your toddlers in parts. Think the round trip to the top and back again was about 8/9 miles.

Yorkshire sculpture park? Lots of nice pubs in the area.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 20/10/2018 17:12

Now I remember a few people have suggested Newmillerdam before, and I'm very intrigued by dovestones since the Neil dovestone thing. Nice work, Thankyou

Yes we were considering ysp as we love it, but think I wanted something quieter as I'm feeling very introverted (or maybe just grumpy) at the moment.

Might be a bit too far south, but there's a Room in the Broom walk at Anglers Country Park. My two (aged 4 & 3) love it. There's also a great playground and cafe. It's close to Newmillerdam.

Hardcastle Crags in Hebden Bridge? There are lots of nice pubs around there and plenty of rocks for scrambling.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 20/10/2018 17:15

Sorry missed mallam, excellent idea but the rain hits there quite early and as we're in the middle of potty training hell we need it to be dryish to keep hailing them out of the back pack to tempt them to wee outside their underwear.

Hardcastle Crags looks a good contender, can you recommend a good pub nearby or fairly easy to find?

My favourite pub round there is the Stubbing Wharf which is on the canal in Hebden Bridge, or the Shoulder of Mutton in Mytholmroyd. There's lots of lovely shops and cafes in Hebden Bridge itself and the best pizza I've ever had at Marco's in the town.

GemmaB78 · 20/10/2018 17:44

Would Dalby Forest be a bit too far?I know you said South or West, but it is lovely! Or Wharram Percy/Thixendale.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 20/10/2018 18:43

I haven't been to Dalby since we had the kids (used to enjoy the mb trails) but I think it'll be too far north and too far so we'll end up walking rain, but deffo contender for another time.

Is Helmsley-Cleveland Way too far?

Brinham rocks are lovely for another time, they are quite touristy so not suitable on this occasion I suspect.

SergeantPfeffer · 20/10/2018 19:17

I second hardcastle crags. Beautiful there on a crisp autumn day. There is a small national trust cafe at the mill there too.

SergeantPfeffer · 20/10/2018 19:20

Another place is ilkley moor, which I like because there are lots of short and long walks up there. It’s quiet once you’re away from the cow and calf. Pubs are the cow and calf, dick hudsons on the bingley side, ther hermit near burley or a trip into ilkley for the Wheatley arms.

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2018 19:22

Cow and Calf rocks? We loved that when ours were little.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 20/10/2018 19:54

Brimham rocks is fab but yes too far north and busy for tomorrow.

Ilkley Moor is also beautiful but on our doorstep so we go frequently, and fancied somewhere further afield.

Thank you everyone for being so patient with my countryside Goldilocks.

Looking at Hardcastle Crags and dovestone but keep any more ideas coming, even if not for tomorrow I'm going to use this thread for future inspiration

Is Aysgarth too far?

Dowser · 20/10/2018 20:40

Brimham rocks...or a walk along Sutton bank Near Thirsk . You can watch the gliders, nice tourist centre with cafe...
Stunning views over N Yorks countryside
Can’t be that far from W Yorks is it?

Dowser · 20/10/2018 20:42

If you live in Leeds it is an hour
You can walk down to the white horse carved in the cliff

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 20/10/2018 20:47

Aysgarth/Sutton bank aren't too far but we're running from the rain in the opposite direction!

Deffo will add to the list for next time tho

I so want to go to Aysgarth today Sad

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/10/2018 07:09

Brimham rocks? Hardscastle crags? How steen gorge?

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2018 09:43

It's a beautiful day here and I'm sitting in an Aldi car park waiting for it to open, before going back to a day of dull indoor tasks and people are talking about Mallam and Aysgarth and Brigham-I feel very sad. Sad When you come back, OP can you post a picture?
