Walk with toddlers Yorkshire

Random and rather specific request from the hive mind...

As a family we've had a pretty shitty week and we'd really like a walk in beautiful autumn countryside. We live in West Yorkshire and we were planning to head up to the lakes but the weather is looking crappy for the north ruling out lakes/dales.

We've got 2 toddlers who love a little scramble up some rocks, but we have toddler back carriers and fancy a bit of a proper walk.

Can anyone help us out with a suggestion with somewhere south/west yorks within 1.5 hours of Leeds ish? About 5-8 miles. If it also has a nice pub doing a Sunday roast there will be extra virtual internet points.

Thanks guys.

Think we’re headed to the moor. Meant to go further afield but it’s just so easy! Thought of a few places in the Dales for future reference:
Bolton abbey
Walking from burnsall to grassington along the river
Trollers ghyll from Parcival Hall
Grass woods
The old lime mines near grassington
Beamsley beacon
Simons seat

Bit late for today, but you can park in the Cross Keys pub car park in Uppermill, Saddleworth. Walk up running hill gate, along the ridge to pots and pans, along to alderman's head (above dovestones) then loop back down and along gellfield lane for a lovely lunch back at the pub. About 5 miles, with stunning views all the way to Wales. Hope you enjoyed your walk today.

I know it’s late in the day, but to another idea, Langsett Reservoir. There’s an OK pub (Waggon and Horses) and excellent walkers/cyclists/truckers cafe in the village.

Fabulous walk up to the crags and across Shackleton knoll. I can't believe I've never been to Hardcastle Crags it's a perfect natural playground.

That Uppermill route looks fab so I've definitely book marked that for another day, a long with lots of the other suggestions. Makes me very grateful for our gorgeous local countryside.

Now to start a thread about wellies, my 2 seem to be going through them every 2 months and we've had yet another walk where one of them has ended with feet in sandwich bags as they split on the walk. Grr

Was about to say Newmillerdam but beaten to it! Lovely there, and definitely not too far away.
Or there's LadyBower resevoir?
The Peak District is lovely and really near to West Yorkshire too.

We do live in a lovely part of the country Smile

Otley Chevin

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 19:15

Otley chevin is on our doorstep and a regular favourite, the views are fab.

We never go to the Peak District, probably because we're always in the lakes and dales and don't know any good campervan spots south.

I'm going to make more of an effort to head south

Love the chevin. Peak District for us is a good 1-1.5 hrs away so tend to go for the dales which are much closer. I keep meaning to go up to the north York moors for a weekend so we can properly explore.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 21:00

We have done a few weekends to the ny moors but not enough.

We also haven't been up to the NE much since we had the kids, so we need to do some more exploring.

It's a shame how Work gets in the way of all the fun!

Roseberry Topping (maybe more of s weekend trip).
Bolton Abbey
Ingleton

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 21/10/2018 21:11

We're going to Bolton abbey next weekend to try the pumpkin walk and combine it with Simons seat.

Im googling roseberry topping, it's one of those I hear mentioned a lot but I've never been.

Roseberry Topping is a lovely walk, although very steep near the top. There are several ways to do it, depending on how far you want to walk.

I think this is the short version, although you can start from Great Ayton, which is a lovely nearby village and/or take in the Captain Cooks Monument to extend to a few miles.

Easily doable as a day trip from the West Yorkshire area. I'm happy to drive about an hour to an hour and a quarter for a 'proper' walking day out so from Leeds, this takes in many areas of the Dales, Peak District and North York Moors, and while the latter is a little further away, motorway/fast road access most of the way makes journey times about the same.
