seemed lovely but looking back makes you cringe? I remember putting a peach carpet on my bathroom floor in my first flat and loving it and now think OMG!!😂😂

There was a BBC programme a couple of decades back called Signs of the Times, where people showed off their homes and spoke about why they had decorated them in that style. I do recommend it!

NormaLouiseBates · 22/10/2018 08:49

I remember terracotta coloured anything being a big thing in the late 90s. We had a massive chunky terracotta coloured leather 3 piece suite; to be fair it was super comfortable and lasted for years and years!

Anyone remember those furniture decorating kits you could get? You painted one colour on, then once it was dry you painted a lighted colour and used a weird tool thing to create a wood grain effect? Hmm Nothing wood was safe in my house in those days.

OutPinked · 22/10/2018 09:54

Textured walls are an absolute NIGHTMARE. We have just bought a house and aside from the modern kitchen, the rest has very much been a ‘doer-upper’. Bought it from an elderly woman who had owned it since it was built. Her son was a decorator so he’d recently painted everywhere but all of upstairs had textured walls, our bedroom being the worst with the horror that is woodchip wallpaper Angry. I’m not kidding when I say it has taken us four weeks to finish decorating our bedroom primarily because that wallpaper took so long to strip and that was with a steamer! Horrible. I’d love to travel back in time to meet the person that invented it and strangle him.

AviatorShades · 22/10/2018 10:06

Norma was that technique of creating a wood grain effect with the comb thing called 'distressing'?
I thought that it was so apt Grin

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 22/10/2018 13:35

Dusty pink and light moss green.

They were everywhere in the eighties with 'Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady' style linens.

cjt110 · 22/10/2018 13:46

I remember a kitchen of my childhood being painted Yellow and Blue. Bright shades like in the corner of this photo... but think of it being extended to every wall and cupboard door available to paint.

My mum's kitchen is now lime green.

And her lounge is yellow.

And her bedroom is peach with a faux brick wallpaper feature wall.

It's a good job I love her because she's shit at decor....

I once spoilt a simple, but perfectly nice, IKEA pine folding dining table by painting it with the paint and varnish stuff which created a “crackle glaze” effect. I did an orange base with a cream coloured top coat (because one dining wall was painted orange). The varnish went on a bit too thick and over time the crackled “crevices” became rather grubby.

lynmilne65 · 22/10/2018 17:55

Gold/brass frightfully common

Bluntness100 · 22/10/2018 18:32

God this is bringing back memories, I did stencil ivy all the way up the stairs once.

I also now recall wallpaper borders. At the top of the walls, in horrible peach, yellow, and blue floral designs, 🤣

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/10/2018 19:34

I moved into a farm cottage many years ago and went Laura Ashley mad. I had the upper and lower wallpaper divided by a patterned dado which matched the border, which matched the curtains and pelmet, which matched the Austrian blinds, which matched the bedding. Kitchen and bedroom were pale blue and yellow and horror of horrors, living room was pink and green. I was terribly proud of it all but I suppose all those years ago it was quite the thing. 😂

Lucisky · 22/10/2018 19:59

As I bought my first place in 1983 I have had many years to practice multiple design errors/trends.
The dulux 'hint of...' paints had just come out. I painted my sitting room with a 'hint of apple'. It was just pale green and looked institutional. I also had the obligatory border, of which many were self adhesive, and therefore when you removed them the plaster would come off as well.
Anyone remember net cafe curtains? I had them on every window. They were flouncy with contrasting borders. They were all the rage. (Honestly!)
I also had bathroom carpet that went up the side of the bath. It was shag pile too. I thought it was very luxurious.
The Laura Ashley catalogue was my bible. I used to drool over the room designs and wish I could have the same.

Bananajam · 22/10/2018 20:05

I stencilled ivy up the stairs, I loved it! Along with red tulips with green curvy leaves up and around the fireplace Grin

In a different house the previous owner had been an obsessive art deco fan recreating a 20's look throughout, they had installed a dark green bathroom suite, original art deco with a cast iron bath. I loved the look, it was perfectly suited to the house, it took forever to fill but stayed hot for hours. We sold up having changed very little to the property and after a few years it went up for sale again with all the William Morris wallpaper removed, painted white with feature walls and the bathroom suite taken out and replaced with a white plastic suite - such a shame!

Justmuddlingalong · 22/10/2018 23:01

I had black ash furniture in my 1st flat. The dust was highlighted beautifully on it. 😬

mayhew · 23/10/2018 08:22

Kitchen islands will date to the mid noughties. Open plan and bifolds ditto.
And I really hate those super shiny tiles kitchen floors.

sdaisy26 · 23/10/2018 09:26

My PIL still have most of these things in their house. A green / terracotta / peach combo in almost every room.

cleanupinaisle7 · 23/10/2018 12:25

patterned carpets or the same colour but with a difference height of pile 'swirled ' into them!!

and a bar of soap. no one has bars of soap anymore do they!!

umpteennamechanges · 23/10/2018 12:38

Bars of soap are coming back in - most people I know are switching back to soap (to reduce plastic)....

Got a soap dish back in my bathroom....

nicebitofquiche · 23/10/2018 13:30

Anyone remember the little mdf circular occasional tables. Covered in a peach or green cloth with a lace cloth over it. Had one in my hall. Classy.

SciFiFan2015 · 23/10/2018 13:49

Most of my decorating choices are made with ease of cleaning in mind. Not fashion or style (don't think I have either!) so in the bathroom I have shower-board instead of tiles. Looks brand new after almost 10 years and no grout to clean! Furniture: minimal handles or decoration because that's where the dust catches.
Carpet picked to hide the high traffic areas.
And so on and so on.
All picked to keep the time spent on cleaning/maintenance/money/dusting etc etc to a minimum.

In fact I'm going to call it #lazychic

CartwheelCath · 23/10/2018 14:23

Oh god yes those met round tables!! Always with a lace or 2 tone frilly affair draped over the top!😂

As a child I was always very envious of a couple of my friends whose parents had indulged them in the tasteful and very much sought after Pierrot the clown bedroom decor. I thought my mother was terrible not even buying me the duvet cover but today I can thank her for that!! Anyone else remember this craze?

hmmwhatatodo · 23/10/2018 15:01

My next door neighbour had the cheap table , I was amazed when I saw what was under the tablecloth one day!

I really wanted the Pierrot bedroom.

Formica worktop anyone?

MsRinky · 23/10/2018 15:11

I'm looking at formica worktops for my new kitchen.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 23/10/2018 15:51

A local charity shop has a box of 5 piece bathroom set.

Toothbrush holder for four brushes. ✔

Little shelf with four holes and four tumblers. ✔

Toilet roll holder✔

Towel rail. ✔

Ashtray. 🤮

All in honey pine. 🤮🤮🤮

katienana · 23/10/2018 15:57

In my mum's house in the 90s we had Austrian blinds in a shiny silk effect fabric in bathrooms, landing, and in the kitchen. Floral wallpaper in the kitchen. A blue bathroom suite. One type of wallpaper on the bottom half of the wall and another above (most of the house had this including bedrooms). A room wasn't complete unless it had a border either half way up the wall or right at the top. We also had little straw hats filled with pot pourri hung up on the wall. I loved those!
