Anyone want to guess how much getting new windows will cost me?

Looking at moving house, and the house will need new windows. Obviously can’t get a company round until bought it, so just trying to guesstimate to add in costs of moving. It’s got 17 windows, one front door, one back door and a bifold door (currently 3parts).

Looking for either white or the grey frames, standard windows, nothing overly fancy pants.

Anyone got any rough guesses for me? To the nearest grand?

In 2014 we bought 13 windows, front door with side windows, back door with side bit of glass, had french doors with side windows knocked out and 3 part bifold door put in. We chose white, but with a very authentic wood grain effect. Cost £14000

Decent upcv sash windows for a terraced house are c.£1000 each.
Not so decent will be cheaper.
I don't know about different kinds of windows, whether they're generally cheaper or more expensive. It will depend on how many panes you need to open.

serbska · 17/10/2018 19:50

£20k

Hugely variable. I lived one place where the landlord was quoted £30k, ended up paying £9k, after a lot of digging I reckon it was achievable to diy for £2k. Get lots of quotes.

Momasita · 17/10/2018 19:55

Don't go for places like safe style they are awful, go local and try and negotiate good deal from small local person

VictoriaBun · 17/10/2018 19:57

Depends on window size, profile of the window, openings, quality etc. But like asking how long is a piece of strong ! Don't always assume the big boys will be the cheapest. It's worth getting a quote from your local independent.

civicxx · 17/10/2018 20:00

Avoid safestyle like the plague. They quoted my mum £25k, local company did it for £10k

Scotinoz · 17/10/2018 20:00

Id say about £18-£22k.

£3k for the bifold
£1.5k per external door
£750 per window

+/- for ironmongery, excessively big, coloured glass, complex windows.

And that's based on mid range windows. Not bargain basement but not super nice.

Flooffloof · 17/10/2018 20:02

Prices will have gone up since my last foray into windows.
Soooo a rough guesstimate (assumes some windows are large, some small) £300 per window, £1000 per door.
That was for triple glazed, can't remember the profile sorry.
Never had bifolds so can't help there.
To put into perspective, from memory because the receipt is put away "somewhere"
My smallest window was £86
My biggest window £480
Smallest window, fixed (means non opening) umm 870mm by 900mm
Biggest window, very large, two top openers, decent hardware, lockable, night vent.
Hth
Oh only a few years ago.

They will give you an estimate from the outside. Only need to go inside to get the exact measurements. That's what ours did, as we were at work.

Mountainsided · 17/10/2018 20:04

Thanks, good to know who to avoid. Obviously it depends on style, number of openings etc and will get several quotes. Good to know to try local, had always though going natiaonl company would equal better and better value. House is I think 30years old.

Have no idea about the process. How long from booking them to quote to getting the windows in is it usually?

Just had mine done and it was five weeks order to fit, however still got snagging issues to deal with. Windows seem to be reasonably easy though compared to eg wiring, plumbing. You will need plaster repair though.

Mountainsided · 17/10/2018 20:08

Thanks, 5 weeks doesn’t sound too bad , and plastering/painting can be redone. Looking to redo the kitchen/knock a wall through so that’s another challenge!

Our 12 cost us 8k

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 17/10/2018 20:43

July this year, 17 windows, £14,500 after some haggling. That's in the Highlands though.

LostInShoebiz · 17/10/2018 21:11

10 large sash windows, 2 doors, last year = £21,000 in South East.

Maelstrop · 17/10/2018 21:58

3 bed semi, all windows except the bathroom, triple aspect kitchen, done a couple of years ago, £8000. Barely any damage. The company did UVPC doors for us about £800 in another property.

Blankiefan · 17/10/2018 22:53

We've just put in 7 plus a huge french door. Cost just under £7K inc vat. All upvc.

But we also put in two (huge) bay windows at the start of the year for £10k. They were wood.

Camsie30 · 17/10/2018 22:54

I was quoted £25k for uPVC sash windows last year. Nearly fell off my chair

Blankiefan · 17/10/2018 22:55

Definitely go local. At least half the price.

Also never give your phone number to Everest. I did more than a dozen years ago and they still haunt me.

trilbydoll · 17/10/2018 22:56

I tried to get a quote from a national Co but they wanted to come round and tell me in person. I said tell me on the phone or email me and I never heard from them again!

We got 11 windows and 2 doors for about £8k I think.

NotMrsTumble · 17/10/2018 23:00

750/window for bog standard upvc tilt and turn. Around 3k for bifolds. Prices don't seem to have changed hugely. (windows in old house and new over a period of 15 years, pretty much the same price) Was quoted 1500 for patio doors (I've still to do those) and in excess of 1000 per window to refurbish and incorporate the existing stained glass panes. (I'm waiting for my lottery numbers to come up for those to be on the agenda)

TruelyTruelyScrumptious · 17/10/2018 23:28

Mine are close to £70,000 in total. Wood, all bespoke. Each sash is at least 2 metres high, there are loads of them. Some are round and oval.

purplepigs · 17/10/2018 23:29

£25k

Mountainsided · 19/10/2018 10:13

Thanks very much for all the info, it’s good to have a rough idea of cost. Definitely won’t be going for bespoke wooden sash at this point, no matter how beautiful!
