People in UK saying "high school"

I've noticed this term being used more and more. To me it's "Senior" or "Secondary" school. Schools with the old fashioned divisions have "Lower, Middle and Upper". Even if you follow the American usage it isn't the same as our Senior, i believe it is years 10, 11, 12 and 13. Why are people calling Senior school High school? I know, each to their own blah blah

I’m 30 and we definitely said high school when I was at school. I think it’s high school in Scotland as well?

ClownsAndJokers · 17/10/2018 11:38

I went to a high school in the uk in the 90s, it’s not a new thing! It’s called a college now but it’s still called high school by teachers and parents here.

Sitranced · 17/10/2018 11:38

My school was called High School.

It's high school in Scotland.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 17/10/2018 11:38

I’m in my 40’s and it was high school.

NothingisForgotten · 17/10/2018 11:39

I went to an English secondary school. I have lived in Scotland for 17 years, and it's always been high school up here.

MrsVietor · 17/10/2018 11:39

Yeah we all said high school in Scotland (in the 90s).

TitsalinaBumSquash · 17/10/2018 11:39

31 and we had Primary school until year 6 and then High school until year 11.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 17/10/2018 11:39

My school was actually called [Placename] High School

civicxx · 17/10/2018 11:39

I'm 25 & mine was actually called
'town name' High School :)

MrsMartinRohde · 17/10/2018 11:40

I'm inclined to say and think "secondary" - I went to a comprehensive - but where I live most of the secondary schools have "high" in their names, so it's all "high school" the kids talk about

iklboo · 17/10/2018 11:40

My school was called High School - and I left in 1985.

SchrodingersMeowth · 17/10/2018 11:41

I’m from Scotland and went to Hillhead High... What else were we meant to call it? 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ It was also “senior” for the last years...

Weezol · 17/10/2018 11:41

It's regional, that's all. It's 'secondary' where I am, but 30 miles away in the same county, it's 'high school'.

It might go back to the days of Secondary Moderns I suppose

ShatnersBassoon · 17/10/2018 11:42

This isn't a new or recent thing, you just haven't noticed it before now.

ProfYaffle · 17/10/2018 11:42

Another one who went to a [placename] High School in the 80s.

Mulberry72 · 17/10/2018 11:43

It’s always been called High School round here (North West)

Tomorrowisanewday · 17/10/2018 11:43

My school was called [town] High School. 40 years ago. Scotland.

OvO · 17/10/2018 11:43

High school in Scotland equals secondary.

Upslidedown · 17/10/2018 11:43

I went to Place Name High School as well.

MumNeedsANap · 17/10/2018 11:43

Me too, mine was "Name" High School, in the 80's

MinecraftHolmes · 17/10/2018 11:44

It's always been high school in Scotland

Counter27 · 17/10/2018 11:44

Mine was Senior School. Private fee paying though so maybe that's the difference?

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 17/10/2018 11:44

I'm 33 and went to a high school. Funnily enough the UK is not one homogenous mass we have regions with different dialects and colloquilisms.... strange you've never noticed that.

AdelaideK · 17/10/2018 11:45

I'm in NW England and went to a high school. This was in the late 80s so definitely not a recent thing.
