People in UK saying "high school"

I've noticed this term being used more and more. To me it's "Senior" or "Secondary" school. Schools with the old fashioned divisions have "Lower, Middle and Upper". Even if you follow the American usage it isn't the same as our Senior, i believe it is years 10, 11, 12 and 13. Why are people calling Senior school High school? I know, each to their own blah blah

OP posts:
BertramKibbler · 17/10/2018 12:04

School name was St blah blahs high school for girls.

That being said I tend to say secondary school.

blueskiesandforests · 17/10/2018 12:07

We called it secondary, not senior or high.

Primary school, then secondary school.

Infant school, junior school, senior school I guess - I've actually never heard it called senior school in everyday life I don't think.

I guess its regional.

PinkCalluna · 17/10/2018 12:07

Joining in the “it’s high school in Scotland” chorus.

Where do think the Americans got it?

High school in Scotland and Northern Ireland for certain types of schools. It’s even in the name of some schools.

mycelialnetwork · 17/10/2018 12:08

I teach at "town name" High School on the south coast, so not just a northern thing.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/10/2018 12:08

I found this out recently too - I live in Australia, so it's all High School over here (apart from the Grammar schools and Christian colleges). I asked the question in a FB group and was told the same - that regions in the UK use High School, and some are actually called that.

But I didn't go to a primary school either - I went to an infants' school, then a junior school, and then a senior school. Everywhere is slightly different!

JacquesHammer · 17/10/2018 12:09

We have one called Town Grammar School which is a state comp. One called Town School which is a state comp.

One called Town High School which is a selective grammar.

No confusion there Grin

notangelinajolie · 17/10/2018 12:09

No not new or American round here. I went to school in the eighties and it was definitely called Blah Blah High School.

Marcipex · 17/10/2018 12:10

Mine was called Townname High School in the 70s. Always had been, still is now.
The boys equivalent is the Townname Grammar School.

sashh · 17/10/2018 12:10

I went to St X's high school for girls. My brother went to Y's high school for boys.

Previously I went to a primary school, a first school and then a junior school. If we had not moved I would have gone from my first school to middle school and then the local high school.

I'm in my 50s.

Also because children start later in US schools their 'senior year' is equivalent to our year 11.

PattiStanger · 17/10/2018 12:10

There was a local school to mine growing up called XX High School, not in Scotland, and where I live now people use both high and secondary interchangabley.

Where do you live that you've not come across this?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 17/10/2018 12:10

Not even that regional - Guildford High School anyone?

susurration · 17/10/2018 12:10

My secondary school was also called X High School, so my friends and I all got into the habit of referring to when we were at High School.

oohyoudevilyou · 17/10/2018 12:11

The High School in our town is an independent secondary, but plenty are ordinary state secondaries, including the one my niece attends in Yorkshire.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 17/10/2018 12:14

It was high school when I went in 90s and when my 2 older sisters were there, the school is actually called XXXX high school and always has been. North West if that makes any difference

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 17/10/2018 12:14

My high school was opened in 1961 and given the name "TOWNNAME High School". It's not a new thing or an unusual thing.

Tinklewinkle · 17/10/2018 12:14

They’ve always been called High schools round here - but then we had middle schools until fairly recently so primary, middle and high

My daughters’ school was always XX High School - it’s now an academy and has a fancier title but everyone still calls it XX High

SassitudeandSparkle · 17/10/2018 12:14

Another one who attended an educational establishment called name of minor royal High School in the late 70's/early 80's. Probably just parents who are used to referred to school by that name, even if it's not used as much now that we have Academy Schools (I think Academy was a common school name in Scotland before that, though).

SlowlyShrinking · 17/10/2018 12:14

My school was called ‘area of town high school’ but we also used to say secondary school as a general term

susurration · 17/10/2018 12:15

All of these posters saying they went to X High School in the north west, I keep wondering if we all went to the same one! (Although in reality I know this is highly unlikely)

RiverTam · 17/10/2018 12:16

there will be individual exceptions based on the name of the school (which are almost certainly historic) but the categories are by and large primary and secondary. Some primaries are split into Infants and Juniors but by and large secondaries are just secondaries (ie from year 7 onwards).

I believe Bedfordshire still has Middle and High schools but I think that's the only area.

So I think most of these responses are to do with the name of the school, rather than it's status, if you like. Which is what I think you're asking about (and also state not private).

LeftRightCentre · 17/10/2018 12:16

Alas, when a stealth American-bashing thread doesn't go the way the OP planned and posters show him/her up with regional difference Smile.

Is it Halloween yet? You know, that tacky, grabby Celtic tradition that's thousands of years old? Grin

KaliforniaDreamz · 17/10/2018 12:17

if you had primary middle high in your borough it was def high school
this was in 80s

NicePieceOfPlaid · 17/10/2018 12:17

I went to the girls' grammar "town" High School for Girls but secondary mods were also called "area" High School - 1960s

Noonemournsthewicked · 17/10/2018 12:18

High school in North West.

Had this with my southern friend who kept correcting me. I know what my own school was called!
