Worst 'tourist' places you've visited

A little inspired by the school trips thread but I have been thinking about the worst places I've visited in pursuit of leisure. Disclaimer-sorry if you live there/love it. These are not anything other than my experience on that day/time.

There was the time I took a group of patients for a nice country stroll, which turned out to be a lay-by off an A-Road.

Or going on holiday to a small town near Gainsborough and realising that there was nothing to do, at all. We were there for a week!

Legoland. No contest.
By the way, the reason so many people get diarrhoea in all inclusive resorts is that they lace the food with laxatives as a safeguard against food poisoning i.e. it’s not in your system long enough to cause any serious trouble (it’s often standing out for a long time in warm conditions) but you will be on the loo a lot!

TheFifthKey · 19/10/2018 14:40

Wait, what? That sounds unlikely.

Haha! Grin

Next time you hear an urban legend like that, stop to think it through before you repeat it! As if you wouldn't get food poisoning from contaminated food if it passed through your gut a bit quicker Grin Come on!

I must be immune to laxatives, then. Wink

Shoefleur · 19/10/2018 15:30

Actually someone who used to work in an all inclusive resort told me that’s what they do. Mild laxatives but laxatives nonetheless.

BruegelTheElder · 19/10/2018 15:36

Okay. But that doesn't make it any more true or any less a ridiculous and illogical idea.

TheFifthKey · 19/10/2018 15:38

In what form? Liquid, powder, what? They have no taste, I assume, and mix seamlessly into any type of food. Where do they buy the large quantities needed without arousing suspicion? In resorts with lots of AI hotels the pharmacists must make a packet!

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/10/2018 15:40

That makes no sense, surely you'd never go back to, or recommend a hotel if you and all the other guests had the shits the whole time?

pumpastrotter · 19/10/2018 15:58

Dundee was my worst experience. Me and an ex went in November 2010 when it was horrendous snow and the car got snowed in. Our travels went as far as a walk down the high street.

I thought it was because the locals don't prioritise health/hygiene good practice, especially in the under-developed countries. We've never had food poisoning in AI resorts in Euro/Med resorts, but every single time in Africa, Caribbean, Turkey, Egypt.

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2018 16:09

I’ve tried Morocco, Lanzorote & Kos all inclusive hotels, eaten the food & neither myself or travel companion has had any Diarrhea or tummy upset.

No words. Just a face. Hmm

thenightsky · 19/10/2018 16:18

I've been to AI in Turkey, Cuba, Canaries and Egypt. Only ever had the shits twice, both times in Egypt.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 19/10/2018 16:38

For those of you shocked by the poverty in the USA, try spending some time in the deep South. It really is shocking in places. Memphis for instance, a block or so away from famous Beale street and all the drunk tourists, and it's a different world.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/10/2018 16:46

You're very welcome, DarlingNikita, and don't worry about the "folders" as it's nothing posh - just a few notes I keep so I can remember (and find!!) places which appealed to me last time Wink

PollyFlinderz · 19/10/2018 16:59

@DarlingNikita I got my Venice folder out for you this morning - have a look at some of these, all of which I've used at various times:

Grin Grin

I have folders for all the places I visit too but more so for prior to the trip.

You mean you never got up the Law Hill or to the Deep Sea chippie for your tea? Shock Shock

LaurieFairyCake · 19/10/2018 17:10

I'm not being funny but is Dundee now a tourist destination

Really?

SausageOnAFork · 19/10/2018 17:14

I agree Laurie. It’s like the post earlier saying that Derby wasn’t up to much.
Tourist destinations, not just places you’ve been.

PollyFlinderz · 19/10/2018 17:16

The new V&A opened recently and the waterfront is now very different. I’m pleasantly surprised each time I go back to see my family.

GabsAlot · 19/10/2018 18:09

i love devon dont go to the main towns go down the smaller villages on the coast-beautiful

LaurieFairyCake · 19/10/2018 18:10

I'm very surprised.

I lived in Dundee nearly 30 years ago and moved to Stirling as it was so gloomy

Stirling. Suicide capital of Scotland.

PollyFlinderz · 19/10/2018 18:30

Dundee was going through very difficult times in the 80’s and times were very hard with one large employer after another closing down.

It’s a lot more upbeat now with a lot of wide open spaces that make it seem lighter though like a lot of places the High Street is dead.

Travelledtheworld · 19/10/2018 19:51

Went to Dundee for the day last week and had a great time! But I was with a good friend, which makes all the difference.
It really did used to be grim though.
I wouldn't go for a whole week.

kierenthecommunity · 19/10/2018 20:15

Several people have mentioned Land’s End, but I can’t imagine it’s a patch on the tedium that is John O Groats. You drive for what seems to be about nine hours and all that’s there is the sign and a boarded up hotel. There is literally nothing else. Although the Castle of Mey isn’t far away and I enjoyed that.

The other Scottish disappointment is Culloden. Twenty quid to look at a field.

However I will forgive Scotland for those two transgressions as the rest of the country makes my soul happy Smile
