Can you influence conceiving a girl?

Hi
This is lighthearted.
To be honest. We would secretly like a girl second time around. One of each and all that.

Do you believe in any of the malarky that claims to influence the conception of a girl? For example, eating 27000grams of watercress before you do the wild thing.

(Disclaimer- I love my son. I would love another son. This is not for religious reasons.)

Sorry, weirdly I find it quite fascinating (such as why are more boys born after wars - is it a case of men returning from the front-line with ramped up testosterone levels?).

I think at the end of the day it is more than just a 50/50 chance in that there are various contributory factors at play but I don't think there's a lot that can be done to influence those..

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 20:11

Forgive the term, Mr Yawnsy is a 'manly' man. Moves like a polar bear. The body hair of bison and head as smooth as a Jason Statham. Testesterone is an issue.

Silversun83- maybe it had something to do with low levels of something else? Given how weary their bodies would have been.

I agree. It's a 50/50 chance and at the end of the day you still win big.

I've got one of each. Tried every old wives tale in the book as we were really hoping this one would be a boy, it's a girl 😩
We are both delighted and terrified in equal measures

HenryInTheTunnel · 16/10/2018 21:01

Only thing i have heard is that male sperm are speedier but don't live as long so to increase chance of a boy you dtd on ovulation day. To increase chance of a girl you dtd 1-2 days before ovulation day then abstain

3boysandabump · 16/10/2018 21:15

I've just told my dh (father of 4 boys) the testosterone theory and he's now walking round like billy big bollocks 😂

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 21:19

Billy big bollocks obviously missed out on the bicycle position and flying a jet fighter!

This thread is brilliant!Grin

I did read an article about the things that naturally slightly sway whether a baby is male or female. Females are a ‘safer’ bet genetically as they are less vulnerable in the womb and as infants so you’re more likely to have one after a loss, if the mother is less well nourished (I think that’s the idea behind the gender swaying diets) older, less stable relationship etc, not that you can control any of thoses other than diet. My dd was conceived after a mc and the sperm that made my ds must have been a lightening swimmer as I’d already ovulated.

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 21:36

Thanks to this thread I now have a google images history on the bicycle position. I personally blame Blobby10 for that.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/10/2018 21:39

Only read page 1 so maybe repeating but there’s the Shettles method that some people swear by. Works with the idea that female sperm live longer and swim slower whereas boy sperm are fast and die quickly. So have sex according to when you ovulate and which sex you want. Haven’t done it myself though!

timeisnotaline · 16/10/2018 21:43

Fascinating stuff. I have 2 boys conceived on try 1 with a positive opk so on ovulation I guess. Next time will tell dh NO not tonight I’m fertile and your lazy no stamina sprinter boy sperm will get there and I’ve told you 1000 times, if a jobs worth doing it is worth doing properly!

oldbirdy · 16/10/2018 21:44

Years ago I read that women with higher than average testosterone tended to favour boys, but had more girls in later childbearing years as testosterone dips. My granny had 2 late daughters after a string of boys (Catholics!) So I thought it might be worth a try. After 3 sons at 30, 33 and 36 I conceived my DD at 39. My sister conceived a DS at 37 or 38 and DD at 41 so worked for her too.

3boysandabump · 16/10/2018 21:45

😂😂😂😂

Silversun83 · 16/10/2018 21:45

It appears to all be over then Grin

One of DH's friends is one of the least manly men I know.. His wife was desperate for a boy.. They have three girls. I knew from the beginning.

@3boys : Ha ha! It could have just been very well-timed DTD Wink

@Yawnsy.. Will you report back however long down the line?!

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 21:58

My moustache is becoming a fortnightly issue. I think my testosterone may be on the beefcake side.

Of course I am going to keep you updated. This is in the name of science.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 16/10/2018 21:59

The Shettles method has been thoroughly debunked. The science upon which the theory was based, was incorrect.

I do think jaffa cakes and strawberry nesquik work however. Not for any scientific reason mind.

DC2018 · 16/10/2018 22:08

As with pp I read that having sex 2- 4 days before ovulation are more likely to result in a girl as they are stronger swimmers x

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 22:18

Think Mr Yawnsy is overwhelmed by all this scientific evidence. He said he's not that fussed anymore whether it's a boy or a girl. That's tough shit because I've ordered a khaki jumpsuit(xl), aviators and the Topgun soundtrack is prepared on Spotify. Jaffa cakes will be presented on a cake stand on the bedside table.

Clarabella8 · 16/10/2018 22:21

I had 3 boys and used the shettles method for the 4th (girl)
I used a saliva ovulation test kit, I remember at the time thinking, if this bloody works I’ll be amazed.
We didn’t find out gender at scan, the day she was born, honestly it was pure shock and joy.
I’ve heard the story about pilots having more female children, and was told it’s to do with temperature. They are seated for long periods of time so things get a bit... ha! but then that could be said of so many other jobs so mmm not sure.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 22:30

Yes the temperature thing is correct, the person I told you about earlier Op, used to make her DH sit in a hot bath before sex when trying for a girl, I remember too now that she said when he came he pulled nearly out. Sorry if a bit graphic Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 22:33

And no orgasm for the woman is supposed to help.

Iwantamarshmallow · 16/10/2018 22:33

When I was ttc first DC I read that you should eat a vegetarian magnesium rich diet to conceive a girl. I was already a vegetarian so I took a magnesium suppliment as well and gave birth to a girl . When I conceived my son 3 years later i wasnt taking magnesium and had been eating meat for a while. It was probabaly a fluke but it can't hurt to try it.

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 22:44

Mr Yawnsy is not going to like that one little bit.
