Can you influence conceiving a girl?

Hi
This is lighthearted.
To be honest. We would secretly like a girl second time around. One of each and all that.

Do you believe in any of the malarky that claims to influence the conception of a girl? For example, eating 27000grams of watercress before you do the wild thing.

(Disclaimer- I love my son. I would love another son. This is not for religious reasons.)

Well if you want a grand sample of one - you eat too much, mix with a penchant for tv bingeing, count fizzy fruit flavoured Haribo as your 5 a day, have sex when and how you fancy it and add the most laidback partner imaginable and there you go - worked for me three times.

Pebblespony · 16/10/2018 13:44

It's called the Shettles Theory but I'm not sure how solid the research is or if it's been discounted.

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 14:06

Liking the pilot thing.
Might go to an arcade and find the simulator thing. Treat him to £40's worth of the jet fighter programme.

Laid back man, eating too much and TV bingeing resulted in a boy.

Might be worthwhile thinking about the Haribo.

Girl and a boy here.. Girl took nearly a year and DTD roughly x100 times to conceive, boy took one... On the day/day after I ovulated. I think there is some basis to the thought that girl swimmers are slower but live longer and boys are speedier but die off more quickly. Obviously I don't know which of DH's sperms resulted in our DD but can be sure DS was the result of a speedy one!

Oh and I did read somewhere that a study had shown a higher percentage of daughters born to long-distance runners (I think men running more than 25 miles a week).. So maybe add a new pair of trainers to your list?!

A quick Google reveals some other things that might help Wink

Google the shettles method for a girl. It's really helpful!

DramaAlpaca · 16/10/2018 14:49

It's not in the least bit scientific of course, but I'm certain that all three of my boys were conceived on the day of ovulation.

elliejjtiny · 16/10/2018 14:50

I read somewhere that if you have a small age gap you are more likely to have children of the same sex. So maybe wait a few years of you want a different one.

Namechange8471 · 16/10/2018 14:56

Yeah to conceive a boy (apparently) you need to have sex as close to ovulation as possible, for for a girl I'd assume the opposite.

Anyway they are books etc available.

Wedontbelievewhatsontv · 16/10/2018 14:59

I am gonna chime in and say as a DM of 2 girls, neither of which were conceived at peak ovulation ( i.e ... little surprises!) ... I anecdotally accused my partner of having "camping sperm" . Not so long after, I read about the female sperm being stronger and able to survive longer til the egg was in the right spot . Campers is what they are- vindicated !

Lost5stone · 16/10/2018 15:00

Actually of people I know (well enough to discuss when we DTD to TTC) the ones who know the exact date they conceived have boys. I've never really realised that until this thread. I have a DD and we DTD lots in the 10 days running to ovulation.

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 15:00

I need Mr Yawnsy to....
be a pilot
Vegetarian
Runner, good runner
Low calorie diet
Interested in 'science'
Enjoy the bicycle position
Tolerate stress

I'm wondering if I could save him the hassle and ask Tom(Cruise) if he is free on the day before I ovulate?

Ph can influence sex. Acidic for girl alkaline for boys. During fertility investigations I was found the have acidic cervical mucous and they thought this was why I wasn't conceiving. I had to do sodium bicarbonate douch pre sex to bring the ph down. I had a girl. I think I read similar in a fertility book. If your ph is normal they suggest dilute lemon juice for a higher chance of a girl.

MrsBodger · 16/10/2018 15:11

Ask Sarah Champion

Can you influence conceiving a girl?
TheCag · 16/10/2018 15:16

I don’t think shettles is at all reliable. Anecdotally, I conceived one boy on day of ovulation, one boy from sex six days before ovulation.
There’s a lot of theories out there but I’d take them all with a pinch of salt. I’m expecting a girl now after two boys and honestly don’t think I did much differently, dh is more stressed with work now so I guess that could be a factor.

Bunnyhop1502 · 16/10/2018 15:23

We attempted the shettles method. I fell pregnant straight away and had a girl but pretty sure that would have happened anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like to think it worked though!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/10/2018 15:59

I conceived day 13 which should have resulted in a boy. I had a girl.
I think its a simple case of you get what you're given

Yawnsy · 16/10/2018 19:08

Schooled again on Mumsnet. Thanks for your replies.
DH has returned to a vegetarian meal. He's confused by why he has to go on the flight simulator. I have asked him how much he likes the smell of lemons. I suggested he should try running tonight and that he can take a salad for lunch tomorrow. I told him that female sperm are so much better than his lazy male camper sperm. He's getting a bit pissed off.
I think this might just work.

Grin

But no, male swimmers=speedy but peak too soon, female=slow and steady, play the long game Wink

TheTitan · 16/10/2018 19:22

The egg also decides which sperm to let in, so maybe not as simple as who is the fastest swimmer.
I have 2 girls and 1 boy, cannot remember when or how many times we dtd for the first 2 but the 3rd was a drunken fumble just after i thought my period had finished and it was safe, she is now 23Grin

Silversun83 · 16/10/2018 19:25

I think testosterone levels in the man do also contribute.. which is why there has been research showing men with infertility issues (ie low sperm count) do have a higher percentage of daughters.. That's the basis for why hardcore runners have more girls in that that level of running reduces testosterone levels.

And very scientifically, in people I know, there does often seem to be a correlation between the, erm, outward masculinity of the man and the sex of the offspring GrinHmm

Aprilislonggone · 16/10/2018 19:27

I have 2 dd's conceived a year apart, both after only dtd on day 23 of a 28 day cycle.

Crunchymum · 16/10/2018 19:28

Google the Shettles method.

I think that's what it's called.
