DC fell out of high chair - WWYD

DC (11 months ) fell out of his high chair this morning during breakfast. Must've catapulted himself out. Should he be taken to the doctors? I'm told he is sleeping now.

For reference , now is his usual naptime so sleeping isn't unusual.

I think it depends how he fell/landed, what he landed on, how he has been since...

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 16/10/2018 09:26

If he's behaving normally and not sleepier than usual, I'd leave it but keep an eye out in the next few days for signs of any more concerning injury. My DS did this and I sat down A&E for hours only to be told what my gut told me anyway; he was fine as he was playing nicely and was chirpy after the initial shock of the fall had passed

I think it was forehead but can't be sure.

My children have had a few knocks to the head. The only time we went to the hospital was when a big black bump immediately appeared and it looked like there was blood rushing to the middle and was about to explode. She was absolutely fine.

Most recently 2yo catapulted off the back of the sofa and landed on her head. She was fine.

I have learnt to watch out for behaviour, routine, eyes (do they look the same), unusual drowsiness and any sickness. I'd suggest keeping an eye out for these things as well as looking for any bumps to monitor. Of course you also have to trust your instincts.

I'm not actually at home with him , wondering if I should leave work to go home.

I personally would, just for my own piece of mind

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 16/10/2018 09:43

I always thought if a child hit their head they shouldn't fall asleep even if it is nap but I could be wrong. I guess it depends on other factors too.

Pringlemunchers · 16/10/2018 09:45

Has your partner rung 111. How do t
feel they

Pringlemunchers · 16/10/2018 09:45

How do they feel about it ?

TheSheepofWallSt · 16/10/2018 09:46

DS fell off the slide at nursery onto his head a few weeks back- they called me at work to say he was behaving fine, no warnings signs of concussion, but because it was a fall and a bump they had to let me know.

I went to check on him at lunch time, checked the bumps, checked his behaviour, gave him a kiss and a cuddle and went back to work, leaving strict instructions to call if they had ANY doubts.

He was fine- but I had to check myself or I wouldn’t have been able to concentrate at work.

Batteriesallgone · 16/10/2018 09:46

Who is with him?

What is their assessment of it?

LongSummerDays · 16/10/2018 09:47

Babies are so quick when they move. Im sure your dc will be ok!

I used to have to use reins to clip my Houdini into high chairs, buggies, trolleys etc as he was up and escaping within milliseconds of his bottom hitting the seat!

controlledremote · 16/10/2018 09:48

My husband is with him , I just worry slightly due to his age. He isn't quite at boisterous toddler age yet!

If it was you at home and DH at work would he come home? Don't you trust him? If was there and saw what happened. He must be satisfied no great harm was done. Babies are very robust.

PeoniesandPretties · 16/10/2018 09:58

If its worried you enough to post on here then absolutely call 111 and ask for advice, it will give you peace of mind.

earlybyrd · 16/10/2018 10:01

Watch out for a delay in concussion - can take up to two days to appear

ApolloandDaphne · 16/10/2018 10:01

What would be the point of OP calling 111? She wasn't there. She has no idea what happened or how her DS is presenting. If her DH is worried he should be the one calling for advice.

sidesplittinglol · 16/10/2018 10:03

Keep an eye on his behaviour, if he gets any of the following symptoms:
-headache
-dizziness
-blurred vision
-vomiting
If you notice anything, you are concerned or he gets worse take him to A&E. If he has a bump, apply a cool compress for 10 mins.
Any head injuries in children should be looked at as even if they do appear well at first, other symptoms can present itself later. So it's always important to monitor them. It's fine to allow them to sleep, but just make sure you can arouse them every 5-10 mins or so. The chances are he is fine, but I would always err on the side of caution especially with young children.

123bananas · 16/10/2018 10:03

111 will send you to A&E for a fall from height under 2. A&E will observe for a minimum of 4 hours post fall. In most cases they are fine, but I would get him to take him just in case.

sidesplittinglol · 16/10/2018 10:06

Posted too soon

...and get him checked out regardless. Concussion can take up to 24 hours to appear and compression up to 96 hours.
Please do go.

buscaution · 16/10/2018 10:10

I always wonder about these threads.

DC has fallen, should I take them to GP?

Well it depends on how the DC is after the incident. Having a fall isn't a reason to go to the doctors. The effects of the fall however....

How is the Child?

differentnameforthis · 16/10/2018 10:11

What did he fall onto?

Carpet? Wood etc?

TheOneWith · 16/10/2018 10:15

I would ask the fully functioning adult (your DHShock) who is with your DC and presumably witnessed the incident, what they think. If you don’t trust them and their judgement then perhaps reconsider leaving ever your child with them again.

controlledremote · 16/10/2018 10:16

Sorry yes it was laminate wood flooring.
Dh thinks he's fine but I'm just feeling cautious
