Is it ok to give dd just fruit for breakfast?

Dd (3) doesn't like any cereal and only really likes toast. She loves fruit, especially strawberries, raspberries and sometimes grapes for breakfast. Is it ok to give her this everyday? She doesn't always have a big appetite at home but eats well at nursery as far as I know. She goes 3 and a half days a week. Is fruit like this too sugary? Not sure why I think that. Is that true?

It won’t fill her up for long. You need to add some protein. Would she have some milk, yoghurt, cubes of cheese or even little rolls of ham?

Cereal is worse anyway. Give her the fruit! As long as she's not hungry and it fills her up I don't see the issue. Will she have yoghurt with it?

Would she have it with Greek yoghurt? It would be a bit more filling that way.

She will have yoghurt but usually something like ski smooth. I don't think she'll eat plain yoghurt

Also she has breakfast about half 6 then has snack at nursery about 10

I'd give something more filling first. It is just sugar and not a habit I wanted my kids to have. I still battle with one Ds as fruit is healthy, he says! He will eat a carton of blueberries to himself if given the chance! He has porridge, then some blueberries.

Fruit after main, or with...apples on toast with cinnamon is nice.

Before I started weaning my baby I’d have said too sugary, not enough slow release energy.

We eat pretty healthily, love food, cook from fresh etc etc and I still currently have a 1 year old whose preferred diet is breast milk, little cubes of cheese, raisins, tomatoes, spaghetti (emphatically not pasta in any other shape Hmm) and stolen bits of cake. Maybe the odd pea, if he’s feeling really adventurous, and also seems to eat anything he finds on the floor with scant regard for whether it is actually made of food.

So I now think fruit for breakfast is probably fine!

My DS has strawberries every day, he loves them. Not for breakfast though as they wouldn't be filling enough.

Is there nothing else she likes? For breakfast DS likes porridge, boiled/scrambled eggs, croissants, etc.

Personally I don’t worry about sugar at all if it’s in fruit! It’s things like squash that have it in that I’d save just for treats.
I think good advice that it’s better with yoghurt and yes I’d try home sweetened yoghurt instead - I am planning to buy coconut sugar on offer in Sainsburies ar moment for things that don’t need much . Also xylitol is a really natural sweetener a nutritionist friend swears by (though never let dogs eat it as bad for them). It doesn’t spike your blood sugar and weirdly is actually good for teeth!

I do try to go for filling things here- DD is fussy so if I have time I make pancakes with ground oats just so she eats egg. But there are many days she just has a banana and oat cake for example

Toast, fruit, yoghurt of any kind that she’ll eat.
At that age she needs calories. If she’ll eat cheese or eggs, add them into the mix.

Remember, any food or drink can be unhealthy if consumed excessively. As part of a balanced diet I wouldn’t get hung up on (for example) the type of yoghurt.

(In fairness, they all end up on kebabs and alcohol in uni anyway, undoing all the early years 😂)

Hollowtalk the amount of sugar in ski yoghurts is far greater than a drizzle of honey. So keep your rolling eyes to yourself.

OP said she wouldn’t eat plain yoghurt. Greek/plain yoghurt with a bit of honey is far better for you than a ski/kids/ fruit yoghurt.

@WowOoo why on earth would you battle with your son over eating a carton of (low calories, full of antioxidants and vitamins) blueberries? It's fructose. NATURAL sugar. It doesn't convert to fat the way normal sugars do.

Are you or were you overweight? Is that why you're scared of sugars? (Even the natural kind)
