Is it ok to give dd just fruit for breakfast?

Dd (3) doesn't like any cereal and only really likes toast. She loves fruit, especially strawberries, raspberries and sometimes grapes for breakfast. Is it ok to give her this everyday? She doesn't always have a big appetite at home but eats well at nursery as far as I know. She goes 3 and a half days a week. Is fruit like this too sugary? Not sure why I think that. Is that true?

I'd give some protein at breakfast time, cream cheese on toast or scrambled egg with toast.

DD has a slice of toast and a banana. Never really thought anything of it to be honest. But by MN standards it's probably awful

No lost5stone I reckon that’s a really good breakfast and sure others do too!! Does she vary it so doesn’t get bored?

I have really double standards as once the children are at school I have my breakfast which is usually several coffees!

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try some honey in Greek yoghurt. I think she's getting bored of toast. She doesn't usually finish one slice now. That's why I started giving fruit. Now she'll eat the fruit but not the toast. She's good with her veg so I know she's eating plenty of that. I just worry she's having too much sugar otherwise

What do you put on the toast?

You need to find stuff she likes. Honey, jam, banana, peanut butter. The sugar is fine if she eats an otherwise balanced diet.

I would play around with toast. We do different toppings like peanut butter and banana or soft cheese and berries on top. Different types of bread like brioche?

Also what about American style pancakes? They are easy to make a batch up and you can freeze them. Fruit on the side.

doggymama - I battle with him as it's fruit the whole family would like to share. He forgets to ask a lot and he's old enough to know better!

He'd eat sweet things and nothing else is what I meant. I was overweight after having my kids for a short time. Sweet tooth kid is not overweight either. He certainly gets his 5 a day.

Whilst you should be aware of the nutritional content of foods, you also have to look at your child. 6yo DS now has cucumber and blueberries for breakfast, on packed lunch days, he'll have a ham sandwich, more cucumber and a satsuma and then he comes home from school and eats essentially two meals.
I know that this isn't ideal and I battled it for ages. The thing which stopped the battle was DH pointing out that that is how he feels. DH hasn't had breakfast for decades (even in a fancy hotel with breakfast included, he'll have perhaps a croissant) and is ambivalent about lunch. It is only really at 4pm that he begins to get hungry and he can easily still eat at 11pm at night. I, on the other hand, feel sick and uncomfortable if I eat any later than 8.30.
Not all societal norms work for everybody.
DD - older; weaned on the same sorts of things etc - eats much more traditionally and has the MN approved breakfasts of scrambled egg on brown bread or porridge for breakfast.

DS really likes cheese...he has fruit and a bit of cheddar for breakfast sometimes.

Fruit and a bit of toast is also a perfectly fine breakfast.

Some posters seriously have issues, and the amount of misinformation makes my teeth itch.

Fruit too sugary for breakfast?!?!?!?!?!? Carbs get converted straight into fat?!?!?!?! Toast is unhealthy and akin to devil food?!?!?!?! Honey better than other sugars?!?!?

Fruit is not just sugar. Carbs are not the work of the devil and toast is perfectly fine for breakfast. Excess carbs will get converted into glycogen - a storage form of glucose which is at its lowest point after a period of fasting, which is what sleep is.

Toast is perfectly fine for breakfast, as is fruit. Eating both is great for breakfast.

@Mominatrix. I never said that the sugar in honey is better or different to the sugar in a ski yoghurt. Sugar is sugar. However, there is double the amount of sugar (13.6grams) in a ski yoghurt versus about 7grams in a teaspoon of honey. Plus Greek yoghurt has more protein. Therefore, I stand by the statement that Greek yoghurt and honey is better than a fruit/ ski type yoghurt.

I know fruit isn't just sugar. What I should have said was that I think just fruit for breakfast and nothing else until lunch isn't enough in my experience.
Not for mine anyway as I know they'd be hungry again within an hour.
Maybe other kids would be fine with this.

Honestly she’s 3 at that age they don’t need much food to be full, a bit of riot for breakfast is absolutely fine. The toast she likes is also fine. My 3 dc under 3 often have toast or fruit salad and guess what they never say for more food because they are full Shock

What is this mumsnet obsession with protein? 🙄 Yes protein is good but why oh why the obsession
