Do you prefer a book or kindle?

I’ve decided it’s a real book for me. I am getting back to reading as I spend far too much time browsing on the internet but find that I am more likely to be motivated to pick up an actual book than the kindle.

I love books, when I can see them. I'm severely visually impaired. I like braille, but books are very very scarce in braille these days and they cost a lot of money and or bulky. I learned what I books was about two years ago and boy do I have a lot of books on it. Both audio and regular ones, but for the regular ones I just use the voice over so it reads it to me as well. But I can have a lot more variety of books, and I speak nine languages, so I can find a box in Greek, Spanish, Italian, French, German, you name it. And the variety of subjects on iBooks is quite good. So while I don't really use the Kindle, our use my iPad a lot. I also travel quite a bit and it has saved the space and wait in my luggage. And it's great for flights to Southeast Asia since you don't need to turn the reading light on and annoy everybody on the 15 our flights Ha ha ha.

Real books for me; the smell feel, browsing my shelves to see which book to read next. I buy most of my books in charity shops plus I live about an hour from Barter Books so regularly stock up cheaply.

I have a very old Kindle tucked in a drawer but it hasn't been turned on in years. I am running out of bookshelf space so need to think where else I can store them!

I love books, but the Kindle has too many advantages, I'm totally converted.
It's very light and much easier to hold in one hand than a small book, not even mentionning a bigger book. And I don't even have to hold it when I read in bed.
It can hold a lot of books, so I never have to worry about finishing one earlier than expected or being in the mood for something else to read. And I already have too many books taking a lot of room in the house.
The integrated dictionnaries are very useful, especially since I read in different languages.
It doesn't have retrolighting so no eye fatigue, unlike a computer screen.
The only inconvenience is the slight reflection of light on the screen, which means that I have to adjust my position or the position of the light in the room.

Love my Kindle!

Didsomeonesaybunny · 13/10/2018 19:18

I love the feel of a book; however, I’m a bit of a bear freak and I don’t like having loads of books everywhere so now have a kindle as so much can be stored on it. A kindle is good to read in the dark too and I find I can finish a book faster on a kindle.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 13/10/2018 19:20

Kindle. Read in bed and heavy books were a pain and often dropped bonking me on the nose.
I have re-bought all my favourites for kindle.

Fantastiqueangel · 13/10/2018 19:23

Both. Book in the day. Kindle at night or when travelling. If I had to just choose, Kindle for versatility.

Kintan · 13/10/2018 19:26

Books at home, kindle on the tube and on holiday :) Cook books aways in book form though.

FreshEyre · 13/10/2018 19:33

Both. I love books and have a house that's full of them. I love browsing in Waterstones and have a particular weakness for cookbooks.

However, I use my Kindle every day for reading fiction and it's always in my bag in case I get a spare 5 minutes. I can get through a book a day on holiday and I travel a lot so having hundreds of books at my fingertips is great and cuts down on luggage. I also like being able to file books as I read them and know how many books I've read each year. I also like being able to read in bed with the dimmed light when DH is asleep.

GreasyFryUp · 13/10/2018 19:58

You can't fold the corner of the page on a kindle.....

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 13/10/2018 20:16

I was going to say book but then had a think, using the kindle app on my ipad means I can carry loads of books with me everywhere, it has a light screen that I can dim to read in bed and I dont have the whole storage issue and can go back to old favourites easily too so kindle app wins.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2018 20:19

Kindle Paperwhite. Can't be doing with trying to keep a book open, and can read in bed when OH is asleep.

MiddlingMum · 13/10/2018 20:24

Book.
I love the feel, the smell, the often lovely covers, the fact that you can tuck stuff inside them.

I opened a book last week which I hadn't read for years. A piece of paper fell out. It was a bookmark DD had made about 15 years ago, saying I love Mummy in very wobbly writing. That couldn't happen with a kindle.

TheSageofOnions · 13/10/2018 20:35

Book. Never needs charging.

Fatted · 13/10/2018 20:36

Kindle all the way.

My kindle is older than my children! It's a proper old one that doesn't even have a touch screen. But I love it. It's cheaper and more convenient to get the books I want. Plus I can take it on the move and read it anywhere.

It also means I can read trashy stuff without the shame of anyone else ever knowing!

LosingLola · 13/10/2018 20:38

I prefer a kindle. I have ongoing wrist problems due to arthritis, so find holding thick books (especially hardback) really difficult.

PlinkPlink · 13/10/2018 20:52

I love books. The smell of them is lovely.

But I hate the clutter so I have a Kindle.

Fergusmum · 13/10/2018 21:05

Many libraries now have their stock on Kindle Fire - so simple to download and your books are never late plus you can return them the same day if you don't think what you have chosen is what you are looking for.

EffYouSeeKaye · 13/10/2018 21:07

Oh a book. Without a doubt.

AviatorShades · 13/10/2018 21:09

Book every time.

GrumpyOldMare · 13/10/2018 21:35

Both.
I have kindle copies of my favourite ''real'' books. I can read them any where now - hate taking my ''real'' books out in case they get damaged or people pick them up and lose my place (I hate anyone touching my books!) I have over 200 books on my kindle - I haven't the space for that many extra books in my house.

chocoholicanon · 13/10/2018 21:51

Kindle app on my phone and iPad. It’s always to hand stuck in a queue, waiting rooms etc I have a kindle from when they first came out that I use on holiday in the sun. I have a kindle unlimited account and must save hundreds of pounds each year on it as I can race through 3/4 books in a week.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 13/10/2018 23:03

Kindle.

I like the look of books and own a lot, and have duplicates of my true loves, but for me, I like the convenience of having a backlit book that doesn’t make my arm ache and get cramp in my fingers. I rarely download from Amazon though tbh.

The one thing I miss is the wonderful cover art of books.

Aragog · 14/10/2018 09:22

Kindle

I read pretty much every evening in bed regardless of where I am and what time it is. I love the lightness of my Kindle and the fact I can read in the dark (paperwhite) as well as the convenience of buying a new book immediately as I finish another one.. If I am going overnight anywhere my kindle is the first thing I pack.

Aragog · 14/10/2018 09:26

Re screens; if you've not used one a Kindle e-reader is a totally different type of screen and shouldn't cause issues with eyes, even the light up ones. The kindle tablets have normal tablet/phone screens and can do, but not the e-reader versions. They really are more like looking at a normal page of a book.
