Do you prefer a book or kindle?

I’ve decided it’s a real book for me. I am getting back to reading as I spend far too much time browsing on the internet but find that I am more likely to be motivated to pick up an actual book than the kindle.

I much prefer my Kindle for quite a few reasons, mostly how much lighter it is to read in bed. I also like that I can read anywhere as it syncs, so I mostly read on my Paperwhite but if I really want to keep going through an exciting bit then I can read it on my phone while sitting in the car waiting for the DC to get out of school. Plus, I have a bit of a book problem and it was very apparent when we lived in a smallish flat with hundreds of books, but nobody at all can tell that I have thousands of Kindle books. If I read something that's first in a series and I really want to read the second then I can just buy it and download instantly, no waiting for the bookshop to order it in.

Kindle without question. It's also saved me a fortune. The books I buy are generally 99p

TonTonMacoute · 13/10/2018 12:34

Definitely a book, however the kindle is brilliant for travelling and holidays.

I often want to flick back in a book to check on stuff that happened earlier, and it’s a real pain on the kindle.

proper books for me i like the turning the page effect and buy all my books from charity shops dirt cheap and then they go back to the shop so makes two lots of money for the charity

Nenic · 13/10/2018 12:47

Kindle. I have over 700 books on it. I’d never have that many physical books in my house

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/10/2018 12:48

Kindle all the time. The only place I read a book is in the bath.

Bookbub and Book Hippo have cheap or free books from Amazon. I have over 800 books on my Kindle. That wouldn’t happen with real books.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2018 12:49

A book, unless travelling.

thismeansnothing · 13/10/2018 12:52

Book. I like having the hardcopy of something. Plus I really struggle reading off a screen

Hushnownobodycares · 13/10/2018 12:58

Books.

Get them second hand or from the library and pass them to charity when I'm done. I've noticed it's easier to get recent titles second hand now than it was a few years back. Think there may be more readers returning to the physical fold Grin

Sethis · 13/10/2018 13:02

I spend 9 months per year abroad and wouldn't survive without my kindle. On the other hand in my 3 months in the UK I read my book collection compulsively and don't touch the kindle.

opinionatedfreak · 13/10/2018 13:03

Kindle. I don't have houseroom for real books.

I get bookbub emails and buy stuff when it is 99p normally.

My sister and I have our Amazon accounts linked so can share kindle books which is nifty.

DolorestheNewt · 13/10/2018 13:04

As my eyesight's deteriorated (nothing dramatic, just normal age), my Kindle for pure reading. I'm now really dependent on good light, and a Paperwhite gives you the effect of reading with a really decent lamp. I will also often read on a laptop using the Kindle app, which is great because the laptop screen is automatically propped up at an angle without having to hold it and it's a longer wordcount before you need to turn the page.

It doesn't help that I tend to read Victorian doorstops, and the cheap versions (which I usually get second hand or from the library if a physical book) are quite small print on rather yellow-y paper, which I find really knackering. I don't struggle so much with newer books, whiter paper etc.

For study, however, it's got to be a hands on book.

AdoraBell · 13/10/2018 13:06

Real books for me.

WheelyCote · 13/10/2018 13:06

Books for me

PineappleTart · 13/10/2018 13:16

I adore books but I much prefer a kindle, especially when travelling. I now spend £8 a month on kindle unlimited which has worked out great for me. Before that I signed up to bookbub which emails links to free or cheap books

ThomasHardyPerennial · 13/10/2018 13:17

Kindle. It's so easy to just pick it up for 5 mins or so, without feeling the need to get settled to hold a book. I still buy plenty of physical books (don't enjoy reading non-fiction on the kindle), but read a lot of fiction through kindle unlimited and check the offers regularly.

Having a kindle really got me back in to reading, after several years of not reading any books at all.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/10/2018 13:20

I read on my kindle, as I can enlarge the print and it is comfortable when I am out and about. Some books I have on audible.
If I really like the book, I always get a paper version, too.

And textbooks have to be real paper, to contain my notes, post its and little scaps of paper I need to make sense of them.

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 13/10/2018 13:23

Physical books because it's so much cheaper for me to read the books I want that way. Library reservations are free where I live, and if I can't find a book I want there I order it 2nd hand online once it's been out a while. So I rarely pay more than £3 for a book (& 90% of the time I just use the library) whilst those same books on Kindle would be at least £5 each. I know you can get free Kindle books, but not ones I actually want to read.

SeaViewBliss · 13/10/2018 13:27

It’s become a mixture for me.

I love to read a real book. I love having them on my shelves. But I don’t have loads of space.

I had a kindle then went off it. Now Im using it again. I still buy a fair amount of real books, mostly second hand. I also still get a lot on my kindle if it’s cheap.

Kindle is handy for travelling plus I often have 15 minutes to kill between meetings so I use my iPad.

nicebitofquiche · 13/10/2018 13:28

Kindle. And I only buy cheap books.

DreamsofJacaranda · 13/10/2018 14:23

I love the feel and smell of a new book, and never wanted a Kindle. However, since I was given one I have read much more, I love it. The Kindle is so practical for reading in bed without putting the light on, so if I wake up early I can read without disturbing DH. It also fits perfectly in my smallish handbag, which no proper book would.

I love both, and wouldn’t like to be without my Kindle now.

LittleCandle · 13/10/2018 14:32

Books. But I have my favourite books also on my kindle, as I was going through many copies of them. I also like to have my kindle in my handbag for reading on a break at work or on the bus. But there's nothing like a real book.

DaysofWineandNeurosis · 13/10/2018 16:24

Kindle definitely.
I ended up bedridden at MIL’s house when we were on holiday and I hadn’t brought my kindle. Never again. I was forced to read the dross she had on her shelves. Some of them were quite heavy too and really made my arm ache.

Minniemountain · 13/10/2018 17:30

Book. A kindle was handy when BF but I've used it less and less since I stopped.

OatsBeansBarley · 13/10/2018 17:33

I'm back to books.

E reader for long holidays only.
