'It is what it is'

Has anyone else now had quite enough of this phrase? It's been around for donkey's years but surely it's now facing a total overkill over the past year or two on telly, social media and amongst friends. Politicians and reality tv slebs use it as frequently as each other.

DH has started to use it now and said it to me quite earnestly over the phone this pm. He has no idea how it makes my teeth itch. I should tell him. Before I kill him.

Oh yes!
"You got this"

Fuck off with your stupid American phrase that isn't even good English.
Like they say "good job" to kids. Job? No, good effort, maybe, but job? NO.

backagain2018 · 13/10/2018 14:51

At least "it is what is" makes some sense , making my teeth itch makes no sense at all.

Antigon · 13/10/2018 14:57

I think it's fine if used sparingly.

In my line of work, I've used it (rarely) when a client backs out of an agreement. What I really want to say is 'You've wasted x hours of mine and my colleagues' time' and I'm so fucking annoyed'.

Antigon · 13/10/2018 14:58

Itchy teeth is a symptom of gum disease.

What happened in the end?

I play "business phrase bingo " when my DP is working from home or I'm in meetings at work !"sunny day scenario" , " set the hares running" " over arching" .. just make a real bingo card if you're at home taking the piss... better to do it mentally in work meetings !!

snifflesnifflesnore · 13/10/2018 15:20

'I'm sorry you feel that way' said passive aggressively by people who aren't sorry at all, and are the reason for the upset.

Doonewanker · 13/10/2018 15:28

Bingo:

Take it over the line

Cross the 't's, dot the 'i's

Work hard, play hard.

Reach out

Play the game

There are hundreds more. I've been out of it for v long while on a career break having lots of children. I sometimes listen into DH's corporate phone chats and thank God I don't have to talk to him in that fashion. TBF, he doesn't say the above phrases. But he did say 'it is what it is' yesterday to me (ON SPEAKER PHONE IN FRONT OF A COLLEAGUE SO I COULDN'T BERATE HIM) on a car phone when I told him that our house's fascia board and telly aireal had blown off the roof in the crazy winds. I was so annoyed I couldn't have freely called him a twat.

Doone your dh wins the prize for the most inappropriate use of the phrase. Surely the only suitable response to bits of you house blowing away is something along the lines of "oh bugger, what are we going to do?!"

Doonewanker · 13/10/2018 15:43

Exactly. A mere 'Fuck!' would have done but no. 'It is what it is' is what I got. And that's what prompted my thread. Angry

Its my mantra when my MH is bad. It helps me let go of situations I have no control over.

Doonewanker · 13/10/2018 16:06

MrsTommyBanks - you are excused and in your circumstances, it is a perfect phrase. X
