Bleeding after menopause

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 11:08

Sorry posting here for traffic Blush

I've not had a period for 18 months and have definitely gone through the change - had lots of hot flushes/mood swings etc that now seem to be easing.

Yesterday and today noticed a tiny drop of blood on the toilet paper after a wee. Bit disconcerting really.

Have googled ( I know I know ) and have read that any blood loss not matter how small needs checking. Have rang GP and explained what's going on and got an appointment later on.

Just wondering if anyone has had this and what was the outcome. Feel a bit dramatic getting an emergency appointment to be honest.

Should have said I'm 51.

All post menopausal bleeding needs to be investigated. They will refer you to gynae on a two week wait. Don’t panic, they have to do this.

You will get a scan and may have a biopsy.

This happened to me. I had a polyp (benign). It’s a commonish thing.

Didn’t want to leave your thread unanswered.

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 11:39

Yes that's what I read when I googled.
Thanks for answering.

This happened to me too, almost the same timescale and I’m 49. Got checked out and all was well. Nurse also said that while it’s best to get checked out it’s very very common to have one or even two random light periods during the first 3 years of menopause.

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 11:56

Glad to hear all was well with you Crispbutty. I've read it can be quite common too but obviously needs checking.

As it happens, I'm going through the same thing. I'm 51 and its 2 years since my last period. Noticed a bit of blood after sex so headed off to the GP the next day. Found myself on the 2 week referral pathway and had a scan and saw the consultant within 4 days. Pretty impressive work by the NHS, but kinda scary too. I have endometrial thickening but the consultant thinks it is very likely nothing worse than polyps. I get the biopsy results, and hopefully get the polyps removed, in a couple of week. I'm just trying to focus on how reassuring the Consultant seemed to be!

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 12:43

It's good you were seen so quickly blimppy often the waiting to be seen is pretty nerve wracking. Fingers crossed all is well, be reassured by your consultant.

I've not had sex recently so it's not anything to do with that!

I had this ,but just spotting had a vaginal scan, all was well,
My daughter going through this too but bleeding more like a period, shes 54, had a scan within a week, all looked well, but got phone call to see Dr, i think possibly to change her hrt, but radiologer said everything looked oe
Dont worry too much, might just be breakthrough bleeding, and nothing to worry about, but has to be checked

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 13:27

Thanks for posting princess it's encouraging to hear that you and your daughter have had this and been ok.

I have had it too, I was seen under the two week rule and during the scans and scopes a 'suspicious' area was found in the wall of my womb so I had to have a biopsy. I was finally given the given the all clear once the results were back in, they did tell me what it was but the name escapes me. I think it is more 'normal' than we fear when it happens to us.

zukiecat · 12/10/2018 14:06

I had a tiny bit of bleeding last week, more like a show than an actual bleed, but it did have a clot of blood in it

I'm 51, and my last period was January 2017, I've had almost zero menopause symptoms, just a few hot flushes here and there.

The bleed was the same day as I went down with a nasty stomach bug, which is only just clearing now, 10 days later

Should I be concerned?

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 14:07

Glad to hear everything was ok for you haberpop! Must have been worrying initially to hear something might be wrong though.

I think like me Zukie it would be best to get checked over. I've been googling this morning as read that even one spot of blood after the menopause needs investigation, hopefully it's nothing but I think a visit to your GP is in order.

I was in the same position in the run up to Christmas last year. I didn't rush for the GP appointment but when I did it was all systems go. I was in and out of the surgery within 5 minutes - didn't even unto my coat. I had a colposcopy and she found a polyp and endometrial thickening. A week later I saw the consultant for a hysteroscopy and apparently I had multiple polyps, some of which looked deeply suspicious and he wanted me in hospital straight away. He said I would need a hysterectomy and chemo.

I had an appointment for a second hysteroscopy under GA and all the results came back negative. I had polyps but nothing sinister at all.

My point is even if you have negative news in the first few appointments it could well be nothing to worry about at all.

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 14:20

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere phew glad all was well for you in the end! Can I ask how much blood you lost? Was it a one off?

You're right Quicknamechange

I have an appt on Monday with the nurse for a B12 jab so I'll mention it to her then

Good Luck to you too, Hopefully be nothing serious

ThanksThanks

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 14:36

Hmmm, my last period was over two years ago. Recently I've had some light bleeding (usually in the days after sex) and also one more period-like bleed.

I mentioned this when at the GP about something else and she didn't bat an eyelid. Just said it was probably due to HRT. I'm using Everol Conti patches, which you change once a week (no break).

Should she have done more?

Hope you're ok OP - let us know what your dr says...

Quicknamechange2108 · 12/10/2018 14:52

I've read that hrt can cause bleeding but I'm surprised your GP didn't investigate further just to be on the safe side. For your peace of mind I would go back and mention it again.

Will let you know how I get on, just had another shower in case GP wants to have a look 😬

OP posts:
FoxFoxSierra · 12/10/2018 16:07

BlackInk I don't want to worry you but I would not be happy with that and would push for a referral. 99 times out of 100 it will be something completely harmless but someone has to be that 1 in 100 and your GP can't know for sure without further investigation. Quicknamechange good luck at your appointment

HildegardCrowe · 12/10/2018 16:18

OP, am now 61 and have had PMB a total of 5 times now since menopause (the first time I was the same age as you). Any PMB is referred on a two week wait for suspected cancer but try not to worry as chances of it being this are pretty low.

Each time I've had a transvaginal ultrasound first and if your womb lining is thin (less than 4mm), you can be reassured that it's down to atrophy and not sinister. This has been the case with me each and every time. They might want to do a hysteroscopy but probably not if it's the first time.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 12/10/2018 16:35

It was like the first day of a period and went on for five days at the risk of tmi - it was bright red to start with then watery for the last couple of days.

I've never taken HRT and it was nearly two years since my last period and a few days after the last time we had had sex so I didn't think it was related to that in any way.

sue51 · 12/10/2018 16:40

I've had this too and my experience was similar to Hildegard. My doctor arranged for me to have an ultrasound and consultation with a gynaecologist. All was well for me and I was reassured.

frogface69 · 12/10/2018 16:45

I had small bleeds after 2 years of nothing. My GP said it was "settling " shows. When hormones have a last kick.

Bluetrews25 · 12/10/2018 17:05

At any age, bleeding post-intercourse should always be checked ASAP.
I had thought that menopause is not officially 'over' until you have had 2 years without bleeds? Always good to get it checked, let's hope it's just your body's clock re-setting. (As in 'just when you thought it was all over' NOPE.)
Severely jealous of those of you who are younger than me and stopped bleeding months ago.
