How can a person running to be Mayor of London seriously do so with views like this?!

My 21 year old cousin has just got pregnant so she can get a council place and not have to work for a while. Oh and the bloke wants nothing to do with her or the baby.

It does happen

Caaarrrl · 11/10/2018 19:48

He has some seriously misogynistic views if that's how he feels. It's incredible that someone would voice the opinions that he has in that article.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2018 19:51

I won't click on it or The viens will come out my neck. It is just another case of a middle class tosser not living in the real world.
Oh and I take it there are some crass comments toward fathers who up and leave.
Are women supposed to stay in abusive relationships to please The Mayor of London.
What's his view on women who gave been widowed.
The viens are already out my neck.

Jayfee · 11/10/2018 19:52

It was a long while back, but I went to the council in Lambeth to ask to go on the housing list, having lived all my life with my parents in a council flat in Lambeth. The man asked if I was married. As I thought he meant I would have more chance if I got married, I said, No but I was going to get married. He said, Well if you don't and you get pregnant you will have a chance to get a flat, if you are married with a partner, No chance. As I was just starting my working life as a teacher I didn't take his advice. My boyfriend and I lived with my parents, saved hard and bought our own tiny house after a year of saving. So yes it did happen and apparently still does.

Jayfee · 11/10/2018 19:54

Actually, I think I should read his article first, so my apologies. I want to vote for Sadique Khan again. Hopefully he will still be allowed to stand for Labour (heard a rumour that he might be deselected...surely not??)

MandalaYogaTapestry · 11/10/2018 20:09

I believe he meant that women should not expect it to be a norm to have to raise children by themselves. That they should expect to have a partner by their side. In his speech he continued to say that women need to accept less bullshit from men because it would mean that men would need to step up.

Which is surely a good thing and a good advice. He wasn't berating single mothers, for God's sake.

Racecardriver · 11/10/2018 20:13

So you are saying that getting pregnant knowing that you have no means of supporting the child yourself, the father has no intention of supporting the child and, as a result you will become a burden on the state (therefore the tax payer) is acceptable? Either you have a very poor sense of judgement or you are reading this without context.

Racecardriver · 11/10/2018 20:15

@awwwlookatmyspider I think you should click on the article. He's not as middle class as you think.

hmmwhatatodo · 11/10/2018 20:26

Is he the one that was saying stuff about Muslims too? I read what his thoughts are on single female parents (no mention of single male parents) and still can’t warm to him.

dangermouseisace · 11/10/2018 20:33

He’s stupid too. “Many of the first single mums were housed on my estate”

Because obviously, single mums didn’t exist til the 70’s Hmm

shrumps · 11/10/2018 21:13

There are obviously individual circumstances, but I think in the main, if we are being honest, most people would say that children benefit from having two parents?

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2018 21:58

It's not women's job to improve men's behaviour. How come we're expedcted to grow up into decent human beings and then train men to be the same?

madcatladyforever · 11/10/2018 22:01

I was a professional single mum with a full time job and my own home, never claimed benefits. It was great not having to have a bloke around. I'd do it again if I wasn't too old.
Get lost Shaun, it's because of old fashioned men like you we don't want men in our lives.

AdamNichol · 12/10/2018 11:55

I haven't clicked the article, but as a general rule - powerful light powerful dark. As #metoo, gaslighting, and other forms of misogyny come under attack, so will the other side rally and fight back just as hard; claiming victimhood themselves in whatever capacity they can stretch too.
To see the future of this, look to the US, where politics is now polarised into career advancements for alleged sex-offenders, electrified fences, travel bans, and forced family segregation for not-like-me's on one side vs support for illegal immigrants and tolerance of 'cultural' behaviour that would be classed as abuse in other societies on the other

NameChanger22 · 12/10/2018 11:59

He makes me hate men a little bit more.

Bombardier25966 · 12/10/2018 11:59

@Jayfee Sadiq Khan is standing again. The only people that want him deselected are the far right that object to his faith.

PhilODox · 12/10/2018 12:03

Aye, well being a bigot shouldn't be acceptable, particularly when standing for public office! Hmm

CaligulaBlushed · 12/10/2018 12:04

In his speech he continued to say that women need to accept less bullshit from men because it would mean that men would need to step up.

I don't very well see how women can accept less bullshit from men and in some way "force" them to step up.

Either you accept no bullshit from men and you're prepared to go it alone when they turn into pathetic man-children when faced with responsibilities, or you somehow don't "let" them leave and continue to put up with their bullshit.

Totally not in the control of women to make men not only stick around to raise their children, but to make them no-bullshit partners in the process.

Conservative London mayoral candidate claimed celebrating Hindu and Muslim festivals turned Britain into 'cesspool of crime'

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/conservative-london-candidate-mayor-shaun-bailey-hindu-muslim-festival-crime-a8566341.html

He's a real nasty piece of work.

Fishandthechips · 12/10/2018 12:21

What a vile man.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 12/10/2018 12:41

I dont agree with what he said but it did used to happen.

Along with people getting their parents to write a letter saying theyd been kicked out so theyd be housed........my OHs own sister pulled that one ! At the time we thought it was fab and would descend with pot noodles and rustler burgers (( no damn money to furnish the thing properly but did have a microwave and kettle )) only as adults we can see how wrong it was.........this was back in the 90s / early 2000s tho when council houses were much more available. Good luck to anyone trying it now.

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 12:46

In his speech he continued to say that women need to accept less bullshit from men because it would mean that men would need to step up.

How is that NOT berating single mothers? Why is it the responsibility of women to change the behaviour of men?

If they’re decent men, they’ll step up. It really isn’t complicated.

partyanime · 12/10/2018 12:50

What a dickhead

Many single mothers do NOT get a flat... they get at best b&b in one room. Many single mothers have to move across the country away from support networks to where housing is available or is cheaper to rent privately. Many single mothers also find themselves living in their childhood bedroom with their parents and a baby. Some single mothers find themselves homeless and losing their children into foster care while they have no suitable living place.

Many single mothers are single mothers because some men are like this man... dickheads

Some single mothers are single mothers because social services tell them they need to leave dangerous men.

And as for girls accepting less bullshit... how about men stop giving girls such bullshit and learn that women are humans too with a right to be treated with respect. It's nearly akin to saying if women didn't let men rape them, men wouldn't rape... except we don't let them and they still do!

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 12:52

It's nearly akin to saying if women didn't let men rape them, men wouldn't rape

That is said, or at least implied, by the media in every rape case ever recorded.

She was drunk.

Her clothes were revealing.

She was walking alone.

She was too trusting.

It’s all putting the blame on the woman instead of the rapist.

partyanime · 12/10/2018 12:56

Yes exactly @YeTalkShiteHen
