Can a dentists appointment last an hour an a half?

Just that, really. Is it possible for someone to be at a dentists appointment for that long? I do have a reason for asking but I don’t want to look like an idiot if I’m wrong!

I had a two and a half hour one last week - so ime, unfortunately, yes, they can!

LIZS · 11/10/2018 17:14

Depends what they are having done. A couple of fillings or part of a longer plan possibly. Or if seeing a checkup and hygienist.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 11/10/2018 17:14

Regular check-up, or having work done?

yes sometimes DH can be there that long

Enervator · 11/10/2018 17:17

My old dentist constantly ran alarmingly late.

wonderandwander · 11/10/2018 17:18

What a daft question

SpottingTheZebras · 11/10/2018 17:18

Yes, I’ve had appointments last that long with just the dentist. Then take into account the hygienist and being kept waiting, and it’s half a day gone!

CoughArghCoughArghCough · 11/10/2018 17:19

1st of a root canal apparently if that helps!

Depending on what they are getting done, yes of course an appointment can go that long. Two fillings took me longer than that last year between waiting and then the actual procedure

StoorieHoose · 11/10/2018 17:20

45 minutes of that could be sat in the waiting room if their dentist is like mine!

Lazypoolday · 11/10/2018 17:20

Yes, root canals take a while.

SilverHairedCat · 11/10/2018 17:21

Yes absolutely. Mine have lasted that long for root canal.

Marmite27 · 11/10/2018 17:21

Yes root canals can take that long. It’s unusual, but not completely unheard of.

I used to work at a NHS dentist and while 45 minutes was normal, an hour and a half wouldn’t have been seen as out of the ordinary.

Factor in late running clinics too.

hibeat · 11/10/2018 17:21

Absolutely.

LightNC · 11/10/2018 17:22

Sounds about right for root canal

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 11/10/2018 17:25

Yeah a root canal can easily take that long. They take 45 minutes minimum for the first stage and add in time for the dentist explaining the procedure, waiting for the injection to take full effect, that's without taking into account whether the dentist is running late.

CoughArghCoughArghCough · 11/10/2018 17:25

Ahh crap Grin was hoping I could do it in a lunch hour as my boss will absolutely not let me take time off and I can’t fit it in after work. I just wondered if the receptionist was being a bit pessimistic but it seems normal. Last time I had work done it was a tooth out in less than half an hour. Ah well, I’ll get a weekend slot instead Smile

Sorry OP, root canals are long fiddly work and can take an absolute age.

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/10/2018 17:49

Yes. And longer on occasion

CormoranStrike · 11/10/2018 18:08

Doesn’t your boss legally need to give you time off for medical treatment?

hibeat · 11/10/2018 18:11

I think you could get time off from work but seriously you might not feel that cool afterwards...

Flatasapancakenow · 11/10/2018 18:14

Root canal is normally about 1 hour long over 2 or 3 sessions. Ring the dental practice, they can tell you how much time they has booked out/the dentist has requested for you.

Flatasapancakenow · 11/10/2018 18:15

Oops I mean 2 or 3 sessions each lasting about an hour.

LIZS · 11/10/2018 18:19

Or get an appointment late in the day.

E20mom · 11/10/2018 18:23

If root canal then definitely. Sounds like there's someone you don't trust.
