Canesten not worked - what next?

ShirleyPhallus · 08/10/2018 10:02

Took antibiotics last week and got thrush (predictably). I’ve now taken the chalky pessary, the oral canesten and now the gel pessary. Have had relief on and off but it’s still there.

What do I do next?

I’ve now finished the antibiotics and am eating natural yogurt to build up the healthy gut again. Will it go away on its own accord now I’m not taking them?

Or should I see a doctor for something stronger?

Take high-quality probiotics in pill form (the yoghurt may not be enough).

Put a few drops of tea-tree oil in a tepid bath. It's anti-fungal.

You could take Fluconazole 150mg capsule.

Cut all forms of sugar out of diet. I found this enormously helpful.

Wear cotton underwear and nothing tight down there. Hot-wash knickers to kill fungal spores.

If you have a sexual partner use condoms for a while and get them treated too. You could be passing it back and forth between you.

Although, as you've just been on antibiotics it's likely just a temporary imbalance caused by that.

Good luck. Recurrent thrush is miserable.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/10/2018 15:51

Thank you thank you!

The prospect of even having sex right now is not appealing so no worries there!

Try applying the yoghurt topically as well. Though let it warm up a bit first so it's not fridge cold!

Fridge cold is so soothing though!

You have my sympathies. I've got it bad too. It's bloody (literally) awful.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 08/10/2018 16:14

If you can find it, douching with water and a few drops of tincture of myrrh will fix even the worst thrush.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 08/10/2018 16:21

You're obviously made of sterner stuff than I am Enid Shock

ShirleyPhallus · 08/10/2018 16:29

Douching with myrrh????!

No no no no no!!!

I had recurrent thrush. GP was very sympathetic and prescribed something (cannot remember what - I think something similar to Canestan but some sort of extra strength variety). All sorted nicely.

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 20:36

WhatWould It feels like it's on fire atm. Some ice cold yogurt sounds nice. Grin

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 20:39

TheTurn I've been to both male and female docs and they don't ever seem bothered. Tbf I think my gp surgery is extra crap. Very glad you got sorted, it's a nasty thing.

Tried telling my gps it's more than just the slight itch like on the adverts, more like ww3, and explained the tiny cuts it gives me but nope. They're rubbish.

Any luck Shirley? Mine feels worse.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 08/10/2018 20:56

Cool is soothing, but I found straight from the fridge a little too much!

I have just remembered that I had recurrent thrush quite a while ago due to medication, and yoghurt didn't shift it that time. The thing that seemed to help was actually special "rebalancing" pessaries. They're designed for BV, but I definitely had thrush, not BV. They rebalance the pH and bacteria supposedly. I think I got them in Boots.

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 22:37

What Oh I have some of those. Think they do say there for thrush too. I definitely don't have BV. I think they say to use them after the thrush has gone but I'll try anything
atm.

Sorry for hijacking your thread OP. Good luck!

EnidButton · 08/10/2018 22:38

*they're

Rosevi · 08/10/2018 22:48

In a similar situation earlier this year. I took three Canasten gel pessaries 3 days apart and one precautionary oral tablet seven days after the last pessary. It was an expensive cure but a cure none the less.

Word of caution....I had to haggle with two different Pharmacy Assistants over how many pessaries I could buy in one go, turns out it’s one every three months! You may want to plan ahead. I had to lie in the end that I was stockpiling for ‘Brexit’ 🤦🏻‍♀️

Best of luck.

BertieBeats · 08/10/2018 22:50

When I had it a few months I got a pill from Asda pharmacy for £5 (apparently it's more expensive elsewhere ) which cleared it by the next day. Can't remember what it was called but they'll know what you mean.

Eloisedublin123 · 08/10/2018 22:50

We have run out of caneston pessaries in Ireland (not kidding) and I have resorted to cutting out sugar, and soaking a tampon in melted coconut oil with 1 drop of tea tree oil and popping it up there. And second the jogurt 🙏

polarisation · 08/10/2018 23:02

I saw a consultant about thrush, she prescribed 7 pessaries on consecutive days and then one a week thereafter, she gave me a repeat prescription. She even drew a diagram of how if you only use the single treatments it doesn't kill the new yeast spores or something.

Canesten pessaries are 500mg clotrimazole and you can get generic ones for about £3 over the counter. I got them online too as pharmacies don't always have that many in stock.

Before I saw the consultant I took fluconazole tablets a couple of times. The third time I got a rash on my face but didn't realise it was because of the tablet... The fourth time the end of my nose blistered and the skin fell off! GP said it was an allergic reaction and if I took it again I was likely to get Stevens-Johnston Syndrome - which he then happily Google image searched just to make sure I got the idea!!

oldgimmer78 · 08/10/2018 23:14

Neat Apple cider vinegar is the only thing that works for me. I could write a thesis on thrush [sadface]

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 09/10/2018 02:23

You're supposed to put the yogurt on the affected ahem, area, not eat it? Shock

Well who knew

smurfy2015 · 09/10/2018 03:19

Interested in this thread, I have had bad thrush since the 2nd week of August so literally 2 months, I am doing the cotton knickers, loose clothing,

I've seen the GP, however, I can't use the Canesten pessary as I've reacted to it in the past and everything else she tried prescribing was blocked by her computer as it contraindicates with other meds I am on.

I have been dipping tampons in cold natural yoghurt to no avail and to help with the burning sensation

I am now keeping a bottle of lube in the freezer and when I need it, I take the bottle out and run some warm tap water over it so it will move easier and then literally turkey basting into myself for relief from the burning. The baster is now sitting my drawer beside the bed so that it doesn't get put back in the kitchen and mixed up with other things.

I'm coming to the point where I am going to have to stop vital meds for several days so I can try and take the fluconazole but also it is well recognised that it may not work for me as the other meds will still be in my system and cause side effects which I always put down as just making me feel horrible as part of fluconazole but it was reacting and i didnt realise.

I think I will try neat apple cider vinegar as may as well shove anything in my raisin cave at this stage as its been uncomfortable for too long

BitOfFun · 09/10/2018 03:52

Smurfy, please don't do that! Go back to your GP.

Nacreous · 09/10/2018 04:33

I had to keep going back to docs about this.

I was told to wear skirts and no knickers at home, cotton all the rest of the time, and given a repeat prescription for fluconazole, and some canestan HC. This is better than normal canesten because it helps heal the cuts and sore patches thrush creates.

You can get fluconazole off the web, along with the creams and pessaries - if you stick up then they can be very cheap.

I was also told to stop using tampons and to try a mooncup (success not yet acheived...).

Takemetovegas · 09/10/2018 04:56

TMI but my persistent thrush turned out to be pin worms Confused. I would get a reoccurrence each month. Not sure why that was important but maybe they were attracted to the changing flora. If you think you're treating it but it's coming back and fast consider it.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 09/10/2018 09:03

Why not myrrh? It was prescribed for me by a medically qualified herbalist (NIMH qualified) and more importantly it worked when Canesten failed.

It was also prescribed for mum to ease mouth thrush during cancer treatment.

It has no contraindications with any of the cancer drugs or with flucanozole.

Great read above.

Your blood sugar may be high. Some people discover they have diabetes - chronic thrush can be a problem for diabetics. No harm in getting checked for that.

Remember, although it seems that way, the thrush is not "just" in your vagina. It's systemic actually and needs to be treated holistically in my opinion. Diet is super-helpful. See below for Candida diet. You needn't do it forever, but do make sure you aren't eat tonnes of sugar in general.

(I have no affiliation with any of these sites mentioned. I used to be a chronic thrush sufferer and it's miserable as hell and can really shake your confidence).
