Need to stop pissing away money on takeaway coffee

Help me. I fully realise I am pissing money away each day. But especially now it's colder and the guy at the station makes such wonderful coffee, I am being WEAK.

I have every single coffee maker going at home, so there's really no excuse for me not to make one at home then take it with me, but I really can't make the reusable cup a part of my life.

I must have a million reusable cups that are scattered between home and work. I find them difficult to clean and just not something I want bouncing around in my bag when I already travel pretty heavy to work. I also don't find the clunky metal conducive to a nice tasting coffee- everything tasting metallic and weird.

But I know this is wasteful and terrible for our planet- so I can't continue.

I'm wondering if there are some single use biodegradable cups that I can use to pour a cafetière into, then recycle? Or a wonderful, fantastic, easy to clean bottle/cup that I won't leave in work because it's amazing and I won't want to be parted with it?

Recommendations please! Smile

I've always used the china ones with rubber lids. Have you tried those?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/10/2018 07:21

Watching as I need the perfect coffee vessel too that’s:

-small, around 300 mls
-light
-dishwasher safe
-can be opened with one hand
-watertight when upside down
-has no handle
-no funny taste, like with rubber lids

Don’t ask for much do I? Grin

I love my contigo. Keeps it all hot for ages too.

Moocoo · 08/10/2018 07:27

Contigo

shutlingsloe · 08/10/2018 07:29

I use a joco cups one.

E20mom · 08/10/2018 07:30

I say life's short. If you really love that guy's coffee then buy it. I'm sure you deserve a daily treat.

Kerberos · 08/10/2018 07:34

Miladymilord · 08/10/2018 07:35

I agree, if you really love the coffee and it cheers you up on a Monday, buy it. Make a saving elsewhere.

I have a contigo and a thermos. Both keep my coffee hot but both taste frowsty, despite washing them up every day.

For single use biodegradable takeaway cups, lids, food containers etc. try Vegware. Can dispose of them with food waste.

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 08/10/2018 07:36

E20 that's really not the point. The OP is aware of the situation caused by using reusables every day.

No one has any excuse for doing this every day - even if they do "deserve a little treat". We should all be thinking of the bigger picture.

Miladymilord · 08/10/2018 07:37

Reusable cups make coffee taste like ass.

The upside of this is that I drink less coffee.

POPholditdown · 08/10/2018 07:38

B&M sells cardboard coffee cups, just like proper coffee shop takeaway ones.

You can reuse them once or twice if you wish, I think its about £1.50 for a pack of 5.

The coffee tastes so much better in them
for some reason. I can’t stand the thermos style mugs, or the cermamic ones with the rubber lids. Somethings just off about them.

SeaGlassHunter · 08/10/2018 07:39

I have an eco coffee cup. It is made from bamboo so is really light. It is as easy to clean as a mug, and is really pretty (mine has William Morris designs on) so I wouldn't want to lose it

legolimb · 08/10/2018 07:40

I used to take my coffee to work in a sports bottle.

Then decant into a cup and heat in the microwave.

Worked for me.

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 08/10/2018 07:40

I have a contigo and a zojirushi flask.

The zojirushi is far superior. Will keep your coffee piping hot all day. I do know what you mean about the metallic taste. I can’t taste it with coffee but I can with tea.

AlexanderHamilton · 08/10/2018 07:42

The guy at the station is trying to make a living if you like the coffee that much & can maybe cut back elsewhere don’t feel guilt.

Spam88 · 08/10/2018 07:42

I have a keep cup - it's glass with a plastic lid. Haven't noticed any weird taste/smell. Has a little lid but for the hole as well so spilling isn't a worry (although turning it upside down might be more than it could cope with!).

rookiemere · 08/10/2018 07:47

I use a ceramic Starbucks mug. No nasty taste, but not totally spill proof so best when I drive into the office. I've perfected a taste for lukewarm coffee over the years Grin

Gersemi · 08/10/2018 07:57

Can anyone recommend a good large size collapsible reusable cup?

PhilODox · 08/10/2018 07:58

A glass one would be good, because glass doesn't take on tastes and smells the way plastic and metal vessels do.

Pinkbendyman · 08/10/2018 08:08

Contigo travel mugs are amazing and keep drinks hot for hours.

RottenApple · 08/10/2018 08:19

I have an ecoffee cup. It's bamboo and light and you can chuck it in the dishwasher. The lid is silicone I believe.

AbsentmindedWoman · 08/10/2018 08:20

Watching intently, I need the perfect coffee solution too.

So tempted to get a Contigo, but not sure I'll be upset by a peculiar taste from the cup. Is a ceramic one a better bet? But do they keep stuff warm properly?

VanGoghsDog · 08/10/2018 08:26

I have one made of rice husk with a silicone lid, no odd taste but not the watertight keep warm type, just the reusable cup type.

Bodum do a good glass one with a cafetiere inner, if you like that sort of coffee (I drink tea and use it for leaf tea).

I get what you mean though, nothing is ideal. And if you don't drink the full cup you're walking around with half a cup of cold tea to throw away, and if you want to use it twice in a day you need to work out his to wash it. As I have green tea a wipe with a napkin will do but if I had coffee or hot choc etc I can see that would be a pain.
