Need to stop pissing away money on takeaway coffee

Help me. I fully realise I am pissing money away each day. But especially now it's colder and the guy at the station makes such wonderful coffee, I am being WEAK.

I have every single coffee maker going at home, so there's really no excuse for me not to make one at home then take it with me, but I really can't make the reusable cup a part of my life.

I must have a million reusable cups that are scattered between home and work. I find them difficult to clean and just not something I want bouncing around in my bag when I already travel pretty heavy to work. I also don't find the clunky metal conducive to a nice tasting coffee- everything tasting metallic and weird.

But I know this is wasteful and terrible for our planet- so I can't continue.

I'm wondering if there are some single use biodegradable cups that I can use to pour a cafetière into, then recycle? Or a wonderful, fantastic, easy to clean bottle/cup that I won't leave in work because it's amazing and I won't want to be parted with it?

Recommendations please! Smile

The contigo is the best one I've tried (and I've tried a lot!). Keeps it hot for longer than most - but not all day, you need a proper flask for that! If it's just for a commute though, definitely a contigo. I prefer drinking from it, like the locking mechanism and it's definitely leak/spill proof. Also love their water bottles.

I have one of the Stojo pop-up ones and haven't noticed any taste... It's a plastic rather than silicon lid. I like the Keep Cups but find them too bulky - I can get this one into a small shoulder bag so it's perfect if you don't want to lug loads about.

I used disposable cups for years to save money on the morning coffee habit. Like you, I couldn't get on with the dirty reusable cup clunking about in my bag on the way to work (after drinking coffee on the train).

Try to get compostable disposable cups. Even if they end up in the general waste during the commute they will at leave compost in the land full!

Bring one of your coffee machines to work and have a nice coffee when you arrive in a proper cup. Treat yourself on a Friday to the takeaway and it will taste all the more delicious.

I love my contigos. I have a few sizes and use them for iced coffee and black hot coffee. They are not flasks and are not designed to keep coffee hot for 12 hours. However, they do keep it hot for a commute. They are spill proof and do not leave any weird taste. I have some of the others mentioned on here and dont use them. Glass is all very well (and I have those) but heavy. I do not want to be carrying round glass all day. The contigos dont weight much when empty.

Agreed - we should all just have a brew at home and another at work instead of swanning around like Sarah Jessica Parker!

I have a bodum (metal) and a keep cup and I don't notice any difference in taste. However neither of them would pass the "not leaking test" and need to be kept upright

UpstartCrow · 08/10/2018 13:24

I just use a thermos.

dobbythedoggy · 08/10/2018 13:34

I have a wide neck insulated kleen kanteen. Never had a funny taste and keeps things warm for hours and and hours. It keeps ice lollies frozen for a good 4 hours for days out with the children. The cafe cap is good, I find it easy to clean and put back together after a few practices. I personally wouldn't chuck it in my bag, it takes a lot of knocking around but the lid can shift enough to leak and the instructions say not to. I use the loop cap if I need to do that.

Alienspaceship · 08/10/2018 13:50

The reusable cups are designed to keep your coffee warm while you drink it - they’re not designed to keep it warm for hours I.e they are not an alternative to a thermos flask Hmm

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/10/2018 14:05

None of steel ones seem to be dishwasher proof.

TheChocolateTrain · 08/10/2018 14:11

I use a contigo one because I don't need it to keep warm for ages. I've seen some glass(?) ones from camelbak but never tried one out.

I know alien - I was baffled by those comments too!

I have a Nespresso touch mug - double walled stainless steel with a proper top that doesn't leak even when upside down in my bag on the school run. It keeps coffee proper hot even on Southern trains at there worst so good couple of hours.

might even have used it to keep wine and gin cool at a theme park over the summer and that worked til lunchtime with ice cubes in

@JeremyCorbynsBeard It's only 'not the point' if, like you, you choose to ignore half of what @sailorvenus says in their original post.

I have a 12 oz Sol Cup and a Contigo Autoseal West Loop flask. Both are perfect for me. I commute into London and I don’t have any problems with either in my handbag/rucksack.

The Sol Cup is fantastic, they are definitely the best reusable cups on the market.

My tastebuds took a little bit of time to adjust to a reusable cup and the Contigo but now it feels pretty weird drinking out of a disposable cup. You just have to persist and think of the baby dolphins!

dreamyflower · 09/10/2018 15:29

I know it sounds silly but waitrose do reusable takeaway cups for £3 and honestly best one I've used. It's light and cleans easy. I get my coffee shop coffee in it. I'm supposed to be.making it at home but doesnt taste the same!
