Have the words changed or have I been singing it wrong all my life?

I’ve always sang ‘haven’t had an egg since Easter’

But Mr Tumble sings ‘since breakfast’

What version do you know?

Perhaps it's because Easter is a Christian thing and not as inclusive as breakfast?

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/10/2018 09:36

Breakfast.

Learnt it at music group when offspring were wee. They are late teens now so breakfast isn't new.

Eminybob · 07/10/2018 09:37

It’s always been breakfast, I’ve never heard Easter.

Marmite27 · 07/10/2018 09:39

Always sang Easter, and was confused by breakfast Confused.

Surely if you’d had an egg earlier in the day you shouldn’t be pestering the chicken for another one!

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 07/10/2018 09:39

I’ve always heard breakfast and never heard of the Easter version.

LatteLover12 · 07/10/2018 09:43

We sing Easter in our house 🐣

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 07/10/2018 09:45

I thought it was - lay a little egg for me?🙈

Coldhandscoldheart · 07/10/2018 09:45

I sing since Friday. As the next line is ‘and now it’s half past three’ Mr Tumble’s version probably makes the most sense.

MaryBoBary · 07/10/2018 09:46

I only ever have these lyrics in my head due to a tv advert a few years ago:

Chick chick chick chick chicken
Lay a little egg for me
Chick chick chick chick chicken
Fill it with Omega 3!!!!

I don’t even know the original!

Surpriseitsme · 07/10/2018 09:47

We've always said since tuesday, no idea why

Eminybob · 07/10/2018 09:47

Exactly, the half past 3 line only makes sense if it’s breakfast.

imnottoofussed · 07/10/2018 09:54

I know it as Easter but I did go to a church school so maybe that's why

nuttyknitter · 07/10/2018 09:56

I'm in my sixties and we always sang breakfast. Could it be a regional thing? Southerner here.

MawkishTwaddle · 07/10/2018 09:59

Easter

HalfBloodPrincess · 07/10/2018 09:59

My school wasn’t a religious school and we always sang Easter.

Funny how it differs. Google brings up both versions plus the Tuesday version too.

For me it was ‘since breakfast ‘

SimplyPut · 07/10/2018 10:01

Easter here too... Scotland.

HalfBloodPrincess · 07/10/2018 10:01

@nuttyKnitter I’m from London.

Because it's a Second World War song. People were encouraged to keep chickens to provide their own eggs to supplement their rations.

The song makes fun of the situation by creating a character who's desperate for an egg, and a chicken who won't stump up the goods.

It's always made me smile, particularly the bit that goes:

Get into your nest
Do your little best
Get it off your chest
I can do the rest

I find it really sweet and funny Smile

NerrSnerr · 07/10/2018 10:04

It was always easter for me and I'm originally from East Yorkshire. My daughter's favourite toy is called Chick Chick Chicken and she now sings Easter.

MawkishTwaddle · 07/10/2018 10:06

Oh, I just researched it and I've been talking bollocks!

It's a Charleston from the 1920s!

Maybe they appropriated it during the war?

elQuintoConyo · 07/10/2018 10:09

The little girl who sang it in the 80s is her put of 2 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps!

I'm 43yo raised in Scotland (but i'm English - and complicated!) and always sang tea/ Easter.

Now i've got an earworm Angry

MawkishTwaddle · 07/10/2018 10:10

Different song.

I was on about Hey Little Hen.

Fuckin' chickens Blush

To think 12 years later the debate is still going!

HalfBloodPrincess · 07/10/2018 10:12

Oops, sorry for the ear worm Blush

mawkishtwaddle I prefer your version of the history!

Looks like the original version was Easter but is sometimes replaced with breakfast
