Anybody else living with an elderly adorable pita cat?

My boy, 'P' we'll call him, is about 12 now & omg is he a pain in the arse but so lovable with it. He's started shouting his head off now, he never used to. He comes in the cat flap 'MEOW, MEOW, MEOW, MEOW, MEOW'. He doesn't stop until you sit down so he can have your warm lap. He shouts his head off at bedtime if I'm not upstairs by about 8pm Hmm When I do go up and read MN in bed he plants his large self in the micro-gap between my tum & the laptop. He's become a demon mouser out of nowhere - dead entrails frequently found in the kitchen & he enjoys the odd puke here & there for almost non-existent hairballs. Oh and I forgot to mention he wakes me up shouting in the middle of the night and sleeps on my head if he can get away with it He also gives me a stern talking-to if I have a bath because he's convinced I'm a nutter and I'll drown.. He's had a full mot at the vets & they say he's all fine, these are just the quirks of his old age. Anyone else got a dearly beloved cat that drives them batty?

I have a 20 year old who just wants belly rubs every waking hour, and needs kisses to walk further than 2 steps in front of you (stops, cranes neck expectantly). Also screams every time the fridge opens to remind you he's willing to be fed!

goforkyourself · 06/10/2018 20:48

Grumpy tabby cat (13) is the most beautifulist cat in the whole world but she is so evil. She hates everyone apart from me Shock She especially despises my mother and hisses and spits at her (kinda with her on that one) but also attacks anyone who comes to feed her when I go away. I love her so much though Grin

We lost our 18 year old cat last year, still miss him dearly! He was a complete PITA but I'd give anything to have him back. The constant meowing, knocking things over, figuring out how to fish leftovers out of the bin, hallway dashes at 3am...I never expected to miss it all but I do. We have 2 other cats but they're much better behaved and it's just not the same!

I have 2 old ladies. One reserved her pita-ness for dd1, the other is a pita to everyone. Try’s to steal your food, gets on your lap and waved her ass in your face if you’re trying to do anything, comes at shouts at us at 5am because she wants feeding, we love her to bits.

Idontmeanto · 06/10/2018 21:22

These are they, taken a few years ago now!

I lost my beautiful girl a few years ago. She was a monster and I adored her. She thought my twins were her own property and napped under their basket so she could hiss at all of our visitors when they were babies. She would meow plaintively for food, then turn her nose up at it if it wasn’t quite to her liking (only the posh felix pouches, in gravy not jelly, no fish flavours). If you annoyed her she would fix you with her steely stare and wee on the floor. She refused to even try to scare away the enormous spiders in our house.

She had the softest, warmest fur. When I had a miscarriage she came and slept in my bed with me (had never done it before or since).

Hidingtonothing · 06/10/2018 21:40

I have a 15 year old ‘P’ and yes, he is an adorable pita Smile Constantly screeching at me for not meeting his demands quickly enough and attempting to help me break my neck by weaving round my legs when I walk anywhere.

I have been here before though and am choosing to bask in his undivided attention and think myself lucky he wants to be close to me when he trips me for the tenth time today, because I know there will come a time when I would give anything for him to trip me one more time. The quirks of feline old age are designed to remind us just how stupendously important they are, I hope you’re toeing the line OP Grin

We have an adorable pita 15 year old boy. He meows to go out the back door, then comes straight in the bedroom windowConfused He uses the bedroom window like a cat flap all night.
He won't walk on the rug but walks all around the edge, except if there is a sheet of paper on said rug which he will happily sit on. 🤷‍♀️
As soon as I sit down he's on my lap, he can hear the fridge open from the end of the garden.
Love him to bits😻

MadMaryBoddington · 06/10/2018 22:06

Oh dear lord yes; you have just described my old girl to a T. The loud yowling until I shout “I’m here!”, the sudden discovery of mousing after catching nothing more challenging than autumn leaves for her first decade, the sense of importance, and did I mention the YOWLING.

She is currently in the airing cupboard, drying her fur on my clean sheets, but will soon be transferring herself to the bed, yowling all the way.

selfishcrab · 06/10/2018 22:23

Me too, she 20 next month and so sweet and loving and noisy! She was a rescue 17 years ago.
She now wont move from the kitchen unless one of her slaves picks her up and calls (demands) us from there, we then play guess what I want, which we never get right! Today she fancies cheese, yesterday it was ham, last week she had a thing for cheese and onion crisps... I feed her what ever she wants now because at nearly 20 she deserves it.
She has to be taken to bed (my bed) at 9pm on the dot or she wont shut up.
Her litter brother died last year at 18 and we were devastated, she on the other hand appears to have not even noticed Hmm

bushtailadventures · 06/10/2018 22:39

This is our 15yr old pita, she's lovely, but she's got so demanding in the last year or so. She mostly lives on the kitchen table, where we all congregate and will claw your hand to get you to fuss her. You have to barricade your food too, or she will try and eat it from your plate (caught her trying to eat chocolate cake earlier). Dgd will give the cat her cereal bowl, before finishing, because 'Lucky loves me'

We have Sir 'P' who will be celebrating 21 years young soon. We got him from the rescue centre when he was 12.
He's a bit senile, but completely immortal.
His PITA list...
4am screaming in my ear for food, 6am screaming for food (after being fed at 4am), dribbling when happy, dribbling when purring, farting and looking innocent, drinking out of one specific bowl in the bathroom, refusing to eat cheap ham, refusing to eat the same brand of food for more than a week, scratching the bathroom door as he always needs to go when someone else is in there, sleeping on my pillow by my neck, biffing the other cats if they dare sit on me...
He doesn't go out much now as he gets a bit lost so he has a massive cat run in the garden to keep him from wandering, spoilt boy!
He's a bit arthritic, a bit senile, but lives a great life and is very loved...except at 4am.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 06/10/2018 22:49

My old boy has recently decided that he likes fleece blankets, after turning his nose up at them for years. I've used a cotton bedspread because he wouldn't come up on the bed if I had a fleece blanket. He can't jump that high any more, so it's academic now. He walks about the house miaowing confusedly, and if I sit down he grabs my hand and makes me stroke him. He can still get on the sofa and I'll put a step there for him when he can't manage. DH has built an extra step by the back door to help him reach the cat flap. He hardly ever bites these days. Still desperate for our food, but even less likely to get any now he's on special pukey-cat food from the vet. He's about 16, and making the most of old age

wejammin · 06/10/2018 22:50

We have an old lady who is at least 12 but could be more, she was a rescue and we've had her 10 years. She's developed noise induced seizures, has slight dementia and is partially blind.
She's the soppiest, dribbliest, snuggliest cat I've ever met. If she wants a scritch she will pat my face until she gets one. She will jump on any available knee and roll onto her tummy even if that means rolling off onto the floor from a height. She's developed an obsession with moving her 4 stuffed mice around the house and if you don't acknowledge her "kill" she will yowl at your feet/end of bed without giving up. I luffs her.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/10/2018 22:52

My old boy looks very much like Bears.
He is around twenty (rescue cat so not sure), as skinny as hell, but still going.
He is very fussy about his food, likes to stay in winter-time, and only likes to have a fuss when he wants one (and then continuously until he has had enough.
I have to comb his fur and clip his claws as he is so ancient.
He was my only companion for a few years, and I was devastated recently when I thought he had died (laying on his side and breathing so slowly I couldn't see it for a while). I will truly miss him when he's gone! Smile

LonelyOversharer · 06/10/2018 23:18

My old boy is nearly 18 (I think), I've had him 16yrs anyway. He tries to kill us on the stairs daily. He is always under any passing foot. And on the wrong side of any door. And the yowling!

Three years ago he went missing for 3 weeks. He turned up in a very bad way (just as we'd come to terms with him never coming back), dishevilled, thin, covered in wounds...off to the vets, I was like a wailing snotty thing, so sure he would have to be pts there and then. A flea allergy. Ffs. Turns out a local old lady had taken him in, and 'kept' him. Her house fleas disagreed with him. One squeeze of frontline and he was as good as new. He's never left home again!

But I treated him to some gourmet cat food when he was poorly...now he only eats gourmet double delicacies, or sheba fuss pot in trays. He costs more to feed than my visla.

Still catching rabbits and voles never mind the live stoat he left muggins here to deal with and in fine fettle. I'm not sure what I'll do when he goes.

kittenfun · 06/10/2018 23:23

Tr1skel1on · 06/10/2018 23:29

Oh yes. My nearly 20 PITA black cat is a champion Yowler. He is the very definition of cantankerous!

However we all love him dearly and would be lost without him. He terrorises our collie & other cats and is totally banned from upstairs due to his habit of piddling on carpets.

I wish he could remember being fed though, would save my ears from the yowls.

kittenfun · 06/10/2018 23:30

Ours is deaf can't see very loud meows very loud as he can't hear meows for food all day
Only eats wet

HelenaDove · 07/10/2018 01:43

My 15 and a half year old furry baby passed away two years ago this month (on the 23rd) and i miss her so much.

she would pick fights with bigger cats..........and win.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 07/10/2018 08:43

I have a 15 year old Queen Kitty.
She has suddenly decided she likes our eldest child, having previously despised him for no obvious reason. She comes up to him when he's sat down and pats at him.
She spends most of her time sleeping on a dining chair in a quiet corner.

Foslady · 07/10/2018 09:42

Foscat is 15 and for the past year has had me up at least once in the night, goes to the door, I open it for her to decide no, she’s hungry....! . New man came into my life who said he was a dog person, only now they have their own mutual fan club and I’m demoted to absolute slave rather than preferred slave by her.
And yes, we too have the ‘this is my favourite food ever’ and then 30 seconds later ‘OMG you’re trying to poison me’......but we’ve been through so much together (got her as a three year old rescue) I’m dreading the day anything happens to her

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 07/10/2018 10:14

CrookedCat is around 14 and a total PITA.
He tried to pull his own leg off some years ago, necessitating lengthy and expensive surgery to stick it back on. Now he's very stiff on it (no surprises really) and is due at the vets next week for a review before we move to "the next level" of expense pain relief.
To this end he requires the back door to be opened for him, ditto the back gate. His vocal range makes this unavoidable.
He requires only fish flavoured meat and biscuits. Biscuits have to be Canagan, the last bag cost nearly £40 and resulted in DH having an attack of the vapours in the feed merchants (I normally pick them up when he's not with me Wink)
He sleeps on our bed- we are firmly in the "no animals upstairs" camp Grin
He bullies the dogs to get the best spot by the fire.
He can no longer be left alone for a night if we go away due to his cocktail of pills so needs to go to the cattery. Not just any cattery mind, anywhere other then his chosen favourite and he pulls all his fur out in protest.
Having said all that, we are besotted with him Grin
