I’ve been sorting out my mum’s cupboards and came across the woman’s weekly birthday cake special. I’m going to take my inspiration from it for all family birthdays in the future.

Who knew you could make such masterpieces out of buttercream!

Did anyone have "Look, I Can Cook"? A children's cookery book with step by step guides as well as"Now call mother" when in involved heat! I still make the cheese straws

MawkishTwaddle · 06/10/2018 20:20

I had that Sally cookbook! I got it from a jumble sale in the early 80s - I never thought I'd see it again!

It had recipes for melting moments and peppermint creams!

I love this thread!

Yes, I had the look, I can cook book. DM lost it when I made drop scones for the millionth time.

I remember those orange halves with orange jelly in but I feel that they were actually in quarter and made into ships with a cocktail stick flag? My mum had a book of kids party food that had things like that in it.

My kids and I love a browse through the women’s weekly cake book. I’m a shocking baker but we have had loads of fun making them!

And I remember butterfly buns!

WindyWednesday · 06/10/2018 20:29

Those are in the Sainsburys party food book. I begged DM for those.

WindyWednesday · 06/10/2018 20:33

This one.

measles mousse GrinGrinGrin

I learned to cook in France and Italy. English food, and particularly gravy, was 'foreign' to me, so I found an old dogeared, gravy(!)stained copy of Marguerite Patten's Everyday Cook Book and used the recipes in there to make mincemeat for mince pies and Real English Christmas Pudding. We lived in Italy at the time and I made loads of money selling my mince pies to the expats. Remember buying two pair of knee high boots with the proceeds.Soft Italian leather. Thank you Marguerite PattenGrin
Oh, and her recipe for gravy was OK, tooSmile

Donkey my MIL makes something called “Chocca mocha trifle” which is chocolate Swiss roll, chocolate angel delights with a little coffee in it and whipped cream on top with chopped nuts or grated chocolate. Could it be something similar?

TheProvincialLady · 06/10/2018 20:36

The recipe was from a 1970s magazine, cut out and still living in her kitchen drawer!

Galvantula · 06/10/2018 20:36

Clearly I have the modern 90s Dairy book. 😄

@pickachew was it this m&s microwave book?

I've got a nice wee vintage collection of ones my mum wasn't using at the moment.

I'm sure I've a couple of the St Michael ones too...

Haha I didn't realise the freezer one was Mary Berry!

Galvantula · 06/10/2018 20:39

Also a big be-ro book fan. The shortbread Highlanders are great and I also use it for stuff like drop scones and the choc chip cookies.

Sauce section also handy!

Do you have any of the Baking ones from the late 70’s early 80’s please?

Galvantula · 06/10/2018 20:41

I don't but my mum might..I can have a rummage next time I'm round. Will report back...

PickAChew · 06/10/2018 20:42

No, it has a different cover. I can't get to it, at the moment, as most of our books are still packed away but there's a lot of brown on the cover

FullFatCoke · 06/10/2018 20:42

namechange4000 I have the dairy book too! It was in my ex's flat when we got together, he didn't know where it came from so I stole it when we spilt up. Make all my pastry and pies from it.

Furrycushion · 06/10/2018 20:43

I have some of the M&S ones, as well as my Look, I can cook

AviatorShades · 06/10/2018 20:45

My mum and dad had that Mary Berry book!. Must have bought it when huge freezers (usually situated in the garage) were the 'in' thing to buy.
Don't know what they actually cooked, tho. Suspect they'll have stocked it with produce from Bejam(the name came back to me while I was typing!) Whatever happened to Bejam?

BestIsWest · 06/10/2018 20:45

We have both versions of the HamlynAll Colour Cookbook - The red one and the black one. In fact DH bought a new red one the other day because ourse had fallen apart. We only ever cook cakes from it.

BertieBotts · 06/10/2018 20:45

I am 90% sure my MIL has these weight watchers recipe cards. I was so excited when I saw them, having recognised them from the blog, but I have never worked up the courage to flick through them in case she catches me.

I think I saw the link earlier in the thread but the commentary is so hilarious it is worth a repost. www.candyboots.com/wwcards.html

PersisFord · 06/10/2018 20:49

YES Windy that book!!

I’m going to try and get it now.

PhilomenaButterfly · 06/10/2018 20:51

I want to know what emergency bread is! "I've broken my leg!" "Right, I'll just whip up a farmhouse loaf, you'll be right as rain!" 😂

PersisFord · 06/10/2018 20:57

In my search for the party food book I just put “Carole Handslip” into amazon and watched in amazement as nearly the entire contents of my mum’s extensive recipe book collection appeared. Hundreds of them. Basically nearly everything I ate as a kid was invented by Carole handslip!

Nakedavenger74 · 06/10/2018 20:59

@Fredathetortoise this was the edition of the Be-Ro book we had in the 70's. 'Miss Be-Ro' indeed.
