Anyone want a little giggle-I’ve found a cake book from the 1970’s

I’ve been sorting out my mum’s cupboards and came across the woman’s weekly birthday cake special. I’m going to take my inspiration from it for all family birthdays in the future.

Who knew you could make such masterpieces out of buttercream!

TBH maybe it's just me who doesn't put the rice round the edge Blush I chuck it at the side of the curry. Maybe I need to improve my presentation skills!!

There are some true treasures here. Whole salads set in arsepick jelly. Salad pies.

There's a few sweets I've not seen in the UK that were staples growing up in Australia. Musk sticks (bright pink) being one, licorice laces another.
I've no idea why "musk", but lifesavers (approx Australian equivalent of Polos, but lots of flavours) were also available in "musk flavour".

Can anyone tell me what editions my 3 Be-Ro books are please? I've had them a few years but can't remember where I actually got them from!

www.amazon.co.uk/Farmhouse-fare-Country-recipes-collected/dp/B0000CJ022/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1538914686&sr=1-4&refinements=p_27%3AFarmers+Weekly
I have this, although I think it's an earlier edition, it's fascinating- the recipes seem to be printed as sent in by readers and not standardised, so they say things like 'take a good amount of butter"
loads of recipes for preserves, and if you want to know what to do with a pigs head, this is the book for you

bluetongue · 07/10/2018 13:23

This thread has taken me back to my childhood Smile. My mum still has the birthday cake cookbook and numerous other women’s weekly cookbooks.

I’ll have to look for musk sticks idea if you can still get them.

BayTrees · 07/10/2018 13:39

I cant believe no one has yet mentioned The Blue Peter Book of Gorgeous Grub! My mum refuses to part with it so I had to track it on Amazon marketplace. Star wars stew and eggs Essen work really well with veggie sausages.

I have been googling off and on for years for a recipe for chocolate fudge cake icing which was butter, cocoa powder and evaporated milk plus sugar which you cooked on the hob for a bit.
We called it chocolate fudge sludge cake and cooked it as a tray bake, but I am not sure if was meant to be a traybake or a proper round cake. It was the best chocolate cake ever. It was in a 70’s recipe book - maybe good housekeeping, or Hamlyn all colour.
All the modern recipes seem to use real chocolate not cocoa powder so I’m struggling.

I loved reading recipe books as a child! This is a great thread.

The edition number for the be-ro books is on the first page, or at least it is in mine. Mine is edition 34 and says to write to Joyce Bostock if I have any questions! Presumably Joyce retired some years ago

Joyce was still mentioned in the 37th edition, having checked mine!

Perhaps a Cathy and Claire nom-de-plume though?

Furrycushion · 07/10/2018 14:16

Oxfam are selling my one for £25! Surely no-one would pay that?? It's a flimsy little leaflet, really.

elephantoverthehill · 07/10/2018 14:17

As I understand it, the reason for all the coconut, sultanas and banana etc served with or in curry in the seventies was because they were based on Caribbean curries rather than Indian.

This is a great thread! Thanks for starting this nostalgia trip. My late DM was a great cook and baker.

I have the Hamlin Cook Book and a few other gems too.

I don't have them but does anyone recognise the David Nixon Magic Cookery Cards? I used to love looking at them when I was small. DM also had a fondness for Jimmy Young Grin

@adagio if you're skilled enough with conversions, you might be able to adapt this one, for the icing, at least

@PrivateParkin the rice moat is very retro.

pmac62 · 07/10/2018 15:38

I inherited from my Mom a Mrs Beetons cookbook from the 20's. It also does toast water, talks about invalid cook (with plenty of eggs!),
Also my daughter has The Glasgow Cookery Book which has something called Sea Pie.Which has meat in it and no fish!

RustyBear · 07/10/2018 15:48

@BertieBotts - be funny if you were there! DS is Matthew and we live in Wokingham...

McFugget · 07/10/2018 16:09

Cheddar curry! Shock A crime against cheese, surely! (I LOVE cheese)

Off to have a look at your link Urban. I'm morbidly fascinated with savoury food entombed in aspic.

GloriaSmud · 07/10/2018 17:02

My rather battered copy of Mrs Beeton's Cookery Book that belonged to my Grandma, published in 1912. The adverts are something else ~ Cane Sugar for treating Heart Disease Shock

It has a chapter called 'The Housewife' which includes a section on 'How to manage Servants.'

That's fab Gloria

pmac62 · 07/10/2018 17:13

Gloria
That is the same edition as my Mom had. As my Mom was not born until 1917, it was probably her Moms.
The ads are really funny.

cannotmakemymindup · 07/10/2018 18:50

Oh rice moats on currys!! Forgotten that's how my mum always served them.
And consequently gets annoyed at me that I don't serve it like that!! So so funny.
Thinking about taking photos next time I visit of her cookery books.

GooseDownCreek · 07/10/2018 18:56

So I've just learned I serve curry wrong.
DH always asks for sultanas in his curry.
We are old though.
