Knitting a hat on a wet Saturday.

I have a few days off work. Today it is raining and looks cold outside. Can I justify spending the day on the sofa, listening to the radio and knitting a hat? Or should I be more active as it is one of the few Saturdays I get off work each year. Another factor is that payday is not until next Friday so I can't really afford to go shopping. Shall I just snuggle down with the knitting and some coffee?? :)

That's a lovely personal knitting history. Quite impressive you tackled a jumper so early on.

I'm picking it up again after a long break and it's quite fun for the time being. Especially with the weather getting colder.

I discovered today my sewing machine has gone wonky so that's another reason to knit! Tomorrow was going to be quilting day.

Please may I have the hat pattern too? I am currently knitting a scarf for DD, and I have promised her a hat after, but I've never done one before!

MrsMozart · 06/10/2018 21:33

That sounds like a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

LibraryLurker · 06/10/2018 21:34

KnockMeDown I have pm'd you.

I'm knitting a hat as well! I've just done one for a friend with a goat on it, her son wants a green one with a sheep on it but I'm waiting for her to drop off the green wool needed. In the meantime I'm doing a plain cream one with double pom poms on for someone at work. Just the thing whilst watching Strictly.

KnockMeDown · 06/10/2018 21:57

Thank you LibraryLurker lets see how I get on!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 06/10/2018 22:17

Mine won't have a goat or a sheep on it 😊 Fair play No

Just in case you fancy some lovely knitting chat with lovely people, I suggest you have a look at the Woolly Hugs topic.

Fuzzy would you like a picture?

Just a thought, if someone wants to do a bit of knitting but doesn't want to commit to knitting big things, hospitals often like hats and tiny jackets for the premature baby unit. For the less experienced knitter, some hospitals like knitted squares so they can give one to the parents to get their smell and they put that in with the very tiny babies to create a bond. Can't remember which hospital was after them tho, but it'll come up on Google I expect.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/10/2018 10:25

Yes, No, I would love one. I enjoy seeing other people's knitting.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 07/10/2018 10:45

There you go. It's quite long as she wanted something to fit over her ears to keep them warm, she has a big head ( that's what she said, not me!) so an extra long amount of ribbing. She can never find hats long enough for her.

Oh wow, No, just wow. It's beautiful. The colours are really striking and the detail on the goat is amazing. It's a prancing goat! Well done. The recipient should be delighted with it.

Knitting is one of my favourite pastimes, especially on a wet or cold day. I now have a rocking chair by the window, so I can sit by the radiator & make the most of the light to knit. I'm aware I sound old... I'm late 30s! Grin Knitting reminds me of my grandmothers. Both of them knitted, but both died before I learned. I'd like to have learned from them - they were both good, but one in particular was amazing & could do Fair Isle really neatly, with the reverse side nearly as nice as the front.

I have two favourite hat patterns - one is a simple cloche design, that you knit deliberately large in non-washable wool, then machine wash to felt & shrink it. The other is one I adapted from a baby hat pattern, I can make a child or adult version, & figured out ear flaps/ ties for the baby version.

Thank you Fuzzy. I've made some with dinosaurs on as well, they were well recieved! I'll let you know how the sheep one goes.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 07/10/2018 11:22

It doesn't show in the picture but the black wool has sparkly bits in it, really effective.

PlaymobilPirate · 07/10/2018 11:27

Crafting is good for the soul. I taught myself to crochet 3 years ago and I'm definitely calmer and happier as a result.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/10/2018 11:35

I saw the sparkly wool, No. I'm in awe. I'm going to try LibraryLurker's hat pattern soon. I have had varying degrees of success with knitting hats to date. The last ones were to small for my big, fuzzy head. Awdbovril that sounds divine. I like to take the armchair closest to the open fire and knit there in the winter. One of my grandmothers was a lovely knitter. I'm only able to do very basic patterns but I enjoy it. I agree, Playmobil, crafting is very soothing. It makes you slow down, focus on the task at hand and to put away the phone for a while 😁

MsHomeSlice · 07/10/2018 16:13

i just redid the ribbing on a hat I finished yesterday, it's entrelac and very pretty, but there was just too many stitches in the band.

I used this technique It looks a bit tight now, ffs! But dd's head is smaller than mine so it'll be alright I reckon!

Haven't got a pic of the hat, but if it uploads this is the matching scarf!

Ooh, that is very pretty indeed, MsHomeSlice. Lovely colours in the wool, beautiful knitting. Does the stitch have a name?

MsHomeSlice · 07/10/2018 17:48

Thanks ....it's this pattern from ravelry Lacy zigzag shawl

it's very easy to do without having to pay too much attention once you have done a few rows.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/10/2018 18:18

Thank you for the pattern. I would love to give it a try. This would make a lovely gift for a friend of mine.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 07/10/2018 22:20

Ravelry has some great patterns that u can download, if you tick the boxes on the left hand side of the website it'll show you the free ones.

AwdBovril · 08/10/2018 01:44

Inspired by this thread, I'm going to try to learn how to do Fair Isle knitting. YouTube will assist me!
